3 4. PROGRAMME STRUCTURES AND REQUIREMENTS, LEVELS, MODULES, CREDITS AND AWARDS The programme is designed to be non-progressive and students do not require to pass at a particular level to progress to the next. However, there is a prerequisite for the MSc Project module. The students require to pass the Proposal element of the Research and Project Methods module as a prerequisite to undertaking the MSc Project. Each full time academic year consists of two teaching Trimesters followed by a third Trimester (over the summer period) devoted to the project. The teaching Trimesters each consist of 45 credits. In addition the Research and project methods module runs over trimester 1 and 2. Seven modules are taken in all. The programme is offered in the full-time and the part-time modes. The following illustrates the Full-time September start Programme Structure: Trimester A Title Credits Delivery MMH Wireless and Mobile Communication 15 SHEM systems MMH Antennas and Propagation 15 SHEM MMI Digital Communications 15 SHEM Trimester B Title Credits Delivery MMI Fundamentals of Simulation of 15 SHEM Computer Networks MMI Optical Communications 15 SHEM MMI Real-time Digital Signal Processing 15 SHEM 15 SHEM 15 SHEM Trimester C Title Credits Delivery MMH MSc Project * 60 SHEM N/A * Students carry out the Project from June to September of the same year to graduate in November. 3

6 Assessment Strategy The instruments of assessment used in the programme are unseen examinations and formal assessment exercises. Unseen examinations test the ability to recall knowledge and use it under strictly controlled conditions. The inherent delay in testing using an unseen examination, which is performed at the end of a Trimester, endeavours to ensure that recall and application of knowledge is of a long-term nature. This unseen examination tests the ability of the student to apply analytical and synthesis skills within the framework of a developed knowledge base under formal conditions and within a pre-determined time-frame. Unseen examinations will normally be of two hours duration. Formal continuous assessment exercises can be of a number of forms: Take-Home Exercises - coursework which test understanding without the element of recall, paper design exercises, or a topic to research and report on. In-Class Tests - tests (open or closed book) similar to formal examinations but under slightly relaxed conditions and the period of recall is shortened. In-Class Presentations, after researching a topic. The table below shows the overview of the assessment scheme and the weighting attached of each element. Title Coursework Written Exam SHEM Credits Wireless and Mobile Communication systems 30% 70% 15 Antennas and Propagation 30% 70% 15 Digital Communications 30% 70% 15 Fundamentals of Simulation of Computer Networks 50% 50% 15 Optical Communications 30% 70% 15 Real-time Digital Signal Processing 30% 70% 15 Research and Project Methods 100% 0 15 Professional Practice 100% 0 15 Project 100% 0 60 Assessment Overview Exit Awards Students who accumulate at least 60 Credits from the Programme will be awarded the unnamed PgC award. Students who accumulate at least 120 Credits will be awarded the PgD Telecommunications Engineering. Students who accumulate at least 180 Credits will be awarded the MSc Telecommunications Engineering.
