2 Survey Methodology Survey conducted by Futron Corporation for SIA Survey targets large international companies operating in four satellite industry segments Satellite Manufacturing Launch Industry Satellite Services Ground Equipment Manufacturing Survey questions geared to gather employment, revenue, and other relevant information specific to each industry segment Futron augments survey data with publicly available data to provide the complete industry picture 2

3 Survey Methodology SIA believes it important to reflect the revenue earned by subcontractor companies in the survey results Many major and smaller aerospace companies rely on revenue earned by serving as subcontractors in the manufacture of components and systems for satellites and launch vehicles Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Industry revenues include both payments to prime contractors/service providers and payments to subcontractors The survey results show both total revenue (include payments to subcontractors) and revenue earned by prime contractors 3

16 Findings In 2001, the world satellite industry experienced a modest growth of 3% despite a significant downturn in the overall global telecom marketplace. Stronger growth is estimated in 2002 (19%). Revenue growth continues to be driven by the satellite services sector which achieved 18% growth in 2001 and is estimated to more than triple in size from 1996 to While world satellite manufacturing revenues declined by 18% in 2001, U.S. satellite manufacturing revenues declined by 38%. 16

17 Findings Similarly, world launch industry revenues declined by 41% in 2001, while the U.S. launch industry revenues declined by 59% The ground equipment sector has been a consistent performer during the survey period, growing by nearly 11%. 17

18 Analysis Growth in the satellite services sector is being driven by consumer-oriented video services with the introduction of modest, but important, growth in the provision of internet and satellite radio services. Traditional transponder leasing revenues are expected to remain steady but are unlikely to experience significant growth. Satellite manufacturing and launch services represent the new plant and equipment of the industry and are therefore the first to experience the impact of slower growth and/or overcapacity. 18

19 Analysis The larger reduction in US launch and manufacturing industry revenues, when compared to the reduction in global revenues, reflect a number of complex factors including: The increased competitiveness of foreign suppliers Fluctuation in international exchange rates A continued global perception that US satellite export control policies are a barrier to commerce 19
