A GUIDE TO USING PUBLISHERS RESOURCES MODULE 3 Navigating and using the resources available through HINARI partner publishers. 1. Finding the HINARI website The HINARI website can be found at www.healthinternetwork.org The HINARI home page will open. On the left-hand side of the web page there is the option to select the language that you wish to use. Just click on the appropriate hyperlink to change the language on the web pages. Select the HINARI LOG IN hyperlink which will take you to the HINARI log in page. When the log in page opens enter your personal HINARI user ID and password into the log in boxes and then select the sign on button to access the HINARI site. Logging in to HINARI will provide authentication when you visit a publisher resource. 27/08/2004 1
2. Partner publisher services On the upper half of the right-hand side of the web page there are links to Partner publisher services. There is a dropdown menu next to the text box, clicking on the arrow will display the list of publishers. If you click on the publisher name you will be taken to their website. Exercise 1 Go to Partner publisher services and from the dropdown list select Blackwell Publishing by clicking on it. A new window will open and you should be authenticated at the site for Blackwell publishing. You should now have the Blackwell Synergy Home page open. 27/08/2004 2
3. The Blackwell Synergy website 3.1. The home page You can access several features from the Blackwell Synergy home page. You can locate articles or journal titles, register for a personal profile and create an order for the table of contents service. 3.2. Locating a journal 27/08/2004 3
To select a journal from the Blackwell collection go to the Quicklink section on the home page, highlight the title from the dropdown list and then click on Go. This will take you to the journal home page within the Blackwell website. Exercise 2 Try this with the Tropical Medicine and International Health journal now. 3.3 The journal home page On the journal home page there is a list of the issues that are available. This is organised in date order. To access the issue you want click on the hyperlink for the issue. Exercise 3 In Tropical Medicine and International Health journal. Select one of the issues for this year by clicking on the hyperlink. The table of contents page for the journal issue will open. 3.4 The table of contents page At the top of the table of contents page you are able to view other contents pages by navigating to previous issues, the next issue or all issues by using the hyperlinks. You can also sign up for free tables of contents that can be sent to your email address. 27/08/2004 4
Lower down the table of contents page there is a list of the articles published in the issue. Next to the title of the article there are navigation links that allow you to view the summary, abstract, references and full text. There is a choice to view the full text article in either HTML or Adobe PDF format. The HTML format appears as a web page with hyperlinked sections to references and tables. The PDF format allows you to view the article as it would appear in print. Selecting the PDF format opens a new window showing the article within it. You can select to print this; then when you have finished close the extra window. 3.5 Searching the journals The QuickSearch feature allows you to search for keywords across the journal or in all the journals. Go to the Tropical Medicine and International Health journal table of contents page. Enter the term Malaria into the QuickSearch query box and select to search This journal. Click on Search. You will have over 400 results. Search results are displayed showing the number of matches found and the search criteria for your search. It is possible to order your results by relevancy and date. You can narrow the search further by searching for another term, within the results you have already found, using the query box under Narrow your search. This allows you to search for a term within the set of results already found. Exercise 5 Continue with the search in exercise 4. by entering the term bednets in the Narrow your search query box. You should find around 80 results and the search query is now malaria AND bednets. 3.6 Searching the Blackwell Publishing website It is possible to search across the publisher s website as the website is a database of articles. You can do this from the publisher s home page.to do this you enter your terms into the Search query box and it will automatically be searched across All journals. If you wish to narrow the search within the results found use the Narrow your search query box. You can view the articles found in HTML or PDF format. When you look at the articles found in your search if you select the HTML view your search terms will be highlighted in yellow. Exercise 6 Go to the Blackwell Synergy home page by clicking on the hyperlink to Home. Enter the search term Schistosomiasis in the search box and click on Search. Search within these results by putting the term epidemiology in the Narrow your search box then click on Search. You should have around 163 articles. Click on the abstract of the first article and look for your search terms. 3.7 Subject categories It is also possible to find articles by subject category from the Blackwell Synergy home page. Follow the hyperlinks to the subject of interest. The Journals that are available to HINARI registered users have a green circle next to the title. 27/08/2004 6
