1 Michael B. Nielsen Contact Information Research Areas Professional Department of Computer Science Ph: Aabogade 34 DK-8200 Aarhus N Web: bang Denmark My main interests involve researching, developing, implementing, verifying and validating mathematical models, data structures and algorithms for physics based numerical simulation of fluids and deformable solids in computer graphics and scientific computing. 17 refereed publications, 4 other publications (see bang for details) Assistant Professor March, Present (ends February, 2013) Research in physics based simulation of fluid and deformable solid phenomena. Weta Digital, Miramar (Wellington), New Zealand Researcher January, November, 2011 Weta Digital is the academy award winning visual effects company behind Avatar, Lord of the Rings and King Kong. I conducted research in and implemented (a) algorithms and numerical methods for animation control of high resolution liquid simulations (b) volumetric and spatially sparse algorithms and data structures for physics based simulation and rendering of fluids and hair. Postdoc August, January, 2010 Research in finite element, out-of-core, parallel data structures and algorithms for level set computations as well as research in mathematical models and numerical methods for fluid animation control. Digital Domain, Venice (Los Angeles), United States Research Intern April, May, 2005 Digital Domain is an academy award winning visual effects company that has contributed effects to movies such as Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I visited the software department as a research intern and worked on data structures and algorithms for high resolution level set computations. PhD student August, July, 2006 Research in efficient, flexible and out-of-core data structures and algorithms for high resolution level set computations for computer graphics and scientific computing. Research assistant in the Workspace project February, July, 2003 The objective of the Workspace project was to develop software components and hardware artifacts that could be combined and integrated into augmented reality work places. I developed a real-time augmented reality tracking system based on homographies to assist landscape architects on site. Student programmer in the Workspace project July, January, 2003
2 My work focused on video tracking and augmented reality. Student programmer in the DESARTE project August, June, 2001 The goal was to create a collaborative and distributed 3D virtual environment. My primary focus was on designing and implementing a 3D spatial parser capable of detecting implicit structures in the spatial layout of 3D objects. Student programmer in the COCONUT project December, July, 2000 The aim was to develop a generic infrastructure and tools for collaborative hypermedia over the internet. I designed and implemented the distributed cache in the infrastructure and the dynamic runtime system for the hypermedia client.
