A Fun Wildlife Learning Experience Level 1-15 Subject Photos General Description Players: The number of players is based on the number of cameras and amount of time available. Game Duration: ~90 minutes with ability to offer hunts every 2 hours. This can vary with modification from just a few minutes to as long as desired. Rules of Play: Guide/Host/Leader will select scavenger hunt list and skill level. Skill level is based on knowledge of both wildlife and of the use of the digital cameras. The program will start with a short description of the game, its duration and the geographical limits in which players will be allowed to hunt/play. The leader will give brief instructions on how to use the camera before checking out the cameras using a sign out system to ensure return and care of cameras. After each team has received a camera each team member will take a photograph of another team member and then view the photo on the camera. This is to ensure that players can successfully operate the camera. The players will then be given a time limit for the hunt. Typically Level 1 would be 30 minutes of hunting time. Battery life for the 2 AA batteries is very short and will generally only last for one hunt plus viewing time. Use rechargeable batteries if you can. After the hunt the teams will return the cameras to the leader for viewing/scoring of photos. Depending on your group you will want to sign out the numbered cameras to ensure return. The scoring may be done as a group or alone by the leader. Group scoring will take much more time but may have benefits, especially if the group will have the chance to do more than one hunt on the same day. If possible use identical cameras set at the same quality level. This is not required. The quality of camera ie resolution need not be more than 1-2 Megapixel and the camera does not need zoom. For this program very simple to use, inexpensive cameras are desired. Higher levels and variations can use guest cameras, to high quality Digital SLR with Supertelefoto lenses. Viewing can be accomplished by TV, LCD Projector, or Computer/Laptop. Viewing directly from the camera is faster than downloading to a computer. To view directly, the cameras will need a video out capability and cable that can connect directly to an RCA type jack on the TV or projector/computer.

2 Digital Photo Safari Program Miles Phillips If you plan to utilize the photos for placing on the Web, printing etc then it may be easiest to go ahead and download them onto the computer right away. Example Camera Vivitar 3805 Digital Camera Camera will take ~92 photos at <1 MegaPixel (1 Star* Setting on Camera) Camera will take ~32 photos at 2 MegaPixel (2 Star* Setting on Camera) Camera will take ~16 photos at 3 MegaPixel (3 Star* Setting on Camera) Camera will take ~10 photos at 4 MegaPixel (4 Star* Setting on Camera) SCORING Competition is one way of adding excitement and getting more committed play. It can also help with word of mouth advertising by guests. Scoring the photographs however is not always required. You may simply have everyone view the photographs as a group simply for the enjoyment of seeing how they did. You may also have each team pick one good photo/their favorite photograph to submit to the host. This image can then be posted to a web site later or printed out for them if any printing is to be done. This takes much more equipment & time commitment from the host. Generally friendly competition with recognition of achievement will generate most interest. Two basic scoring methods 1) Score every photograph 2) Have each team review their photographs on the camera and submit a selected number of photographs for scoring by simply listing/circling the selected photo number on the hunt list form. Option 1 Each team will select 2 photos for entry into contest. The leader will score all photos, if selection of the top 3 is not possible based on initial points, the leader can award bonus points to break the tie. The leader could also reshow the tied images for the group to vote by hand. The top 3 winning photos can be awarded a prize/recognition. Each photo is scored 1-6 points, Photo must be of subject on Target List Quality Image- 1-5 points Good - =5pts Low - =1pt Creative/Difficult Topic etc =1pt

3 Digital Photo Safari Program Miles Phillips Awards: $ You may simply recognize the group verbally or these photos can be placed on a web site. $ You can a copy of the photo to the winner. $ You can print each photo for the winners. $ You can make into epostcards which the winners can send to friends from your web site. $ OR You can create another award system, potentially with entry fees. Winners can be given award APostcard@ and be listed on AWinners Board@ The target list of photos can and usually should be customized to the location or event however the list provided below is sufficiently generic that it should be usable at almost any location. There are additional levels to this activity including species specific Ahunts@ PRICING: The intention for this program is that is may be used by clubs, nature centers, private ranchers or tour operators as a revenue generating activity. The host organization would need to purchase their own equipment but could use the program developed by extension with acknowledgment of it being an extension product. An Example pricing system is described below. Potential Pricing System: Anticipated market price: ~$7.50 ie similar to movie Proposed price structure to test $7.50 Price with all equipment provided and no pictures provided *1 Any user could utilize their own camera with understanding that the downloading/viewing of photos may not be possible due to technology issues $9.50 Price with all equipment provided and 1 picture (by user choice) ed $14.50 Price with all equipment provided *1 and 1 picture (by user choice) ed, and same photo printed on 4x6 photo paper $20.00 Price with all equipment provided and all pictures (by user choice) ed, and favorite photo printed on 4x6 photo paper. $5 Package of 6 postcards using user photo If the Ateam@ consists of more than one person each additional person pays $2.50 Ie 2 person team is $10.00, 3 person team is $12.50 etc
