RESEARCH FORECAST REPORT WIRELESS NETWORK DATA TRAFFIC IN EMERGING ASIA PACIFIC: TRENDS AND FORECASTS 2016 2021 STEPHEN WILSON and CAI SHIYU Analysys Mason Limited 2017 analysysmason.com

About this report This report presents 5-year forecasts of wireless data traffic worldwide for Emerging Asia-Pacific (EMAP), as a whole and for selected countries. It analyses the key trends in, and drivers and inhibitors of, data traffic. The forecast dataset underpinning this report covers: mobile data: data delivered over mobile (cellular) networks to: handsets (typically smartphones); mid-screen devices (typically tablets); USB modems, routers and other standalone data devices; median usage per smartphone; and downstream and upstream Wi-Fi data: data delivered over private Wi-Fi connections (at home or work) to handsets and mid-screen devices, and data delivered to all devices using public Wi-Fi connectivity. The report assesses the enablers of future capacity on wireless networks and the cost of supplying that capacity. It also analyses the trends in private and public usage, and their effect on the use of mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity. This report is based on Analysys Mason s: internal research and modelling consumer surveys on smartphone and tablet usage. Our forecasts are informed and sense-checked by on-the-ground regional market experts. Summary of report coverage Geographical coverage Regions modelled: Worldwide Emerging Asia-Pacific (EMAP) Countries modelled individually: China India Indonesia Malaysia Philippines Thailand Major KPIs Mobile data Total volume and average usage for: handsets mid-screen devices USB modems and routers Traffic split by: public and private usage median usage per smartphone downstream and upstream Wi-Fi data Total volume and average usage for: handsets mid-screen devices, split by mobile-connected and Wi-Fi-only devices laptops (public Wi-Fi connectivity only) Traffic split by: public and private usage. Contents 5. Executive summary 6. Executive summary 7. Worldwide trends 8. Worldwide: The rate of growth for cellular data traffic will slow considerably during the forecast period 9. Worldwide: Rapid 4G adoption in India and China is driving cellular data traffic growth 10. Worldwide: Even in 2021 there will still be some correlation between income levels and monthly handset usage 11. Worldwide: Dongle and router traffic is not set to account for a large proportion of traffic across most emerging markets 12. Worldwide: Public Wi-Fi traffic s share of total out-of-home traffic is declining in developed markets 13. Worldwide: There continues to be little correlation between cellular data traffic growth and operator revenue 14. Worldwide: Removing unlimited throttled speed prepaid data quotas can significantly reduce traffic, but its commercial impact has been mixed 15. Worldwide: Offering unlimited throttled speed video traffic need not increase video traffic and could be a significant differentiator 16. Regional trends 17. Emerging Asia Pacific: Growth rates have been highest in China, India and Indonesia 18. Emerging Asia Pacific: The region will continue to lead in global cellular data traffic growth rates in 2017 19. Country-level trends 20. China: Widespread 4G coverage and OTT service bundling will drive mobile traffic growth 21. India: Reliance Jio s LTE-only market entry in 2016 has boosted 4G connections and data usage 22. Indonesia: Bonus 4G data quotas are boosting traffic in the short term, but MNOs will move away from this approach 23. Malaysia: New entrants will further intensify competition, prompting responses from existing players 24. Philippines: Cellular traffic from dongles and routers will continue to account for a large percentage of total traffic 25. Thailand: Expansion of 4G networks and higher smartphone penetration will drive traffic growth 26. Forecast methodology and assumptions 27. Definition of geographical regions [1] 28. Emerging Asia Pacific: Growth rates have been highest in China, India and Indonesia Network-related constraints on cellular data traffic growth have eased in a number of markets in emerging Asia Pacific. Figure 12: Annual rate of growth, cellular data traffic, selected emerging Asia Pacific markets, 2014 2017 Percentage growth in usage per head of population in 2016 more than doubled in China, Indonesia and India. In China the rapid migration to 4G helps to explain much of the growth as usage on China s 3G TD-SCDMA networks was constrained by network quality. Chinese cellular usage has also been boosted by continuing moves away from public Wi-Fi. In Indonesia, challenger MNOs such as XL Axiata and Indosat have been very aggressive in offering bonus data allowances for 4G subscribers as they attempt to attract higher value customers. MNOs have also benefited from strong growth in the number of 3G connections, which in turn has been driven by increasing coverage. For example, Indosat increased its number of 3G base stations by 16% in the year to end September 2016. Figure 13: Cellular data traffic per head of population per month, selected emerging Asia Pacific markets, 2015 and 2016 Growth in India has been significantly boosted by the entry of Reliance Jio, which already had 50 million subscribers at the start of December 2016. The MNO has been offering free unlimited data, with the only constraint being a maximum cap of 4GB per day as it attempts to make inroads into the market. Usage per head of population in Malaysia and Thailand is much higher than in the region s other markets. Indeed, usage in these markets is on a par with that in most Western European markets. This reflects highly competitive markets where MNOs have moved to boost subscriber data allowances. Analysys Mason Limited 2017 17

Emerging Asia Pacific: The region will continue to lead in global cellular data traffic growth rates in 2017 EMAP Annual growth rates in emerging Asia Pacific will continue to outstrip those in all other regions in 2017. Figure 14: Cellular data traffic by market and 4G device share, emerging Asia Pacific, 2014 2021 In India, growth rates will be boosted by the entry of Reliance Jio, which has intensified competition in the 4G market. The company already had 50 million users at the start of December 2016, which shows that concerns over the cost of 4G devices are beginning to fade. China will also experience strong growth as it continues to catch up with other countries from the position of having very low pre-4g rollout usage figures. MNOs in China have benefitted from a rapid migration to 4G generated by strong investment in coverage, and MNOs are taking an active role in selling TD-LTE capable handsets. The rest of EMAP will account for a growing share of cellular data traffic. Growth rates in Bangladesh are amongst the highest in the world and this, as in Sub-Saharan Africa, is largely being driven by an increase in usage per subscriber, rather than a growing number of data subscriber. In Bangladesh, MNOs have made significant investments in increasing 3G coverage, and migration from 2G to 3G data is producing strong traffic growth. The impact of substitutive mobile broadband will be limited by extensive fibre roll-outs from MNOs in markets such as China, Thailand and Vietnam. However, dongles and routers already play a significant role in the Philippines, where wireline competition is limited; they are forecast to account for 38% of total cellular data traffic in 2021.
