Software Announcement February 8, 2000 IBM Program Restart Facility for IMS Facilitates Automated Restarts Overview The IBM Program Restart Facility for IMS software helps ensure the correct restart checkpoint ID is used to restart IMS applications using IMS Extended Restart Facilities. Using Program Restart Facility capabilities requires no application program or JCL changes. An easy-to-use ISPF interface is provided for viewing, editing, and administrating product controls and options. The Program Restart Facility adds to an already robust portfolio of IBM database tools, and further demonstrates IBM s commitment to being the preferred provider of database tools solutions. Key Prerequisites The Program Restart Facility for IMS operates in the IMS Version 5, 6, and 7 environments. IMS Version 7 support will be provided as a PTF within 30 days of IMS Version 7 availability. Planned Availability Date March 10, 2000 At a Glance The Program Restart Facility for IMS can help you: Restart applications faster Reduce possibility of error during the restart process Reduce overhead caused by too frequent checkpointing Facilitate restarting applications in sysplex environment Facilitate automatic restart operations The product: Requires no application or JCL change for basic operation Provides ISPF interface for administration Uses minimum system resources For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: LE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. Description The IMS Program Restart Facility software is designed to help you correctly restart abended IMS batch jobs that take advantage of the IMS Extended Restart facility. Using IMS Program Restart Facility helps prevent data from becoming corrupted from restarting an abended job without specifying any restart checkpoint ID. Restarting the job correctly can help save you from costly and time-consuming database recoveries that could leave your data unavailable for extended periods of time. IMS Program Restart Facility automatically supplies the most recent checkpoint ID to jobs being restarted because of an earlier abnormal termination. This task may seem simple enough to perform manually. However, if a job being restarted is supplied a valid but incorrect checkpoint ID, or worse, is restarted without any supplied restart checkpoint ID, data can become corrupted. This can require costly and time-consuming database recoveries. Such situations are even more costly if the manual restart error is not detected right away, causing more delays and longer periods of database unavailability. IMS Program Restart Facility sets aside the checkpoint records in the IMS log required for a checkpoint restart. It automatically makes them available to the job requiring a restart without requiring manual JCL changes to provide the correct log data set names. Using IMS Program Restart Facility requires no changes to application code or JCL. Year 2000 This product does not have date dependencies and is Year 2000 ready. Euro Currency This program is not impacted by euro currency. Hardware and Software Support Services SmoothStart /Installation Services SmoothStart or Installation Services will not be provided for the Program Restart Facility. Trademarks IMS and SmoothStart are trademarks of International Business Machines Corporation in the United States or other countries or both. Other company, product, and service names may be trademarks or service marks of others. Additional Benefits: The following IMS Program Restart Facility features that if exploited, may require JCL and application programming changes. IMS Program Restart Facility can be used to reduce the overhead incurred by some applications that may be taking checkpoints too frequently. This can result in faster operations. Applications that terminate with a non-zero return code that should be considered abended can be flagged as abended and later restarted automatically using the IMS Program Restart Facility. If you are migrating to data sharing, specifying values for DBRC=, IRLM=, and IRLMNM= for individual jobs or globally without changing any JCL or running system definitions can be facilitated by using the IMS Program Restart Facility. IMS Program Restart Facility can be used to specify values for LOCKMAX= on individual jobs or globally without changing any JCL. This helps prevent abends related to filling up the lock table. IMS Program Restart Facility can be used to specify a list of candidate IMSIDs (as part of an IMSGROUP) that BMPs can signon to in order to avoid U0688 abends without changing the OPT= specification and without waiting for an operator reply to DFS690A messages. 200-015 -2-
