2 Why Study Games Design? Today we live in a world of technology and scientific advancement. We see new innovations every day and different industries have started taking advantage of the technologies of other industries. The games Design Industry used to be very small and it was only meant for entertainment of young kids. Today however, the world has changed. We see the number of gamers have rocketed, investment in the sector has greatly increased, and other industries are taking advantage of technologies that were once only used for the creation of video games. Industries such as advertisement, armies, health care, engineering and so many others have realized they can use the technologies used in the creation of video games in order to benefit their own industries. By studying Computer Games Design, you don t only open the doors for a career in this industry, but you will learn transferable skills which are highly sought after in hundreds of other industries. Based on government statistic, the creative industry alone (which Games Design is a big part of) contributes 10 million an hour to our economy! That s 87.1 billion a year! As it happens, the UK has the biggest Games Design industry in Europe, and 23 of the top 100 Games Design companies in the world are based right here in the UK! Statistics also show that 1 in every 11 jobs in the UK are in the Creative Industry! Government statistics show the Games Design Industry recruited 15,000 workers in 2012, 19,000 in 2013, and 24,000 in 2014! As the Games Design industry is continuously growing, the number of people being employed in this industry is also increasing! This course enables young students to stay on top of the industry and ensures you will always be two steps ahead of other individuals you will face at university, or the competitors you ll face in an important job interview. Now is the best time to plan your future.
3 The Games Design curriculum is divided in to 4 topics: Curriculum 1. Introduction to Modelling Techniques (Using 3Ds Max) (9 weeks) 2. Material Design & Texturing (Using Photoshop & 3Ds Max) (6 weeks) 3. Introduction to Animation (Using 3Ds Max) (6 weeks) 4. Introduction to Game Engine and Game Logics (Using Unreal Engine 4) (9 weeks)
4 Introduction to Modelling Techniques (9 Weeks) 3D modelling is one of the most essential areas of any 3D industry such as Games Design and it s the first technique you ll need to learn. By the completion of the 9 weeks for Introduction to Modelling techniques, you will be able to model most environmental objects such as furniture (e.g. chairs, desks & beds, basic buildings (e.g. houses), digital devices (e.g. phones & TVs) and much more! Creation of third 3D object (Digital objects TV & Monitors) b. Understanding modelling errors a. Understanding Pivot Points b. Snapping tools c. Grid System 6. Week 6. a. Using Splines b. Creating 3D Objects from 2D Objects c. Creation of forth 3D objects (Glass, cups & Mugs) 7. Week 7. a. Creation of fifth 3D model starts (choose your own object) b. Understanding how to import image references c. How to freeze objects d. Understanding Object Properties 8. Week 8. a. Working on chosen model b. Support Session 9. Week 9. a. Finalizing chosen model b. Support Session
5 Material Design & Texturing (6 Weeks) The objects you create will need to have the correct colours and looks. We refer to this as texturing. The following lesson plan will take you through the required training to teach you how to create materials and textures for the objects you ve created! Lesson Plan: a. Introduction to the material editor b. Understanding Material Types c. Applying Materials a. Importing external texture files b. Understanding UVW mapping a. Introduction to Photoshop b. Understanding Photoshop Interface c. Working with Layers d. Working with selection methods a. Removing objects from their backgrounds b. Creating text c. Applying effects a. Manipulating images b. Removing spots and dirt 6. Week 6. a. Creating and applying textures to 3D models b. Texturing using Opacity Maps
6 Introduction to Animation (6 Weeks) By completing the modelling and texturing lessons, you will then be ready to animate objects.
