3 ICT VISION The municipality s ICT vision is to enable a digital city by This means Durban will be the leading African city in the provision of affordable, high quality, equitable broadband access to all its citizens, the business community, and visitors. The fundamental objective is to provide ubiquitous, high quality network that supports the current and future essential network and applications of the municipality, as well as telecommunication services in voice, video, and data.

5 INFRASTRUCTURE PROBLEMS Fibre breaks. no redundancy in certain fibre routes. No spare fibres on certain routes. Fibre not used efficiently. No ability to keep different traffic separate and secure on the network. Fibre Network only available in the City Centre.

6 PRINCIPLES FOR A CARRIER GRADE NETWORK Ability to offer quad play services to the ethekwini Municipality, the citizens, businesses and visitors in the Municipal area. Affordable voice and data services for the lower income citizens of the ethekwini Municipal Area (EMA). Ability of the technology to split a single pair of fibres to make efficient use of our fibre infrastructure. Ability to interconnect and interoperate with other networks, including other carrier class type networks. Protection of the municipality s investment in current infrastructure Scalablility Reliablility Redundancy and resilience Flexibility, responsiveness and adaptability of platform to meet long term network growth and meet changing business needs.

7 PRINCIPLES FOR A CARRIER GRADE NETWORK No single point of failure Excellent performance and response times, i.e. extremely fast speeds with the ability to increase bandwidth quickly. Ability to carry multiple protocols. Functionality of platform must ensure short term and long term service requirements (e.g. IPv6 for investment protection) Simplicity (reduced complexity) and ease of management The infrastructure must be fully MPLS enabled.
