2 About Superfast Essex One of 44 BDUK projects in the UK national programme run by DCMS Using public subsidy to accelerate superfast broadband deployment Working with Openreach and Gigaclear to rollout fibre Essex programme began in 2012/13 so far 100,000 homes & businesses reached Objective is to reach 99% with superfast by 2021 Not a statutory responsibility; but ECC & districts made investment in broadband a priority 80million invested so far Check your broadband status at: Aim to help economic growth and improve quality of life for residents

3 Gigaclear in Uttlesford Uttlesford District was set to be one of the poorest served districts for superfast broadband after Phase 2a Gigaclear s network build will help bring this in line with elsewhere in Essex Uttlesford District Council funding helped secure additional coverage Contract signed by Essex County Council and Gigaclear in June 2017 One of 4 contracts which make up Phase 3 across Essex Superfast Essex Phase 3 Lot 1: Uttlesford District Total investment of 6.8million (including 1.7million public funds) 4,600 homes and businesses to receive full fibre broadband (ultrafast speeds of 50Mbps to 1000Mbps, or 1Gbps) Work to complete by December 2019

14 Civils Works: Phase 1 Trenches are dug to install fibre cables at least 250mm below footways and at least 500mm below carriageways A thin layer of sand is introduced for protection and then a small identification tape is installed above the cables Ultrafast Broadband for Essex 14

15 Civils Works Phase 2: Reinstatement The trench is backfilled, compacted and left to settle or be filled with temporary materials while the trench progresses. Temporary ground repair is required to ensure public safety and protect the installation. Workers will return to complete the permanent reinstatement of the surface. This will match the original surface finish as closely as possible,normally complete within one month of the initial work starting Ultrafast Broadband for Essex 15

16 Civils Works: Verges & Unofficial Roads We will try to reinstate all soft verges and unofficial roads as closely as possible back to the state they were originally in prior to our works Inspectors visit each area both prior, and after our contractors have completed their works to assess the level of workmanship and to confirm that the reinstatement has been completed to the requirements of the relevant Essex Highways specification Ultrafast Broadband for Essex 16
