To perform a system recovery, the otebook should ot be docked (port replicator). For more iformatio about usig your CD-ROM drive, read the correspodig chapter i this user guide or the maual supplied with your peripheral. Usig the Product Recovery CD-ROMs The followig sectios describe how to use the Recovery CD-ROMs. You will fid a set of two Recovery CD-ROMs i your Product Recovery Pack: The System Recovery CD-ROM (vol. 1 of 2) allows you to perform a full system recovery; The Applicatio Recovery CD-ROM (vol. 2 of 2) helps you to recover your preistalled software ad to reistall the device drivers maually. The system recovery process allows you to reistall a image of the hard disk as it was whe you started usig your otebook computer. Use the System Recovery CD i the followig cases: I the evet of a serious system crash, If you wat to modify the size of your partitios. The Applicatio Recovery CD allows you to: Reistall a idividual driver if a device is ot fuctioig properly, Reistall a idividual applicatio i the case you have problems ruig it.

20 Usig the Product Recovery CD-ROMs 20 About the Software o your otebook Computer Performig a system recovery Use this optio oly whe your system is seriously damaged, e.g. if Widows does ot work ay more, or your PC behaves abormally, etc. The system recovery will completely reistall the origially cofigured system o your C: drive. Your D: drive data will ot be deleted if you choose to keep the same partitio settigs. If you decide to modify the size of your partitios, the existig data o both drives (C: ad D:) will be deleted.! Applyig a system recovery meas that you will lose all your data stored o your C: drive (ad your D: drive if you modify partitio settigs). Therefore, before applyig a system recovery, copy your data to a exteral disk.! CAUTIO: make sure that your computer is coected to AC (ot the battery) before you attempt a system recovery.! CAUTIO: whe the recovery is performed, you must remove the recovery CD-ROM from the drive before restartig the computer. If the CD-ROM is still i the drive, you will restart a recovery process. The recovery process takes betwee 10 to 20 miutes to complete. You must ru the Applicatio Recovery CD (vol. 2 of 2) from Widows. The applicatio will ot ru from DOS. Whe performig a applicatio recovery, you do ot lose data o your hard disk.

21 Usig the Product Recovery CD-ROMs 21 About the Software o your otebook Computer Procedure for startig a system recovery 1 Take the System Recovery CD-ROM (vol. 1 of 2). 2 Tur o your computer (usig AC power oly) ad isert the System Recovery CD-ROM i the CD-ROM drive. 3 Shut dow your computer (Start/Shut Dow/Shut Dow). 4 Wait te secods ad tur your computer back o. 5 O the first scree that appears, click OK. 6 The System Recovery CD scree appears, askig you what to do with the partitios o your hard disk. At this stage you have 3 optios available. Recoverig the system without chagig partitios Recoverig the system with modified partitio sizes Abortig the recovery process Recoverig the system without chagig partitios 1 Press C to keep your curret partitios. This is the recommeded optio if you do ot eed to modify the partitio sizes ad if you wat to restore your C: drive while keepig the data o your D: drive utouched. 2 Press G to proceed with the system recovery. 3 Follow the istructios o the scree. 4 Whe the recovery process is fiished, remove the Recovery CD-ROM from the drive ad press ay key to restart your otebook computer.

Select this optio oly if you eed chage the sizes of your partitios. Please ote that this optio will delete all existig data both o the C: ad D: drives before startig the recovery. 2 O the ext scree, press Y to cofirm the deletio of the curret partitios. 3 The ext scree displays a selectio of sizes for your ew C: drive. Accordig to the optio you select, the recovery process will create 1 or 2 partitios o the hard disk. (For more details o partitios, see the chapter About the Partitios of your Hard Disk Drive) 4 Cofirm your selectio o the ext scree ad wait util the ew partitios are created ad the otebook computer reboots. 5 The follow the steps described i the previous sectio Recoverig the system without chagig partitios. Abortig the recovery process The recovery process always wars you whe the decisio you are asked to take caot be udoe. Wheever possible, the recovery screes allow you either to go back to the previous scree, or to abort the recovery process. If your computer does ot start the system recovery utility. To help you fid or restore typical drivers eeded by your pre-istalled applicatios, you ca use the Applicatio Recovery CD-ROM. 1 First check whether the driver you pla to reistall is o the Applicatio Recovery CD-ROM. Oly device drivers that are ot delivered with Widows ca be foud i the Drivers directory. 2 Check all uderlyig sub-directories for the appropriate driver. 3 ext, lauch the Add ew Hardware wizard (i the Widows start meu, select Settigs, thecotrol Pael) to istall the appropriate device by browsig through the appropriate folders.

25 About the Partitios of your Hard Disk Drive 25 Default disk space allocatio About the Software o your otebook Computer About the Partitios of your Hard Disk Drive I My Computer or Widows Explorer, you may have oticed the My Computer availability of two drives (C: ad D:): your hard disk drive comes from the factory with 2 logical partitios: this does ot mea that your computer cotais two physical hard disks. Default disk space allocatio Whe you start usig your otebook computer, your C: drive cotais all the files required by Widows ad other pre-istalled software, while the D: drive comes empty. The D: drive is the ideal storage space for all your documets, especially big oes like digital motio pictures captured with DVgate.

26 About the Partitios of your Hard Disk Drive 26 How to use your partitioed drives About the Software o your otebook Computer While you ca perform a system recovery ad chage the partitio settigs i order to have oe C: drive oly, this optio is ot recommeded for usig video editig applicatios like DVgate. For more iformatio, see the DVgate olie help (Recommeded settigs topic). How to use your partitioed drives I order to avoid mishadlig or malfuctio of your software ad files, please take the followig precautios: To optimize data storage, use the C: drive to istall ew applicatios, ad save all your documets to the D: drive. Moreover, doig so will prevet the loss of your documets i the case you eed to perform a system recovery. Do ot try to add, delete, or resize partitios uless you really eed it. Chagig partitio settigs might delete all your files o the hard disk. If you eed to perform a system recovery, but do ot wat to loose all the data stored o your hard disk, copy all the files you wat to keep o the D: drive. Durig the system recovery process, choose to keep the curret partitio iformatio. Doig so will keep your D: drive uchaged after the recovery process.
