5 LICENCE MANAGEMENT (VLSC) AUDITS As a registered lizengo client, you will automatically get access to your own licence management account where you can download your software and view your product keys. You also have access to your licensing information at your fingertips. You can view your company s contracts and purchases and download a summary of your purchased licences by product and version. With the option of setting up your own projects, the licence management can be optimally adapted to meet your needs. You can export your data in various file formats and manage it offline. You can thus manage your previous and current licence purchases in a clear, uniform manner. Licence management is free of charge, regardless of whether you buy your software from us or not. Audits are manufacturer investigations into a company s software licences, checking whether you are using the software as agreed and whether you have sublicensed it. For companies, this can be a lot of work that can take days to complete. You are not legally obligated to take part in an audit, but if your licensing is in proper order, you have nothing to fear. Once the first audit is done, you ll probably be of less interest for future ones, since these only pay off for the manufacturers when they catch companies not buying enough licences for their work stations. This can result in fines and additional fees. We make sure your licences are technically and legally correct from the get-go so that the manufacturers won t charge our clients any penalties. We would be glad to provide support should you be audited and can even handle the correspondence with the manufacturer, if you like. 6 VOLUME LICENSING MAK / KMS COMPARISON Buying product keys in bulk is a good deal for companies because they can simplify installation and licence management significantly. With a volume licence, only a single product key is needed to activate the software on multiple devices. Microsoft s volume activation services are called MAK (Multiple Activation Key) and KMS (Key Management Service). When using MAK, the software is instantly activated via a Microsoft activation server. This process takes place online and only needs to be done one time for each device. Alternatively, an activation proxy can be used to collect the relevant activation information and bundle them for all of the devices. Each MAK has a max. number of activations associated with it. Once this volume has been used, no further activations under that MAK are possible. You should also know that MAK can be used with any number of systems. If you use KMS, the activation is done via your own network. Only the KMS server has to connect to Microsoft s server. The individual devices are activated automatically within the network. To ensure correct licensing, the corresponding number of MAKs need to be purchased. These serve as proof of licensing for the volume used. 7 SERVERS SERVER CALs Depending on the application or company size, different server systems might be used. lizengo offers the right software for every application. Especially for Windows Servers, there are a variety of licensing options that can quickly become confusing. Here are the basic differences among the different Microsoft server licences: CALs (Client Access Licenses) A distinction is made between user and device CALs. A user CAL allows an employee to work on multiple devices and access the associated Windows Server. 1. Processor-based licence model: the server software is licenced for each processor. For up to and including the Windows Server 2012 R2 version, the standard and data centre licence applies to two physical processors each. 2. Core-based licence model: in this licence model, the number of physical processor cores in the server is decisive. A server has to be licensed with at least 16 cores and a processor with at least 8 cores. With a device CAL, access is limited to a single device, but multiple users can access the Windows Server software on it. This is especially useful if several employees share a single computer, for example, in shift work. With Windows Server 2016 Standard/DataCenter (16 Core) software, a server can be licensed with a 16-core processor or as a server with two 8-core processors. For servers with more cores, multiple licences need to be acquired in the form of core add-ons or by switching to the next-biggest software package, e.g. Windows Server 2016 Standard/Data- Center (24 Core). In addition, you need to buy the correct number of user or device CALs to ensure your system is properly licensed
