Daytime Long Exposures 1. Make sure you have the right equipment: DLSR Camera memory Card ND filter (neutral density)-make sure it will screw onto the front of your lens tripod camera shoe that fits your tripod cable release that fits your camera 2. Walk about and look for the best non-moving focal point with moving surroundings (clouds, people walking or such). 3. Set the camera up on a tripod, and connect the cable release (See picture). Ensure that camera doesn t shake at all. 4. Set the camera to ISO 100. (Don t put the filter on yet.) 5. Select Shutter Priority <Tv>. 6. Adjust the camera on the tripod to get the framing that you desire. 7. Focus on your focal point. 8. Now you need to decide what shutter speed you would like the final photo to have: Picking an exposure time: Please keep in mind that this is a (very) rough guide. You will have to do some testing and check your results given each unique shooting situation: 5-15 seconds: blur traffic movement, but keep it fairly visible still 1 minute: fast moving clouds begin to blur, so does water if present in your composition 5-10 minutes: Blur most moving traffic, so that it can hardly be seen anymore. Water loses its texture. 1 hour+: Blur moving traffic so that it cannot be identified anymore page 1 of 12

9. Now look at the below chart: 10. The blue columns are the most accurate when it comes to the variable filters we have, so in the beginning, find your desired shutter speed in one of the blue columns. Example: I want to blur medium speed moving clouds, so I want a shutter speed of about 4 minutes or 240 seconds. (256 is pretty close.) In the blue column, 256 seconds is 1 second of non-filter shutter speed and the filter is dialed to Max. 11. With your camera in Shutter Priority <Tv>, dial up 1 second and see what your F-Stop is. 12. Switch your camera to Manual Shooting Mode <M> and dial up the F-Stop from step Dial your shutter speed all the way down to bulb. 14. Screw the ND filter onto the end of your lens and dial up the amount of filter you want. (Min to Max) NOTE: The dots do NOT mean F-Stops! (Light works as an exponential function. Not linear.) page 2 of 12

15. Switch the lens to MF or Manual Focus. Be careful not to bump the focus ring. 16. Click the cable release. You can lock it in, by sliding it upward. 17. Release the cable release after your desired exposure time. (The one in the blue column.) Remember that the same composition may look rather different at various exposure times. I would strongly suggest to bracket (try slower and faster settings) your exposure to give you maximum choice when selecting your final composition and look of your photograph. It s hard to judge the impact of your image when looking at your camera s rear monitor alone Adapted from Marc Koegel s Bulb Exposure Tutorial ( Taken from my experience using the Tiffen Variable ND Filter (your results may vary) : Minimum = 2 Stops 3.5 dots = 3 stops 5 dots = = 4 Stops 7.5 dots = 5 Stops 7.75 = 7 Stops Maximum = 8 Stops In case you have other types ND Filters: page 3 of 12

There is a really good app for iphone called NDTimer to help you. Here are some examples to give you an idea of the times you might want. Buildings with streaked sky-318 Seconds, F 18, ISO 100 page 4 of 12

Quick Look 1. Set up camera on tripod, Cable release -Don t put Filter on yet 2. Decide on desired shutter speed for whatever effect you want. 3. From the chart, find the desired shutter speed and pick: a. the non-filter Shutter speed to dial up on the camera b. setting on the ND filter (Min or Max) 4. On the camera, select your ISO. 5. In Tv mode, dial up the non-filter shutter speed to see what your F-Stop should be. 6. Switch to Manual mode and dial up your F-Stop from step Dial up bulb as your shutter speed. 8. Focus on your focal point. 9. Put the filter on and dial up the setting you want (Min or Max) (pink line in chart). 10. Switch the lens to Manual Focus. 11. Take the picture with the cable release for the desired shutter speed. page 12 of 12
