2 Background of Nordic ehealth collaboration First Nordic telemedicine project was in , teleradiology between Oulu, Reykjavik, Tromsoe. Teleradiology/telemedicine conferences arranged by Swedish SPRI in early 1990 ties First Nordic Conference for Telemedicine in Finland 1998 Nordic Council of Ministers financed Dr Thomas Steengard from Grönland to write a Report of telemedicine in the Nordic Countries

3 Formal establishment and early actitivities 1999 Nordic Telemedicine Association was founded in Ilulissat in Grönland as a federation of the national telemedicine associations and respective organisations. NTA is officially registrated body under Norwegian law. Published reports about telemedicine in the Nordic Countries and use of in patient contacts. NordUnet collaboration, consulting the use of wideband network in telemedicine, evaluator of research projects. Newsletter, Website Initiative Nordisk Hälsonet -> Baltic ehealth -> other projects, e.g. in EU-level.

4 Nordic Conferences 1996, Kuopio, FIN 1998, Reykjavik, ISL 2000, Copenhagen, DEN 2002, Tromsoe, NOR 2004, Umeå, SWE 2006, Helsinki, FIN 2008, Copenhagen, DEN (session at WoHIT) Since 2010 no formal Nordic conferences on ehealth/telemedicine National conferences in Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden have regularly Nordic guest speakers. Nordic Theme sessions. (e.g. in WoHIT, HIMMS)

5 ehealth in Nordic countries today (15 yrs later) ehealth is strongly supported in national health strategies. Ministerial level meetings. Nordic countries are leading countries in Europe, in terms of ehealth service availability (EU surveys 2008 and 2011). Strong adherence to standards, public funding and centralized governance.

6 Nordic ehealth Research Network, NeRN Established in Financed partly by Nordic Council of Ministers. Close collaboration with OECD ehealth indicator work. Compare policies, develop joint indicators. First report shows more similarities than differences in the ehealth policies and priorities. The results will create a basis for evidence-based policy making as well as benchmarking and learning best practices from each other. 9 Nordic session today Examples from Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Finland show how citizen-centered services are built upon a national infrastucture. The cases are presented by actors who are involved in national implementation of ehealth strategies. The presentations give a nice insight of national architecture, required legal changes and practical examples of services, both to professionals and citizens.
