2 What s driving the DCMS programme? Industry evolving UK Digital opportunity Improving coverage 85% of premises now have mobile data coverage indoors, up from 80% in 2016 Ministerial drive Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport: The Programme will stimulate Trials from many different future 5G users, learning lessons and driving productivity and fund projects that address deployment and technical challenges.

3 Key Ministerial Announcements Autumn Statement 2016 Government announced its 5G plans as part of a 1 billion package to boost the UK s digital infrastructure. Spring Budget 2017 Government released its 5G strategy. Programme s initial investment announced 16m for leading UK research institutions to cooperate on a new 5G capability. September million for Phase 1 competition funding during 2018/19 Autumn Budget 2017 Industrial Strategy 2017 A further 160 million for the next phase of funding to test 5G applications and deployment on roads and security of 5G networks plus a major project on the Trans Pennine rail route. Government committed to ensure the UK has the digital infrastructure it needs to facilitate 5G. The Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review was announced. This will explore policy and regulatory interventions for the UK to reach its long-term objectives of 5G coverage.
