Hardware Announcement January 3, 26 IBM System i5 52 Express Configurations Improved scalability, flexibility, and performance Overview System i5 52 Express Configurations, which provide ready-to-run, fixed configurations tailored specifically for small to medium-sized enterprises, are refreshed with advanced POWER5 processors, granularity improvements, and other enhancements. New System i5 52 Express Configurations with advanced POWER5 processors deliver improved scalability with up to 58% CPW growth over the previously offered Express Edition configurations..9ghz processors increase capacity to handle additional workloads. New Capacity on Demand option, Accelerator for System i5, expands flexibility for select configurations. New and improved prepackaged configurations let you choose the offering that best fits your requirements. Additional hardware enhancements provide more function and flexibility. Planned availability date February 4, 26 At a glance Advanced IBM POWER5 processors Capacity on Demand with Accelerator for System i5 Multiple prepackaged configurations New I/O adapters and controllers For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or the Americas Call Centers at 8-IBM-CALL Reference: AE This announcement is provided for your information only. Description New System i5 52 Express Configurations include these features: The latest advanced POWER5.9GHz processors significantly increase the capacity to handle additional workload. The starting capacity of 6 CPW provides a 2% larger CPW rating than the previously offered model 52 Express Edition entry configuration. Select System i5 52 Express Configuration offerings feature a new Capacity on Demand option, Accelerator for System i5. You benefit from the simplicity of a single system that can dynamically scale, on demand, to meet your changing business requirements. This new optional feature for the 6 and 2 CPW systems provides a dramatic boost in processor CPW for additional workloads such as added partitions and Java or WebSphere applications. With Accelerator: 6 CPW (with 3 CPW for 525) is boosted to 3 CPW. 2 CPW (with 6 CPW for 525) is boosted to 38 CPW. New DDR2 memory features provide higher speed and more flexible pair plugging rules. The HSL-2/RIO-2 loop is an optional feature. The imbedded 4MB write cache option #5727/#95 for the 52 Express imbedded controller provides cache-performance gains and RAID-5 capability for the disk drives in the system unit. They are the equivalent to the previously shipped #579/#959. New and improved IOAs and controllers are available, including a new entry disk controller with refreshed technology and RAID-6 disk protection. Model 52 Express Configurations overview The 945 model 52 Express Configurations are -way servers based on advanced POWER5 technology. All System i5 52 Express Configurations include hardware and i5/os. Each model 52 system unit has: Eight memory slots Six PCI-X slots Eight disk slots (four optionally enabled) One half-high slot for tape devices (3GB QIC drive included) Two slimline slots for DVD drives (one DVD ROM drive included) Two Gbps/Mbps/Mbps Ethernet LAN ports Two SPCN ports Two serial ports Two HMC ports Two USB ports i5/os V5R3 and V5R4 support the use of all of the preceding hardware elements except one slimline slot, two serial ports, and two USB ports. These components are reserved for other operating systems running on the 52. i5 52 Express Configurations that implement partitioning require an IBM 73 Hardware Management Console (HMC) if they include: Multiple i5/os partitions AIX partitions Linux partitions that require more function than provided by i5/os virtual partition manager. The HMC is not required for a partition to run, but it is required for the server to create, define, and change an HMC-created partition. An HMC can also serve as an i5/os system console. Multiple partitions and multiple advanced POWER5 processor-based servers can be supported by an HMC, located locally or remotely attached to the System i5 solution. System i5 52 Express Configurations are available only as deskside servers at initial order. They can later be converted to a rack-mount configuration, or additional features can be added by chargeable MES orders. Configurations are shipped from IBM with a twinaxial workstation controller and the system console specification as a twinaxial workstation. Entry, Entry Plus, Growth, and Turbo configurations feature mirrored disk protection. Entry Plus with RAID, Growth with RAID, and Turbo with RAID configurations feature RAID disk protection. Attributes, as defined in the following feature descriptions, state the interaction of requirements among features. Minimums and maximums are the absolute limits for a single feature without regard to interaction with other features. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different than for initial orders. The maximums refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities. The order type indicates whether a feature is orderable only on initial orders, only on MES orders, on both initial and MES orders, or if a feature is supported on a model due to a model conversion. Supported features cannot be ordered on the converted model. They can only be left on or removed from the converted model. Product positioning If you need a System i5 solution to support small application workloads and do not see growth beyond a -way system, the model 52 offers a choice between the 946 model 52 Value Edition and 945 model 52 Express Configurations. The 946 model 52 Value Edition offers a base system from which to build a customized configuration. The Value Edition provides choice and flexibility in creating an entry-level system to match your exact specifications in a build-to-order fashion. The 945 52 Express Configurations offer a choice of attractively priced, prepackaged configurations that include the hardware, software, and support to satisfy requirements common to many small to medium-sized businesses. Each is a complete, integrated, entry-level system that is simple to use and provides the foundation to run a broad range of applications. Use of these facilities is optional. The security measures supplied by i5/os are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The i5/os security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the i5/os controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. This announcement is provided for your information only. For additional information, contact your IBM representative, call 8-IBM-4YOU, or visit the IBM home page at: http://www.ibm.com. IBM Electronic Services IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eserver. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Service Agent. Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eserver system. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. To take full advantage of Electronic Services on an IBM eserver i5 running AIX 5L, you should install Service Agent under AIX 5L to assist in reporting AIX operating system-related problems. To learn how Electronic Services can work for you, visit http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic Terms and conditions Feature section Same license terms and conditions as designated machine. 6-8 -2-
