2 2 TECH NOTES The Trimble Survey Controller software appeals to your senses of sight, touch, and sound. And your common sense tells you that, because it s so easy to operate and does so many things so quickly, it s making you more productive and your work much easier. See right where you are, right now. View your job against a background map of the area any time, in real-time. The job map shows you all the points, lines, arcs and roads in the database; new survey points are plotted as they are collected. The background map shows you where the job points are relative to major topo features. The map automatically pans to your current position. It s a touching experience. The big picture is at your fingertips and all the details and commands too, when you need them. Access common tasks very quickly by tapping the touch screen with your finger or the stylus. Tap and hold on a map item (such as a point or a line) to see its features and the functions you can perform. Tap an active icon to see status details. Or use the big keypad to enter text and numbers. Now hear this! Pre-recorded sounds and audible messages alert you when something important happens you don t have to be looking at the display. Verbal directions help you get to the exact point during stakeout. You can customize the.wav-file sounds and translate the messages into your desired language. Speaking of language... Context-sensitive Help, in your preferred language, is always just a tap of the? key away. Single Job file or separate Job and Point files it s your choice. The traditional Job file stores the entire job for maximum convience: all points, lines, arcs, areas, attributes, full horizontal and vertical road alignments, road templates, Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) in Grid or Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) form, QA/QC data and calibration data. You can carry the entire survey from one field instrument to the other or back to your office computer for final processing. Or you can store data for each point in a commadelimited.csv file. This makes the Job file smaller and more manageable on large jobs (10,000 or more points, as is common in the Seismic industry). You get faster access to control or stakeout points. 6 6 TECH NOTES TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEYS Trimble Survey Controller software provides a complete set of topographic survey tools, including the ability to switch easily between GPS surveying instruments and conventional total stations. Seamless conventional and GPS surveying Switch seamlessly between a GPS survey and a robotic survey by having everything you need on one pole: the GPS antenna, prism, radio and the controller and all the data in one Job file! For example, to survey under a bridge, switch from GPS to a conventional survey in the same Job file and continue work without going back to the instrument. Total Trimble instrument control Several capabilities enhance your control of the Trimble 5600 Robotic instrument and save you time throughout the job. Operate the robotic total station remotely with the TSCe controller through the radio communication supplied with the robotic instrument ideal for one-person surveying! Measure points on Face 1 using the Averaged Observations method. Multiple automatic observations are made of horizontal and vertical angles and distance. The software then averages the observations for the most precise result. This process is similar to the popular Geodimeter D-bar mode and is especially helpful when doing traversing or other operations that require more accurate and reliable results. Search for the prism and find it faster with the configurable search window capabilities. Just point the instrument in the direction of the target and it will locate and lock on to the target. Or use the new Turn-To or defined distance functions when the instrument has lost lock. For Turn-To, just tap your position on the map and the instrument turns to that position. For defined distance, enter the horizontal or vertical distance you have moved since the last measurement. The instrument uses this distance together with the last measurement to the target to determine how far it should turn to find you. Continuous RTK surveying Continuous real-time kinematic (RTK) surveying is surveying on the fly surveying without stopping. You can plot a continuous line, even a topo map, simply by walking or driving over the terrain and recording points at time or distance increments you define. You can create up to two offsets, horizontal and vertical, with feature codes. RTK surveying is many times faster than conventional stop-and-go GPS you can pause and restart with one button push, without reinitializing. Job review The Review Job feature gives you a complete and detailed record of everything that happened in the field a real electronic field book! It also allows quick and easy data editing, such as changing an incorrect antenna height or feature code, and it records what changes were made and when. Changes are automatically applied to all affected points.

7 SURVEYING WITH THE TRIMBLE SURVEY CONTROLLER SOFTWARE Start the survey with GPS using the Survey Style. Determine the conventional total station position by setting up on a known point you have measured with GPS. TECH NOTES 7 Carry out an automatic calibration on known control points. Use your conventional instrument to do topographic work or collect features. Survey some features using GPS. Check the in-field map for any missed areas in the survey before leaving the site. Switch to a conventional total station to fill in some gaps without ending the job. Download directly to your Trimble office software for processing and analysis, or directly into Autodesk Land Desktop via Trimble Link software.

