3 General Application The programming unit 631 is used for compilin and testing STEP-5 user-programs for the SIMATIC-S5 programmable controllers , -1lOA and -130 A/K. The PU 631 permits programs to be written in either statement list (STL) or ladder diagram (LAD) formats of representation. Using a printer, the statement list, the ladder diagram and the cross reference list may be printed out. The built-in EPROM-programming unit enables programs to be stored on EPROM-modules. 10 Connections The mains connection and the mains switch are located at the rear of the unit. The connection to the PC, the printer connection and the receptacle for the EPROM-module are located on top of the PU 631 under a cover. Heceptacle for EPROM-module PC-interface Printer connection

11 Principle of operation The PU 631 is equipped with a program memory (PU-memory) with a capacity of 4K statements. The built-in backup battery retains the program for a period of 30 minutes after the PU has been switched' off. In the on-line mode of operation a PC S5-130 may work either with its own EPROM-memory or with the PU-memory. The PC ~5-110~/ 010 can only work with the PU-memory in the on-line mode. To prevent malfunctions of the controller during on-line operation (PC with PU-memory) only complete networks (or basic software modules in the case of STL) may be transferred to the PU-memory during program inputting or alteration. This is achieved in the PU 631 with an intermediate buffer storage. A network element or statement which was inputted, appears initially in the input field of the screen. After depressing keys or, the statement is transferred to the intermediate buffer. After a completed input or alteration of a network, the contents of the intermediate. buffer must be transferred to the PU-memory by pressing key. Note: During off-line operation the transfer from the intermediate buffer to the PU-memory is done automatically as soon as the intermediate buffer is full. Hence key m needs only to be depressed at the end of program inputting. Siemens Distributor

12 Putting into operation Connect mains cable and check mains voltage. Important: Keep ventilation slots free! Switch mains switch to position I. \ Display: State of execution of PU631 systemsoftware. Message **9 (backup-timeexceeded) if unit was switched-off for more than 1/2 hour.
