3 What You Need on Your Computer to Run PKB Paradigm Keyboarding with Snap Walking Tour Welcome to Paradigm Keyboarding with Snap! This walking tour is meant to guide you through the main features of Paradigm Keyboarding with Snap (PKB), the keyboarding and document production software that accompanies Paradigm Keyboarding: Sessions 1-30, 5 th ed., Paradigm Keyboarding & Applications: Sessions 1-60, 5 th ed., and Paradigm Intermediate Keyboarding & Applications: Sessions , 5 th ed. Your Paradigm College Account Manager (referred to in PKB as your sales representative ) will provide you with login information to see PKB as an instructor and as a student. The following are the minimum system requirements for using PKB on your computer: Processor: Intel Celeron 600Mhz or higher Memory: 128 MB minimum (256 MB highly recommended for Windows XP) Operating System: Windows XP Home/Professional (with SP1), Windows 2000 (with SP4) Web Browser Settings: Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher Scripting and cookies enabled within Internet Explorer Any pop-up blocking software disabled for keyboarding.emcp.com Configured to download and run signed ActiveX controls and plug-ins Screen Resolution: 800 x 600 in 16 bit color Firewall Settings: Firewall on your computer set to allow data transfer to and from keyboarding.emcp.com. User Privileges for Installing ActiveX Control (first time only)*: Windows XP Administrative privileges are required to install the ActiveX control for the first time. Windows 2000 Power user (or higher) privileges are required to install the ActiveX control for the first time. *These user privileges are needed to install the Paradigm Keyboarding plug-in when doing exercises the first time. Once the plug-in has been installed, you can run the application with lesser privileges (for example, as restricted users or guest account users). Preparing Internet Explorer for PKB In order to view PKB in Internet Explorer, 1) disable any pop-up blocking software; 2) enable scripts and cookies; and 3) enable signed ActiveX controls and plug-ins. To enable scripts and cookies in Internet Explorer, take the following steps: 1. Click Tools and then click Internet Options. 2. Click Privacy. 3. Select Medium on the Privacy slider. 4. Click OK. To ensure that Active X controls and plug-ins are enabled in Internet Explorer, take the following steps: 1. Click Tools and then click Internet Options. 2. Click the Security Tab. 3. Select Internet from the list of zones displayed. The security level for this zone should be set at Medium. If not, follow any of the methods mentioned below. Paradigm Publishing 1

4 Method 1 - Utilizing the default Zone Security Settings (Recommended) 1. Click the Default Level button. 2. Click OK. Method 2 - Customizing the Internet Zone Security Settings 1. Click the Custom Level button. 2. Navigate to the section entitled ActiveX controls and plug-ins. 3. Locate the heading entitled Download signed ActiveX controls and click Prompt. 4. Locate the heading entitled Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting and click Enable. 5. Navigate to the section entitled Downloads. 6. Locate the heading entitled File download and click Enable. 7. Navigate to the section entitled Scripting. 8. Locate the heading Active scripting and click Enable. 9. Click OK to save your changes. 10. Click OK again to shut the window. Your Paradigm College Account Manager (referred in PKB as your sales representative) will create a course for you built around the Paradigm Keyboarding 5e book or books you are adopting for your class. He or she will also create an Instructor profile for you, and will send you by your Login Name and Password with which you can enter PKB. 2 Paradigm Publishing

5 Using PKB as an Instructor: Requesting Courses and Setting Up Sections To view PKB as an instructor, take the following steps: Step 1: Go to Step 2: Enter your login name and password in the text boxes provided to you in the bottom-right of your screen. Login names and passwords are case sensitive. Requesting a Course If your Paradigm College Account Manager has not already created a course for you, you can request one after logging on to PKB by taking the following steps: Step 1: Point to Courses and click Request New Course. Step 2: Select the book or books for which you want the Snap courseware assigned to your course. Step 3: Enter a course name and course number. Try to incorporate a time reference into one or both; for example, Introduction to Keyboarding Fall 06 or IT 200 F06. Step 4: Choose a duration for your course. Step 5: Click Request. Your Paradigm College Account Manager will receive your request and create a course for you, and you will receive an alerting you that the course has been created. Once the course is created it will appear on your PKB View Courses page. Creating Sections Once you have a course set up in PKB, you need to set up sections for the students of your course. PKB will generate a unique login name for each section you create. Your Paradigm College Account Manager will also provide you with some student passwords to use to log into the sections you create within your course. To create a section, take the following steps: Step 1: Point to Sections and click New Section. Step 2: Select a course by clicking on the drop down menu. Step 3: Enter details for the new section. Note: Fields marked with red asterisks are required fields. Paradigm Publishing 3