8 8 TECH NOTES STAKEOUT AND ROADING The Trimble Survey Controller software gives you unbeatable stakeout capabilities. The graphical stakeout screens and the active map get you to each point quickly and easily for all your construction and roading projects. Graphical stakeout You can stake out directly from the active map. Just double-tap on the point in the map; or single-tap and press the Stakeout button; or tap and hold on the point and select Stakeout from the drop-down list that appears. Other options include Review, Compute Inverse, Key in Line, Compute Area, Delete, and more. The powerful stakeout screen makes it fast and easy to stake out points, lines, arcs, slopes, roads, and surfaces with a total station. Use either the text on the right or the graphical display on the left to navigate to the point. The large arrows get you to the stakeout point with ease. previous elements. This is especially useful in a construction environment. For example, if you are staking out a point where the bulldozer needs to cut, offsetting the stake from the path of the dozer keeps it out of harm s way. Catch points Now you can find and stake the points where the design surface and the existing surface intersect much more easily and accurately. This can be done in the office using an existing design DTM in RoadLink, or you can do it on site in real-time. We even tell you where to go When doing conventional stakeout, pre-recorded sound messages tell you to Go Left, Go Right, Go In, or Go Out to help get you to the point easily. Stake point tells you you re there. And staking out with a robotic total station has never been easier! When the instrument has locked on to the target, the continuous stakeout tracking in the graphical screen updates your target position in real-time. You can now build stakeout lists from.csv files without importing the design points into the current job database only measured points that you store end up in the Job file, keeping the Job file smaller and more manageable. Construction offsets When staking out roads, lines or arcs, you have the capability to stake out an offset from your point. You can apply a horizontal offset or extend a grade from Report position on road/real-time quality control You can put the pole down anywhere on site and see an instantaneous grid position, station, offset and cut/fill report. This a great tool for checking stakes in record time and for making spot checks on points, grades, and earthworks progress. Custom road reports Record the as-staked position in the field for every point staked with the touch of a button. Just click on the field-staked-points icon in Trimble Geomatics Office software for instant, as-staked point properties. You can instantly generate quality control reports of as-staked positions, design positions, cut sheet reports, story boards and catch points all directly from the field data. Stake out 3D design surface Trimble Survey Controller software gives you the capability to load a TIN or gridded DTM file and stake out the cut/fill values.

9 STAKING OUT WITH THE TRIMBLE SURVEY CONTROLLER SOFTWARE Upload design data directly from your office software. Or use the comma separated file format to upload points to Survey Controller and build stakeout lists from.csv files Right on target! Hit Measure to record the as-staked position for a QC check TECH NOTES 9 On the map, select the point to stake out or automatically select the closest stakeout point from the stakeout list. Switch to a conventional total station and the large, clear graphical display shows which way to turn to the correct bearing. Just walk and follow the compass arrow to head for the point and see it respond in a fraction of a second when you change direction. Once the rod person is on line, simple graphical displays show how far to go forward or back and audio messages also tell you which way to go. See the screen switch to a cross and bullseye when the stakeout point is within a few feet or a couple of meters. Stake point! Check the as-staked point and move on to the next point, or line, arc, or road, or even stake out a DTM.

10 ROAD KEY-IN AND STAKEOUT Stake out the road definition Key in the road definition components Key in the horizontal alignment elements: lines, arcs and spirals. Select the road and the position to be staked out. 10 TECH NOTES Key in the vertical alignment elements: points, parabolas (symmetric and asymmetric) and circular arcs. Specify any horizontal and vertical construction offsets. The horizontal offset can be applied horizontally or at the slope of the previous element. Key in and assign the templates representing the cross-sections of the road. Navigate to the selected position using the graphical display. Measure and store the point. Finally, key in any superelevation and widening records and select the appropriate pivot position. For side slope staking, storyboard details can also be displayed providing additional information about the position of the catch point relative to elements defining the template. Select the next position and continue to stake out the road.

Real-time control points Now you can establish survey control using RTK surveying, invented by Trimble. Doing the work in real-time allows you to check your data in the field no more postprocessing back at the office before being able to check your data. You no longer need to create DC files in the office with your control points, all you need is your control points in a comma delimited file and associate this with your job. This means you can share these between crews and start with a fresh job every morning and still have easy access to your control or any other important points. You can survey in grid or ground, with the corresponding distances displayed. The Trimble Survey Controller software provides several ways of checking your data when doing real-time control, such as duplicate points tolerance checking. Resection The Trimble Survey Controller software uses a powerful leastsquares algorithm to calculate resections. You get the best answer in the field from combinations of angles and distance measurements to establish points. Calibration You can apply a calibration before staking out points or computing offset or intersection points. The solution adjusts the projected (grid) coordinates to fit the local control. And you re in complete control you can either key in a calibration or let the system calculate it for you.
