2 INTEGRATED 1D AND 2D FLOOD MODELING WITH MIKE FLOOD Introduction Traditional flood modeling techniques typically involve 1D steady-state modeling for predicting base flood elevations across a distinct two-dimensional floodplain. While this approach is suitable in some situation, it does not represent the true spatial and temporal impacts of the flooding, nor does it capture the details or accuracy required by today s standards. MIKE FLOOD is a dynamically linked one-dimensional and two-dimensional flood modeling package. The tool is assembled from components taken from two of DHI s widely applied flood modeling software packages MIKE 11 and MIKE 21 - and enhanced with new features and productivity tools targeted specifically towards the modeling of floods. MIKE FLOOD effectively couples the computational efficiency of 1D river hydraulics modeling (MIKE 11) in the main river channel with the computational accuracy of 2D overland flow modeling (MIKE 21) in the floodplain. This approach produces a uniquely powerful system capable of providing detailed results where needed, without sacrificing the time to build and run the entire simulation in two dimensions. MIKE FLOOD also utilizes GIS for automated model development and flood mapping, making it easy to present results - perfectly suited for public dissemination. This course is designed for professionals and managers involved in floodplain management, mapping and flood hazard mitigation. Simulation of flooding requires good skills in numerical modeling and careful considerations about spatial and temporal scales, data availability and requirements, and assessment of reliability and accuracy in data and model results. This training course will provide you with the opportunity to gain a good understanding in the theory and application of 1D and 2D numerical models and enable you to carry out reliable and efficient flood modeling studies. Course content The course will cover the following topics: Day 1: 1D Modeling with MIKE 11 1-D Hydrodynamic Modeling data requirements, model set-up, calibration, and validation process trouble shooting and pitfalls in 1D hydraulic modeling solving practical problems with hydrodynamic modeling Hydrodynamic Modeling with MIKE 11 capabilities of the MIKE 11 modeling system graphical user interface solving practical problems with MIKE 11 special features, hydraulic structures etc presentation of simulation results Flood Modeling and Mapping using MIKE 11 GIS Basic ArcView commands and features Flood plain schematisation Generating and editing Digital Elevation Models Extraction of topographical data from a DEM Interfacing a MIKE 11 model with a DEM Generating of Flood Inundation, Comparison and Duration Maps Generating of 2- and 3-dimensional video animations 1

3 Day 2: 2D Modeling with MIKE 21 Introduction to 2D Surface Flow Modeling Introduction to MIKE 21 Project definition including selection of geographical co-ordinate system and bathymetry digitization Data organization, import, editing and quality control Graphical tools for 1-, 2-, and 3D presentations Result analysis and visualization, including video animation Day 3: Combined 1D and 2D Modeling using MIKE FLOOD Introduction to Multi-Dimensional Modeling Overview of Coupling Methods, Tools and Calculations Topographical Data for 2D Areas Pitfalls, Difficulties and Trouble-Shooting Result presentation (viewing, animating, GIS integration) Detailed walk-through of MIKE FLOOD model examples Who should attend? The course is designed for professionals with some understanding and experience in traditional flood modeling and mapping technologies, and who wish to: 1. obtain detailed knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of combined 1D and 2D flood modeling 2. augment their present skills and modeling capabilities within 1D modeling with a true 2D flow component. 3. model fine scale structures within 2D models without having to resort to high resolution spatial grid scales. Participants are expected to be acquainted with hydrodynamic modeling (either 1D and or 2D) in general and to have a background in applied hydrology and hydraulics or similar. Course structure: The course combines lectures and hands-on exercises (i.e. working at computers with practical applications) and encourages dialogue and interaction amongst the participants. Lectures are illustrated by case studies and real-world applications. What's included? 1. Use of a computer provided at the training facility. 2. Use of the MIKE FLOOD modeling system for the duration of the course. 3. Latest DHI Software Demo Version and other products from the DHI Software family. 4. Training materials and exercises in a binder days evaluation license of MIKE FLOOD. 6. Refreshments during the three training days. Upon completion of the course each participant will receive a Certificate of Training indicating they are eligible for 1.6 CEU credits.
