1 FTM 131 CANON EOS C100 WALKTHROUGH, PART I: 10 Steps to Record a Moving Image Step 1: TRIPOD - Perform the following steps on your tripod, before you place the camera on it: - Extend the legs to set the tripod at a comfortable height - Lock everything: the pan, tilt and sliding baseplate - Level the head, using the built-in level - Take the C100 camera out of the camera case Note: the camera has a semi-permanent cage attached: Cage Camera - Remove the baseplate from the tripod head and screw in to the bottom of the camera cage - Attach the camera to the tripod Step 2: BATTERY - Check the charge of the battery: Press here to check battery % charge - Find the battery port at the back of camera. Push IN, then LEFT (in direction of arrow): Battery port (empty) Push in and left here Ensure arrow on battery is pointing left

2 Step 3: SD CARD - SD CARD PART I - Insert the SD Card - Know your way around a SD card: Lock protects card from overwrites Card speed (Class 10+ required) Insert into C100 face up, this direction SD Card size: more GB = more shooting - Flip up the SD Card Tray, insert the SD Card into Slot A (or B), close tray: Flip tray up here Insert SD card into Slot A - SD CARD PART II- Format the SD Card - Turn camera power switch from OFF to MEDIA:

3 - Flip out the LCD screen: - Hit the MENU button on the back of the camera and find the navigation joystick: Menu button Navigation joystick - Use the joystick and navigate the menu to: OTHER FUNCTIONS > INITIALIZE CARD > SLOT A (OR B) > COMPLETE > OK > OK This will delete all the footage currently taking up space on your SD Card. - Move the camera power switch to OFF

4 Step 4: LENS - Remove the camera port cap. Keep a hand over the opening until you insert the lens, in order to protect the camera sensor: Rotate port cap counter-clockwise COVER SENSOR WITH HAND! - Turning to your lens, remove the rear lens cap (do not to touch the lens rear element): Rotate lens cap counter-clockwise Do not touch rear element! Rear lens cap - Line up the red dots on camera body and on the rear of the lens. Rotate clockwise until you hear a click. Rock the lens to ensure it is locked on securely. Remove lens cap. Line up red dots Pinch in

5 Step 5: MENU SETTINGS - Turn the camera power switch to CAMERA: - Press the MENU button and use the joystick to navigate to CAMERA SETUP - Set all settings for ISO/ GAIN, IRIS, SHUTTER, as below: - Use the CANCEL BUTTON, or reverse arrow to leave the camera setup menu:

6 - Navigate to LCD/VF SETUP and set MARKER to ENABLE > OFF, as below: - Navigate to TC/UB SETUP and setup/ reset TIMECODE > SETTING, as below: - Navigate to OTHER FUNCTIONS, set BITRATE, FRAME RATE, PRE REC, as below: - Press the MENU button to exit the on screen menus

7 Step 6: CAMERA SETTINGS - Ensure the ND FILTERS are off: No ND should be listed on the LCD Turn ND Filter dial to set ND to none - Press button #13 ISO. This highlights ISO on the LCD. Using the joystick, set to 850: - Press button #14 SHUTTER. This highlights shutter on the LCD. Set to 1/48: - Press CUSTOM PICTURE button:

8 - Under CP menu, press SET and navigate to CAMERA > C8: WIDE DR - Click the WB button. This will highlight the White Balance icon on your LCD: This icon may be a different symbol, or the letter A, or B - To manually set your color temperature, Use the joystick to change the WB icon to K. Then, press right on the joystick to highlight the numbers and set the sensor s Kelvin temperature (typically either 3200 K for int., or 5600 K for ext.) - To set a custom white balance, fill your frame with a white card/ surface, lit under the same conditions of your scene. Press and hold this button: The A, or B icon will blink while white balance is in progress. Once WB complete, it should look like this

9 Step 7: APERTURE - Adjust the aperture ring to desired F-stop/ T-stop: Rotate aperture ring toward T22 to close the aperture and let less light into the camera (brighter scenarios/ exteriors) Aperture ring This line indicates current aperture (here T5.6) Rotate aperture ring toward T1.5 to open the aperture and let more light into the camera (darker scenarios/ interiors) - If you re shooting outside, and a T-stop of T22 (nearly closed aperture) is still over exposed, use the built-in ND Filter (ND3 less filtration, ND9 most filtration): Amount of ND will be listed on the LCD screen Turn ND Filter +/- dial to set ND

10 Step 8: FOCUS - Adjust the focus ring to the distance of your subject: The orange numbers show the focus distance in feet (ft) The white line marks the current focus distance (for example, 2.5 ft. here) Focus ring - To focus by eye, use the MAGNIFICATION feature to digitally zoom into the image and check the sharpness of the subject. MAGN. buttons are located in two places: Step 9: REHEARSE - Always rehearse the action of your scene before you record! This will help you practice camera movements, as well as catch any focus/ exposure issues before it counts. - Clean entrances and exits! In most cases, start recording with a clean frame and have your actor/ subject enter, then let them exit the frame. Again, gives you options in post.

11 Step 10: RECORD AND REVIEW - Press the record button! There are two, one on the hand grip, one below the lens: - How to read the top of the LCD: Selected SD card slots (in green) Approx. amount of battery left (in min.) Approx. amount of shooting time left (in min.) STBY = standby REC = recording Timecode is read in: HRS:MIN:SEC:FRAMES Make sure this is running after you hit record!!! - Always record heads and tails (at least 5 seconds before you call action and after you call cut). This will give you and your editor options in post! - After the first time you record, you may want to check your footage to ensure everything is on your SD Card: - Move the camera power switch to MEDIA. Select your clip with the joystick and use the playback buttons to review:
