5 PRINCIPLES OF BALANCING Definition of Balancing Causes of Unbalance Unbalance is caused by the displacement of the mass centreline, from a rotating components axis by an eccentricity in the distribution of the objects mass Reasons for Balancing The vibrations produced by rotating parts that are not balanced will cause one or more of the following effects: MEC 109 Balancing, Levelling and Alignment 8
6 Typical Components to be balanced Static Balancing STATIC BALANCING The condition of unbalance of a rotating body may be classified as or unbalance. Static balancing involves installing the component onto a balancing machine and measuring the heavy point in relation to the centreline, while the part is rotating. The procedure involves setting up the rotor so that it can rotate freely and settle in its equilibrium position, usually on a set of knifeedges. Single Plane Balancing (Static) If the required balance correction is at a single axial plane on the rotor the balance is said to be Single plane. Single plane balancing is adequate for rotors that are short in length, such as. MEC 109 Balancing, Levelling and Alignment 9
7 Courtesy: Test Devices.com Dynamic Balancing DYNAMIC BALANCING Dynamic unbalance results when two weights in separate planes set-up separate forces that cause a shaft to rock and twist on its axis, perpendicular to the centreline of rotation. Dynamic balancing is required for components such as Dual Plane Balancing (Dynamic) Dynamic or Dual Plane is required for assemblies of length. These components may have heavy points at opposing ends, acting independently on the mass centreline. In order to balance the component, both planes must be corrected for centreline error. Courtesy: Test Devices.com MEC 109 Balancing, Levelling and Alignment 10
8 BALANCING CONCEPTS The balancing process is not complete until corrections have been made at the exact location indicated by the balancing machine. Correction for balance may be made by Methods of Measuring Unbalance (Balancing machines) Unbalance may be measured by either With Static balancing the body being balanced is not continuously rotated. In dynamic balancing the body is. Static Balancing machines generally consist of a spindle adapted to carry the body to be balanced and mounted so as the axis is held horizontally. This spindle is then suspended on a set of or. The heavy area of the component will then settle into equilibrium and adjustments are then made so as the component will settle in any position.
