4 Research & evaluate before you act Before you make a service provider or scan tool purchase decision, determine what you need and why based on your work mix and shop personnel skill sets. Review current shop work mix by year make and model of vehicles serviced Review your own shop data going back at least 6 months, assign a percentage to each manufacturer line and model years you are certified for or specialize in Decide how far you will go. Diagnostics? Calibrations? Programming? Just Pre-and Post- scanning? OEM Scan Tools? Aftermarket? Both? Review your current SOPs to integrate scan procedures into your operation

5 Service Information Service information is a critical part of determining required scan tool functions and calibration procedures. Review your service information access and needs, update or procure as needed o OE Service options o Non-OE solutions; Alldata, Mitchell, IdentiFix, etc. o Hotline support options o

6 Review and assess your shops IT infrastructure Have your shops current IT (Internet and Wi- Fi) infrastructure evaluated. Using scan tools and/or services will require a professional IT infrastructure with Wi-Fi and/or cabled access for a scan tool or service to download OEM files, scan tool updates, or for remote services. This evaluation should be done periodically for all functions your shop relies on relating to IT. You can perform some preliminary test by using from a tablet or smart phone. If your download and upload speeds are slow you will have to identify the bottlenecks and make corrections for your shops IT functions and scan-tool updates or remote services to operate smoothly.

10 SOP considerations for when/why a diagnostic or calibration procedure is needed Determine what issues exist before repairs are started so they can be discussed and documented Vehicles that have extensive electronic systems When electronic systems may be damaged or have set codes When systems, control modules or sensors need to be recalibrated following specific repairs To verify safety systems are working correctly before delivery When codes need to be cleared

13 Understanding The Data Can codes just be cleared? The person reading the information must be capable of interpreting what it means Pre-existing loss related repair related - irrelevant It may require more research to determine what the codes indicate regarding the condition of the system being checked It may be necessary to do additional checks or tests to verify the condition of an electronic system It may be necessary to reference OEM service information in conjunction with using the tool to evaluate an electronic system

14 Systems, Control Modules or Sensors need to be recalibrated following specific repairs A scan tool does not know if a vehicle has been re-aligned, a seat removed, a tail gate replaced, or sensor disturbed. It is service information that will alert you to what calibrations need to be performed and conditions to perform these calibrations with a scan tool. Make sure you review service information do the required calibrations. If subletting these functions, alert your service provider to all physical procedures that were done to a vehicle.