3.8 Personal services Personal services are available to users who have registered on the Blackwell website. To register, select the Register button on the top toolbar. A registration form will open for you to complete. When you have completed it click on Register and the form will be submitted to Blackwell Publishing. There is no charge for this service which also includes email alerts, table of contents, saved searches and a customised homepage. After registration, users can select My Synergy and log on to the website. From your My Synergy account you can access your saved searches and sign up for table of contents services. Also you can amend your registration details and access other services. 4 Other Publishers websites Each publisher s website has a different appearance, however they all offer similar services. On the Elsevier ScienceDirect website you can access an A-Z journal list, search the database and set up alerts. ScienceDirect also allows users to search across journals within the Elsevier collection. Your search terms are highlighted within the results found and searches can be narrowed by adding extra terms. The Wiley Interscience website also contains a list of journals, a search facility and a registered user log in. You can browse the Wiley journals by subject or use an A-Z list. 5 Next This is the end of this module if you wish to practice negotiating publishers resources go to the exercises in the appendix. APPENDIX Exercise 1 Logging into HINARI and Opening Blackwell Synergy Open your Internet Browser. Go the HINARI website http://www.healthinternetwork.org Click on the HINARI LOG IN link. Enter your User ID and Password. From Partner Publisher Services list select Blackwell Publishing A new window with the Blackwell website should open. Exercise 2 Finding the journal Child: Care, Health and Development using quick link From the Blackwell Synergy homepage expand the dropdown list from the quick link box on the right hand side of the website. Scroll down the list and select Child: Care, Health and Development. Click on the Go button. Access the table of contents for the latest issue. Click on the Home button on the Blackwell website. Exercise 3 Finding the journal Child: Care, Health and Development using the subject listing From the Blackwell Synergy homepage click on the Health Sciences subject link. From the expanded list click on Health and Social Care subject link. From the expanded list click on Child: Care, Health and Development. What is the year and volume of the oldest issue available to HINARI users? Access the latest issue. Choose an article and click on full text. From within the full text article click on View/print PDF article. Click on the Home button on the Blackwell website. Exercise 4 Searching within the journal Tropical Medicine and International Health From the Blackwell Synergy home page find the journal Tropical Medicine and International Health either through quick link or the subject listings. Enter the term Schistosomiasis in the quick search box. Check the radio button search this journal and click on the search button. There should be OVER 120 references on Schistosomiasis? Narrow this down within the Narrow your search box, enter another search term diagnosis. Select an article from the results and access full text. Exercise 5 Searching across all journals From the Synergy home page enter the term Malaria in the search box and click on the Search button. You should have OVER 2300 articles as your result? Narrow your search by entering prevention and control in the Narrow your search box, click on Search. Narrow your search by entering antimalarials in the Narrow your search box, click on Search. Choose an article from the results list and print out a PDF version. Close the PDF window Click on the Home button on the Blackwell website Exercise 6 Register for a personal profile Click on the Register button on the top bar of the Blackwell Synergy website. Fill in all the boxes on the registration form. Click on the Register button on the bottom of the form. Click on the Home button on the Blackwell website. Log-in to the Blackwell Synergy website in the username & password box. Go to My Synergy by clicking on the My Synergy button. Click on the email alerts tab. Choose Tropical Medicine and International Health as a title you would like table of contents to be emailed to you. Click the submit button Close the browser Exercise 7 Logging into HINARI and Opening Elsevier Science - Science Direct Open your Internet Browser. Go the HINARI website http://www.healthinternetwork.org. Click on the HINARI LOG IN link. Enter your User ID and Password. From Partner Publisher Services list select Elsevier Science - Science Direct. A new window with the Elsevier Science - Science Direct website should open. Exercise 8 Finding the journal The Lancet From the Science Direct homepage click on the Journals button. An A- Z Option should now be displayed. 27/08/2004 9
Click on the L link. From the list of journals beginning with L choose The Lancet. Access the latest issue. From the Quick Search box enter the term Tuberculosis and select within this journal from the dropdown list. You should have over 3000 Lancet articles with Tuberculosis in the results. Click on the Home button on the Science Direct website. Exercise 2 Searching across Science Direct Click on the Journals button. Enter the term plasmodium falciparum in the Quick Search box and search within all journals, click on Go. There should be OVER 3800 results. Enter vaccine in the Search within Results box and click on the Search within Results button. There should be OVER 1200 articles. Enter TDR in the Search within Results box and click on the Search within Results button. There should be OVER 90 articles, select an article from the results and choose full text with links format.