6 By default, the Login Name is set by PKB. (In this example, it is pkb3109. ) Step 4: If you want your students to use the Backspace and Delete keys when doing keyboarding exercises, check Allow Backspace. Step 5: Click the Add button. Step 6: Finally, verify details for the new section and click OK. Using PKB as a Student: Doing an Exercise Taking an Exam To view PKB as a student, use the login name from the section you created (for example, pkb3109) and a password provided by your Paradigm College Account Manager, and take the following steps (if you need additional passcodes contact your Account Manager): Step 1: Go to Step 2: Enter your login name and password in the text boxes provided to you in the bottom-right of your screen. Login names and passwords are case sensitive. Step 3: When you log into PKB for the first time as a student, you will be asked to verify if certain details about your course. You will only need to do this once. If the information displayed at this point is correct, click the Proceed button to continue. 4 Paradigm Publishing

7 Doing an Exercise Once you have logged in, your Paradigm Keyboarding with Snap Welcome page appears. This page lists all exercises within the training sessions for your course, and also states which exercises you have taken. It also has the PKB menu bar with which you can navigate from page to page in PKB. Launching an Exercise Click an exercise title hyperlink to launch it. The Launch Keyboarding dialog box is displayed. Click the Launch button to launch Paradigm Keyboarding. Paradigm Publishing 5

8 When you click the Launch button, a progress window is displayed while the necessary resource files are downloaded. Once Paradigm Keyboarding is launched, the following window is displayed. This window remains open in the background while Paradigm Keyboarding is running. Do not close this window while the PKB session is in progress. This window will shut down automatically when you exit the PKB session. When the Launch process is complete, the PKB Exercise screen appears. 6 Paradigm Publishing

9 The PKB Sessions screen features the following buttons and functions: Next Activity/Previous Activity These buttons take you to the next or previous activity within an exercise. Next Exercise/Previous Exercise These buttons take you to the next or previous exercise of the program. These will provide the most common way of moving through the program. Navigation Bar This feature allows you to move to any session and exercise within the program. Click on the orange panel with your mouse and a tree menu showing all of PKB s sessions and exercises appears. Spanish/English This toggle button allows you to view most software instructions in Spanish. Click the button to see instructions in Spanish. Click it again to see them in English. Close This button closes the Sessions screen and returns you to the Welcome page. Exiting an Exercise You can exit an exam at any time by clicking the Close items completed will be scored and saved.) button. Click Yes at the PKB message box to exit. Using PKB as an Instructor: Viewing Reports and File Submissions Now log back on to PKB using your instructor login name and password. PKB provides you with a wide variety of reports to monitor and record student performance, and gives you the opportunity to see each student s work. Viewing Reports PKB provides you with a wide variety of reports that show you the performance of both individual students and sections. This Walkthrough will show you how to take a look at the Progress Report. The Progress Report lists the sessions and exercises completed by the section and by each student. To view the Progress Report, take the following steps: Step 1: Point to Reports and click Progress Report. Step 2: Select a course and section and click the Go button. Step 3: Select a session and a student and choose viewing options to customize the display of the report. Paradigm Publishing 7

10 Step 4: Click the Show Report button. The report is displayed as a pop-up window. Step 5: Click Close link to close the report. PKB Files The View Submissions Report page allows you to view all session, timings, and/or production files submitted by students on completion of various session exercises in a course. Step 1: Point to Reports and click View Submissions. Step 2: Select a course and a section and click the Go button. All the students enrolled in the selected course section will then be displayed in the list box below. Step 3: Select your student name to view the session file the program created for you when you did an exercise as a student. Step 4: Select Show session files. Selecting this option displays document created in your session exercises. Step 5: Click the Show Report button. Step 6: Click the hyperlink of the file for the session in which you did the exercise. Step 7: At the Word Processor dialog box, click Launch. The session file, showing all the keying you did in the exercise, will display in the Paradigm Word Processor. PKB Help You can access the Help feature, which lists and describes the functions in PKB arranged by their menu sub-headings, by clicking the Help link at the top of your screen. You also can download detailed Instructor and Student Users Guides by clicking the links at the bottom of your screen. PKB Support As an instructor, you can contact PKB technical support by clicking the Support link at the bottom of your home page. Just choose your support category, type in your question/request, and click the Send button.
