Setting up a new ipad This is a very brief guide to setting up an ipad for the first time. This is not the only way of setting up an ipad and there are many variables at play. If you have trouble at any point it is always good to use www.google.com to search for possible solutions. If you need additional assistance, please feel free to ask for help, but please be aware that connecting an ipad to your home wireless network is not something we can assist you with. It is recommended that you complete the 'How to create an itunes account WITHOUT a credit card' instructions, prior to completing this guide. Step 1 Upon powering up your new ipad for the first time, you ll be greeted with a black linen background and it will simply say ipad. The first step to setting up your ipad is to swipe your finger to the right where it says Slide to set up. You might see other languages, since you ve yet to set up the default language. Select your language and then tap on the blue arrow at the top right of your ipad.
Step 2 Next up, you ll select your country and region. Depending on where you purchased your ipad, this might already be selected and correct. When finished, select Next. Step 3 In the next step, you ll be able to enable Location Services. Location Services allows Maps, Camera and other apps to use your location to provide you with a more personal experience. As with any of these selections, you can always change them within settings. Make your selection and then select Next. We suggest to have it 'enabled'.
Step 4 Here s where you will set up your WiFi network. If your home network requires a password, you ll need to enter it here. Having Internet connectivity is critical to your ipad experience, so you will not want to skip this step in the ipad setup process. Select your WiFi network and enter the password and tap on the Next button. Connecting to the school WiFi will be handled by your child's classroom teacher early next year. Troubleshooting tip: Sometimes people might get confused as to which router is driving their WiFi coverage. If your desktop computer is connected by wire to your router, then type http://192.168.1.1. This will allow you to login to your router and see the router name. Default login information is often username: admin and password: password1 or password. If still unsure, you can usually find a factory reset button on the back of your router that will allow you to press and hold for 10 seconds. A quick Google search of the name, model of your router will reveal the default login information. Once connected, your ipad will attempt to activate. This can take seconds up to three minutes.
Step 5 You ll now be faced with three choices: Set Up as New ipad Restore from icloud Backup Restore from itunes Backup Since this is a new ipad, select the first choice and select Next. Step 6 At this point you will need an Apple ID. This is the email address associated with your itunes account, which is tied to a credit card. Select Sign In with an Apple ID or create a free Apple ID if you don t already have one. You ll see Terms and Conditions. Select Agree at the bottom right. If you already have one enter your Apple ID which is the e-mail account you used to create the account. Step 7 Next it will ask you to setup icloud. icloud is a 'cloud storage' service offered by Apple. Apple stores all of your content in icloud and pushes it wirelessly to all of your devices. Make one change on your new ipad and it ll populate on your iphone, Mac or other device. This is not necessary for students and we recommend against setting it up on ipads used principally by students.
It is however a free service and should not affect student use greatly. If you opt-in to icloud, then you can also utilize icloud Backup. icloud will automatically backup your ipad on a daily basis. Apple also offers the option of backing up to your computer. Make a selection that works best for you and select Next at the top right. It is recommended that students be responsible for backing up at least once a week. Step 8 If your ipad should be lost, stolen or even misplaced, Apple s Find My ipad service can be a lifesaver. This free service allows you to track any of your ios devices, if you opt-in. If you wish to use it select 'Use Find My ipad' and tap on Next. This requires Location Services to be set to on. It also allows information about the ipad (and your childrens') locations to be uploaded to Apple. Step 9 The next option is whether you want to allow Apple to collect anonymous data to improve upon their products and services. Select automatically send or don t send, then select Next. Step 10 The next option is whether you want to allow Apple to collect anonymous data to improve upon their products and services. Select automatically send or don t send, then select Next.
