2 BIG PICTURE. THE BE-CaSE UR SMaRT is a brand new, innovative campaign which will aim to reduce the levels of phone usage within the general population. After multiple studies it is evident that mobile phone addiction is a significant problem and can significantly affect the physical and mental health of an individual. Mobile phone addiction is referred to as problematic phone use. It is a behavioural addiction and shares similarities to that of gambling, internet, shopping and video game addiction. It is a dependance syndrome and can lead to severe impairment, distress in one s life, negative emotions and insomnia. As well as this, the addiction can lead to a failure to release Melatonin (makes you feel relaxed), shrinking of brain matter, reduced inhibitions, memory loss and nerve damage within the eyes to say just a few. This campaign will tackle the issue by designing visually interesting phone cases which educate the public on the problems which may be faced due to phone overuse or addiction. The phone case designs may be presented in a physical form or simply presented within a poster or advertisement. The aim is to get the public to question whether they use or rely on their phones too much and to trigger a response in the form of a reduction in mobile phone usage. The campaign will be colourful, vibrant and may use humor to share its message, rather than the gloomy Smoking kills warnings that you can find on cigarette packaging.

3 01 I will cause your brain to shrink... Due to the huge presence of smart phones in our modern day lives, a number of health conditions have been established because of this technological problem. One of the many health problems that are caused due to mobile phone overuse is the possibility of the users brain to shrink. Your mobile phone is a microwave transmitter and it should bear a cancer warning! Microwave energy oscillates at millions to billions of cycles per second. The Journal of Cellular Biochemistry reports that these frequencies cause cancer and other diseases by interfering with cellular DNA and its repairmechanisms. Microwaves promotes rapid cell aging. Italian scientists have recently demonstrated that cell phone radiation makes cancerous cells grow aggressively. Research by University of Washington professor Dr. Henry Lai shows brain cells are clearly damaged by microwave levels far below the U.S. government s safety guidelines. Motorola advises consumers to avoid pointing a cellular antenna toward exposed parts of the body. But independent tests show that cell phones can also leak huge amounts of radiation from the keypad and mouthpiece. This radiation deeply penetrates brain, ear and eye tissues, which are especially susceptible to microwave damage. The phone case above aims to illustrate the effect a mobile device has on the brain in a colourful and vibrant way.

4 02 I will expose you to radiation... In a nutshell, radiation is energy that s travelling through space in the form of waves or particles. It occurs naturally and has always been around, we ve evolved with it and we re bombarded with it in one form or another every day of our lives - from the earth, from space and even within our own bodies. The type of radiation emitted from mobile phones is electromagnetic radiation. It s present in mobiles because they use radio frequency (RF) waves to make and receive calls. Even if you don t use a cell phone for hours each day, research by leading brain imaging researcher Nora D. Volkow, MD of the National Institutes of Health, revealed that after just 50 minutes of cell phone exposure, the emitted radiation increases brain cell activity in the region closest to the cell phone antenna.1 The exact health effects of that increased brain activity are as of yet unknown, but the study effectively debunked the myth in U.S. government research circles that cell phone radiation at non-thermal levels is incapable of causing biological change. The link between brain damage and cell phone use is becoming too strong to deny. Last year, even the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), reviewed relevant studies and declared that cell phones are possible cancer-causing agents, in the same category as diesel engine exhaust, some pesticides, and some heavy metals.

5 2 I have more germs than your filthy student toilet seat... Lets face it, we are always touching dirty things. The problem is, we are also always touching our phones, transferring that bacteria to our devices! We wash our hands, but never clean our phones! Have you ever used your phone in the bathroom? (Don t worry, we all have.) Then it shouldn t surprise you that 1 in 6 cell phones have fecal matter on them! Did you know that your cell phone has 18x more harmful bacteria than that handle in a public restroom we all try to avoid? If you have ever used your phone after leaving the bathroom, you made them dirtier than you did in the bathroom. Our phones don t just collect the bacteria from all of the grossness we touch, they BREED 03 bacteria! Our phones are always warm from the battery and we store them in tight, dark spaces like pockets and purses. Your phone is where germs go to party. Not only are the extra bacteria on our phones bombarding our immune systems, they can also cause some serious facial effects. Some types of acne come directly from talking on the phone! Pressing your cheek and chin against your phone can exacerbate acne by allowing bacteria to get into those pores, causing chaos. The design above has played with a simplistic toilet seat element to raise awareness about how gross our phones are...disgusting right?

6 04 I will ruin your relationship... Nothing kills romance faster than pulling out a smartphone, and now, research confirms it. Being attached to your phone seems to sabotage your attachment with your loved one. Plenty of research has been done on how cell phones affect relationships. Some suggests that they re a positive influence that being in easy, intimate touch with a partner through calling and texting makes people happier and more secure in their relationships. Other research reveals the dark side of cell phones. Real-life interactions are dulled when a person feels the urge to check their phone, and the distraction a phone affords one partner doesn t make the other person feel good. When your partner attends to a phone instead of to you, it feels like rejection it hurts. Feeling ignored when your partner is on their phone can feel as bad as being shunned. When a conversation, meal, or romantic moment is disrupted because of a text, , or any other task, the message is, What I m doing on my phone is more important than you right now, or, I m more interested in my phone than in you, or, in some cases, you re not worthy of my attention. It is because the other person is likely to experience such moments as rejections that technoference can literally impact their psychological health. Rejections, even small ones, tend to be extremely painful, as your brain responds the same way it does to physical pain.
