4 Introduction Apps in the Car / February 2015 Overview For the purpose of this report and survey, IHS commissioned exclusive consumer research through Lightspeed GMI and developed the primary research questions. The data analysis and written report were managed by IHS analysts with experience in the relevant market Apps in the Car was managed and produced by Colin Bird, IHS Senior Analyst: Automotive Software, Apps, and Services. The fieldwork for the report was conducted in December 2014 (US & UK) and in January 2015 (China & Germany). While each survey is similar, certain questions had region-specific answers, for instance when discussing brands or pricing. Some technology standards vary by country as well; this is also reflected in the survey and accompanying data worksheets. The 4009 respondents split evenly across the US, UK, Germany, and China were surveyed using our research partner Lightspeed GMI. Respondents were asked to complete a survey online in their local language. IHS screened and filtered survey participants based on the following criteria: - The respondent s household had to already own a vehicle - The respondent had to plan to buy a brand new vehicle within the next 3 years - The respondent had to think they would be personally involved in the purchasing decision of the next vehicle, or be undecided 4

5 Methodology Consumer research Apps in the Car / February 2015 IHS used a quota system when gathering the sample for the survey in order to develop a representative sample of the region being studied. In this survey, gender, age, household income, and region were monitored and quotas were applied where necessary. In some cases, such as in the US and UK, race and or ethnicity were also included in the quota. Quotas varied by country. Tests of significance IHS included tests of significance in the provided Excel workbooks. When comparing subgroups of the sample, some results will show statistically significant differences. The 95% confidence level was applied to the data, meaning that there is a 95% chance that the significant difference is real and cannot be explained away by sampling error alone. Most of the data highlighted throughout the written report had statistical significance. Report analysis The aim of this written report is to capture some of the main results produced by the survey. There are literally thousands of possible data cuts that could have been included. Readers of this report are strongly advised to make use of the accompanying SPSS data and Excel workbook data to analyze as desired. Guidance can be given on how best to do this. This report has been split into broad categories in an attempt to best structure the results. These categories are: Car purchasing, Respondent profiles, Infotainment, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto/MirrorLink, Smartphone, Mobile carrier and data plan, Apps, Navigation, Music 5

6 Definitions This report primarily explores consumer attitudes and behavior as it pertains to utilizing smartphones and mobile apps in the car. In addition, questions related to infotainment systems, display audio, audio, HMI, and telematics systems were also asked. A mobile app is an application originally intended to run on a smartphone or tablet computer. Most integrated applications installed on in-vehicle infotainment systems also closely resemble mobile apps. Because of this and for the purposes of this report, the word app applies to any computer program installed within an in-vehicle infotainment system and or installed on a smartphone or tablet computer.
