User s Guide IP-201 I2C Bus Multiplexer Board Revision 1 Micro Computer Control Corporation www.mcc-us.com
4 Channel I 2 C Multiplexer Board Model IP-201 User, s Guide Overview I 2 C Bus is the Inter-Integrated Circuit serial bus developed by Philips Semiconductor for inter-ic communications in consumer electronics products such as stereos, televisions, and VCRs. This highly efficient and cost effective communications link is now being adopted by leading technology companies worldwide for chip, board, and system level communications. An I 2 C Bus network can support up to 127 Master or Slave devices with a simple 2-wire interface. I 2 C devices can be as simple as RAM, EEPROM, or I/O devices, or have the fullblown processing power of an embedded microcontroller or microprocessor.
3 The IP-201 is a 4 channel I 2 C Bus Multiplexer Board that provides an easy way to connect multiple I 2 C Buses to a common I 2 C Bus port. The IP-201 lets you connect to multiple I 2 C based products from a common I 2 C Bus port while avoiding I 2 C Bus Address conflicts. Key Features * Connect a Common I 2 C Port to one of four (4) separate I 2 C Buses. * Bus selection controlled directly over the I 2 C Bus. No extra Hardware required. * Able to Disconnect from ALL attached Buses. * LED indicators show selected Bus. * Uses one Jumper Selectable I 2 C Address (40...4E). * Use multiple IP-201 Multiplexers in Linear (up to 32 Buses) or Cascading (up to 64K Buses) Topologies. * Based on the ipack Stackable Board Format. * Supports Stacked or Remote board configurations.
Packing Slip The IP-201 I 2 C Multiplexer kit includes the following items: 1. The IP-201 I 2 C Multiplexer Board. 2. I 2 C Interface Cable. 3. Configuration Instructions. Interconnects The IP-201 I 2 C Multiplexer Board includes the following interconnections: 1. +5VDC Power The IP-201 I 2 C Multiplexer Board can be powered in one of three ways, from any I 2 C interface connector, from the ipack stacking connector (J1), or from the power jack.
If the unit is powered from the power jack (J3), a +5VDC Wall Transformer (MCC Part# MWT-5VA) is required. 2. I 2 C Interface Connectors The IP-201 I 2 C Multiplexer Board includes two common (PCOM and J1) and four selectable (P0,P1,P2,P3) connectors (Molex Part#15-83-0064 Socket, #15-83-1564 Plug) for interfacing to external I 2 C Buses. Lines provided include: 1. I 2 C Clock (SCL) 2. I 2 C Data (SDA) 3. Ground 4. +5VDC (Optional) An I 2 C Interface Cable (White=SCL, Red=+5VDC, Green=SDC, Black=Ground) is provided to connect to an external I 2 C Bus. Additional two connector four foot long interface cables (MCC Part# CAB4) are available. The IP-201 Multiplexer Board includes an onboard Mux Controller device with a selectable I 2 C Slave Address. Jumpers are provided that allows the Mux Controller device to be assigned to one of eight possible I 2 C addresses. The address selected for the Mux Controller device should not be the same as any I 2 C device on any of the selectable I 2 C channels.
The IP-201 I 2 C Slave Address is controlled by positioning jumper blocks on header connector ADDR on the board as follows: A2 A1 A0 Multiplexer Controller I 2 C Slave Address OFF OFF OFF 0x4E OFF OFF ON 0x4C (Factory Default Setting) OFF ON OFF 0x4A OFF ON ON 0x48 ON OFF OFF 0x46 ON OFF ON 0x44 ON ON OFF 0x42 ON ON ON 0x40 Selecting An I 2 C Bus Port The IP-201 Multiplexer Board provides one common and 4 selectable I 2 C Bus ports. The Mux Controller device on the Multiplexer Board is always connected to the common port. Writing a one byte I 2 C message to the Mux Controller device controls which if any selectable port is connected to the common port. The Mux Controller data byte value and the selected I 2 C Bus port is as follows: Data 0x00 0x01 0x02 0x03 0x04 I 2 C Port Selected P0 P1 P2 P3 None Once a port is selected, all I 2 C messages sent to the common port will appear at the selected port. All I 2 C messages sent to the selected port will appear at the common port.
