Demo

INTRODUCTION Thank you for taking the time to review this demonstration version of CheckPro for Century 21. CheckPro is a perfect companion to the Century 21 textbooks. Students can use the software to complete most of the drills, timed writings, and document exercises presented in Cycles 1-3 of the text. The drill practice and timed writings features are built right into the CheckPro program. For the document exercises, CheckPro works in conjunction with Microsoft Word 2000. Students key documents using the word processor and then CheckPro error-checks their work. This demo guide will walk you through the main sections of CheckPro. For more detailed information, refer to the online help available throughout the program. 2

ALTERED FUNCTIONS Please keep in mind that this is a demo version and that certain functions have been altered for demonstration purposes. For example: You may log in using the Guest option only. No student record of work done will be saved. However, documents keyed in the word processor will be saved. You cannot create new students or new classes. You can view those screens, but will then have to click the Cancel button to exit them. Only four lessons are available in the demonstration version of the software, Lessons 22, 29, 31, and 39. Supplemental Writings and Supplemental Documents and Tests are not available. The Send To feature is disabled. 3

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS The following minimum system requirements are necessary to run the CheckPro software: PC (or 100% compatible) with a Pentium/75 MHz or higher processor, 4 MB memory (8 MB recommended), Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000 (or a more recent version, SuperVGA monitor capable of displaying 256 color, and a hard disk. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE To install the CheckPro demonstration program on your hard drive, follow the instructions below. 1. Insert the CheckPro Demo CD into the CD drive 2. Click the Start menu and choose Run. 3. Key d:\setup (where d: is your CD drive) and strike Enter. 4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation process. 4

USING CHECKPRO Once you ve completed the installation, feel free to explore the functions on your own or follow along using this guide. Login 1. For this demonstration version of CheckPro, only the Guest option is available. The Guest option allows you full access to the demo; however, no student records will be saved. Launch CheckPro if you haven t already. Click on the Guest button, and key your name to enter CheckPro. You are now at the main screen. 5

Main Screen 2. The main screen is the central navigation point for the entire program. From here you can select a lesson or access the supplemental writings/documents. Choose Lesson 29 by clicking on the up arrow or keying 29 so that 29 displays in the Go To field. Then click on the Go To button or strike ENTER. You are now at a lesson screen. 6

Lesson Screen 3. The lesson screen contains more activity options. Each activity corresponds directly with the activities for that lesson in the Century 21 textbook. Click on the icon next to Conditioning Practice, 29A, to complete the drill. Key the drill from the screen right in the CheckPro program. When you ve completed the drill, click on the yellow back arrow to return to the lesson screen. 7 4. Now it s time to complete a document. Click on the icon next to Formatting, 29B, Letter 1, p. 85. You ll get a dialog box with important information and then your word processor will be

8 launched. Notice that CheckPro creates a document for you with the correct file name. You do not create a new document you key in this one. Key 29B, Letter 1, from page 85 in the Century 21 textbook. When you are done, do not save the file. Instead, click on the check mark on the floating button bar. CheckPro will then save your document and open up a checked version of it back in CheckPro for you to review your errors. Notice that your errors are marked with proofreaders marks in the copy, and indicated with numbers in the margin. Those numbered errors are then further explained in the document report below. When you are done viewing your errors, click Close to return to the lesson screen. 5. Notice that the icons next to the 29C activities look different than those next to 29B. Due to the nature of these documents, they cannot be checked. However, students can still select them from the lesson screen and complete the activity. CheckPro will record that the activity was completed and the time on task, but will not mark errors or report gwam. 6. Now let s try another lesson. Click on the back button (the yellow back arrow) to return to the main screen. Select lesson 39. Assessment 39B is a production test. In the tests,

9 students must key the documents in the book in the order they are presented, finishing one completely before moving on to the next. Click on the icon next to Assessment 39B. A blank document has been opened for RPT39B1 (Document 1). Key this report. When you are done, take a look at the floating button bar. It is different. Instead of a back arrow as the middle button, there is now a forward arrow; click on it when you are ready to move on to the next document in the test. You now have a blank document for RPT39B2 (Document 2). Key the References List. When you complete it, click the check mark. CheckPro will save your documents and open them for you to review. This time, in CheckPro s checked-document viewer there are Previous and Next buttons for navigating through the multiple checked documents. Click Close to return to the lesson screen. 7. Assessment 39C is a timed writing. Click on the icon next to the activity name; you will see the Timed Writings Settings dialog box. Make the appropriate selections and then click OK. Key the timed writing from your textbook. When time expires, your gwam and errors are reported on screen. After reviewing the results, click No at the bottom of the screen to return to the lesson screen.

Reports 8. There are a number of reports available in CheckPro. Click on the Reports menu to see the selection. The Lesson Report provides a snapshot of a student s results for a specific lesson. Click on the Activity Checklist to see an overview of which activities have been completed. This report indicates the date each activity was completed, but provides no further information. Close the Activity Checklist and choose the Reports menu, Summary Report to view Drill, Timed Writing, Document, and Production Test summaries. 10

Instructor Utilities 9. The instructor utilities provide several options that let you customize the CheckPro keyboarding software to meet your particular needs. For example, you can change a student s information (name, class, password, and preferences) and you can organize your students into groups (or classes). The instructor utilities also provide the capability to prepare reports and charts, assign grades, set the data location, and change your password. 11

Using the Update Class Information you can add new classes, delete a class, edit various class settings, or copy information between classes. To access the instructor utilities, click on the back icon until you are back at the Student Registration screen. Hold down the ALT key and click the Open button. Enter ChkProC21 when prompted for the password to display the instructor utilities main screen. 12
