2 The Eye Vs. The Camera LESSON FOUR
3 What you will learn: The differences and similarities between how our eyes and a camera captures an image. Understanding the terms used when explaining the eye or the camera. Understanding why cameras and the eye have different external lens options. Learning about the most common lenses and their uses
4 What you should be able to do: Demonstrate your understanding of how the eye and a camera capture an image. Demonstrate your understanding of lenses and the differences between them Take photographs with different lenses to create different effects in the final image.
5 How our eyes capture light We Learned The eye works by taking in light through the lens, which then focuses on the retina in the back of the eye, this information is sent through the optic nerve to the brain where it is translated into an image. The brain makes adjustments for the image it receives such as removing some colour and adjusting to light changes. Meaning the image has been manipulated so is not always what is truly there.
6 How cameras capture an image Light bounces off the subject and into the camera, this passes through the camera s lens. This light then hits the sensor where the image is recorded and sent to the processor to be converted into an image. This process means that the image captured is true to the reality as it is not been manipulated in the same way an eye does.
7 Technical Terms Retina the point in the back of the eye where the image is foccussed. Sensor a small card in a camera where the image is focussed. Optic nerve a nerve that runs from the back of the eye to the brain, where the information of the image is sent. Processor the part of the camera that translates the light into an image. Lens both cameras and eyes have lenses, these are clear and allow the image to pass through it and onto the sensor or retina.
8 How Camera lenses work A camera lens is a piece of glass that allows light (and therefore) the image to pass through it and into the camera. The image can be changed by changing the shape, size and curve of the glass. Zoom lenses are adjustable and allow the photographer to extend the lens to be closer to the subject of the photo. Macro lenses allow the photographer to get closer to the subject than you could with a normal lens.
9 How Camera lenses work
10 Lenses for our eyes. The human eye has a built in lens but sometimes it needs a little help. Glasses are used to help people see closer or further away than their eyes will allow them Binoculars and telescopes allow people to see much further away than our eyes can normally see. Contact lenses allow the wearer to adjust and fix problems with their sight.
11 Common types of lenses Zoom lens - similar to binoculars, they take photos of things that are really far away. Fish-eye lens creates a domed image because of it s curved glass.
12 Common types of lenses Macro lens allows the user to take photos of objects really close-up, showing up detail that might have been missed. Wide angle allows the user to capture a really wide area in one photo.
13 Activity Using the different lenses available, see what interesting photos you can create. Think about how your eye sees the subject of your photo and how the camera with a different lens has seen it.
14 Uses for different lenses Zoom lens used by plastic surgeons to take a range of photos of their patient Macro lens used in medicine to see tiny details on the body. Wide angle used in opticians to see details on a retina Fish eye used in CCTV as it has a view of 180 degrees.
15 So what have we learned? We learned the differences and similarities between how our eyes and a camera captures an image. We now understand the terms used when explaining the eye or the camera. We now understand why cameras and the eye have different external lens options. We learned about the most common lenses and their uses.
