2 INTI INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY DIPLOMA IN CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAMME EGC2170 : SURVEYING 2 FINAL EXAMINATION : AUGUST 2013 SESSION EGC 2170 (F) / Page 1 of 4 Instructions: This paper consists of SIX (6) questions. Answer any FOUR (4) questions in the answer booklet provided. All questions carry equal marks. Question 1 The following data were collected while running a closed traverse ABCDA. Calculate the missing data. (25 marks) Question 2 (a) With the help of sketches, explain the following types of traverse : (i) Link traverse. (ii) Polygonal traverse. (iii) Free (open) traverse. (9 marks) In a triangulation survey, the altitudes of two stations A and B, 110 km apart, are respectively 440 m and 725 m. The elevation of a peak P situated between A and B at 65 km from A is 410 m. Ascertain if A and B are intervisible, and if necessary, find by how much B should be raised so that the line of sight would nowhere be less than 3 m above the surface of ground. Take earth s mean radius as 6400 km and the mean coefficient of refraction as (16 marks)

3 EGC 2170 (F) / Page 2 of 4 Question 3 The following notes refer to a 1200-m section of a proposed railway, and the earthwork distribution in this section is to be planned without regard to the adjoining sections. The table below shows the stations and the surface levels along the centre-line, the formation level being at an elevation above datum of 43.5 m at chainage 70 and thence rising uniformly on a gradient of 1.2%. The volumes are recorded in m3, the cuts are plus and fills minus. (a) Plot the longitudinal section using a horizontal scale of 1 : 1200 and a vertical scale of 1 : 240. (6 marks) Assuming a correction factor of 0.8 applicable to fills, plot the MHD to a vertical scale of 1000 m3 to 20 mm (8 marks) (c) Calculate total haul in stn m and indicate the haul limits on the curve and section. (d) State which of the following estimates you would recommend: (4 marks) (7 marks) (i) No freehaul at RM 35 per m3 for excavating hauling and filling, (ii) A freehaul distance of 300 m at RM 30 per m3 plus RM 2 per stn m for overhaul. Question 4 (a) A 100-m length of earthwork for a proposed road has a constant crosssection of cut and fill, in which the cut area equals the fill area. The level formation is 30 m wide, transverse ground slope is 20 and the side slopes in cut-and-fill are 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical and 1 horizontal to 1 vertical, respectively. Calculate the volume of excavation in the 100-m length. (10 marks)

4 EGC 2170 (F) / Page 3 of 4 A tract of land has three straight boundaries AB, BC, and CD. The fourth boundary DA is irregular. The measured lengths are as : AB = 135 m, BC = 191 m, CD = 126 m, BD = 255 m. The offsets measured outside the boundary DA to the irregular boundary at a regular interval of 30 m from D, are as figure below: Determine the area of the tract. (15 marks) Figure Q4 Question 5 (a) A compound curve AB, BC is to be replaced by a single arc with transition curves 100 m long at each end. The chord lengths AB and BC are respectively and m and radii 1200 m and 1500 m. Calculate the single arc radius: (i) If A is used as the first tangent point. (ii) If C is used as the last tangent point. (13 marks) A falling gradient of 4% meets a rising gradient of 5% at chainage 2450 m and level m. At chainage 2350 m the underside of a bridge has a level of m. The two grades are to be joined by a vertical parabolic curve giving 14 m clearance under the bridge. List the levels at 50-m intervals along the curve. (12 marks) Question 6 (a) For setting out a rectangular platform ABCD, a rotating construction laser was used. It gave a reading of m on a temporary B.M., having a level m. The platform has a cross fall of 1 in 1000 longitudinally and 1 in 250 transversely. If the platform is 8 m longitudinally, i.e., along AD or BC, and 40 m transversely, i.e., along AB or DC, determine the offsets from the laser beam to the comers of the platform. The lowest comer A has a level m. (13 marks)

5 EGC 2170 (F) / Page 4 of 4 Two vertical wires A and B hang in a shaft, the bearing of AB being 55 o (See Figure). A theodolite at C, to the right of the line AB produced, measured the angle ACB as The distances AC and BC were m and m respectively. Calculate the perpendicular distance from C to AB produced, the bearing of CA and the angle to set off from BC to establish CP parallel to AB produced. Describe how you would transfer a line AB above ground to the bottom of a shaft. (12 marks) Figure Q6 - THE END - EGC2170/(F)/August 2013 / Md Munir Hayet Khan/200913
