Metric Prefixes 1
Basic Ideas Needed for Converting Metric Prefixes 1. Which value is bigger, one dime or one dollar? 2. How many dimes are in one dollar? 3. What fraction of a dollar would give you one dime? 2
4. If a number does not have a decimal point, where would you place the decimal point? Example: List the place values for the following number: : thousands 2: hundreds 3: tens 4: ones 5: tenths 6: hundredths 7: thousandths 6. The decimal point should always be behind the wanted prefix when you are determining how many places it should be moved. 3
Converting Metric Prefixes by moving the decimal point Step 1: Write out the abbreviations for the metric prefixes. Example: Convert 75 hectograms to decigrams k h da u d c m Step 2: Circle the two prefixes involved in the conversion. k h da u d c m Step 3: Write the down the prefixes that are being converted. hecto to deci Step 4: Count the number of places you need to move to get from the original prefix to the wanted prefix and record the number of places and the direction you need to move the decimal place k h da u d c m 3 places to the right Step 5: Use the given number and move the decimal place the same amount of places written in step 4. Fill in necessary zeros and record your answer So, 75 hectograms = decigrams 4
Fill in necessary zeros and record your answer So, 75 hectograms = decigrams 5
Quick Check: Ask yourself is 1 hectogram larger or smaller than 1 decigram? 1 hectogram is > 1 decigram When the wanted prefix is smaller than the given prefix, your final number should be a bigger number because you need more of the smaller unit to equal the larger unit. Example: is bigger number than 75 But, decigrams = 75 hectograms Remember, the value of the measurements are equal. 6
Class Practice: Use the 5 step method to convert milliliters to kiloliters. k h da u d c m milli to kilo 6 places to the left So, milliliters = kiloliters 7
Quick Check: Ask yourself is 1 milliliter larger or smaller than 1 kiloliter? 1 milliliter is < 1 kiloliter When the wanted prefix is larger than the given prefix, your final number should be a smaller number because you need less of the larger unit to equal the smaller unit. Example: is a smaller number than But, kiloliters = milliliters Remember, the value of the measurements are equal. 8
