About the smalltrip The smalltrip unit delivers differential correction data (RTK or DGPS) to your GPS receiver through mobile Internet (GMS/GPRS). It uses the Ntrip protocol (RTCM standard) for receiving correction data via mobile Internet, and it is possible to receive status information from the unit as SMS messages. The smalltrip unit can also be used for normal modem-to-modem connection for directly access to a reference station. The smalltrip unit is configured through SMS messages or from a PC. Through Internet the unit is able to receive RTCM/CMR correction data from both single-base and VRS-stations. As many differential beacon receivers the smalltrip unit is completely automated. The unit automatically logs onto the reference station specified, or the reference station within the shortest distance to the rover-gps according to the reference station geographic placement. Information about different reference stations (sources) is automatically updated through the Internet. The smalltrip unit will log off, when the GPS receiver is turned off or if a user pushes the front button of the unit. The smalltrip unit can be a substitute (drop-in) for differential beacon receivers and other wireless media such as FM/RDS(FM-radio). Limiting factors/requirements: A supplier of differential correction via the, which covers the region you wish to make your measurement in. 4 Indicators The front of the smalltrip units are equipped with two or three indicators and a function key (pushbutton) hereafter referred to as front key. The smalltrip QUAD version is only equipped with two indicators. The front key is used for switching off the RTCM / CMR dataflow and for switching on/turning off the unit. The indicators are for status output. The red indicator. The first indicator from your left hand side (red) shows that power is applied to the unit. The green indicator. The second indicator (green) shows the status of the Ntrip/RTCM dataflow. When you have a valid source list (updated list of reference stations), this indicator flashes, and is on constantly when receiving RTCM or CMR data. The yellow indicator. The indicator to your far right (yellow) shows the status of the GSM/GPRS net. A very fast flashing yellow indicator means communication with the GSM/GPRS modem. A slow flashing indicator means that the modem is registered at the GSM net. And the GSM/GPRS indicator is constantly on, when the unit is online at the Internet. When receiving RTCM or CMR data all indicators are on. Front Key By using this key it is possible to turn on the unit or to stop the RTCM dataflow for breaks of the measurements. The smalltrip unit automatically turns on, when connected to power (12 VDC). A break in the RTCM dataflow is initiated by pushing the front key for approximately 2 seconds (while the green and the yellow indicators flash simultaneously). The pause-mode is terminated (when the measuring is resumed) in the same manner by pressing the front key for approximately 2 seconds. Please wait approximately 30 seconds, while shifting between pause-mode and online-mode. The smalltrip unit is switched off by constantly pressing the front key for more than 5 seconds (while the green and yellow indicators flash simultaneously). When the green and yellow indicators stop flashing, release the front key and the unit will turn off. The unit is turned on again by giving the front key a short push. The red indicator will always be on (if the unit is connected to power (12 VDC) also if the unit is Version 1.9.2b; All rights reserved to smalltouch ApS 4
turned off. If you wish to disconnect the power for the unit, the unit must have been switched off by the front key for more than 10 seconds due to the GSM net. When the smalltrip unit is left out of operation the power supply should be disconnected. SIM Card If the SIM card, you wish to use in the smalltrip unit, is protected by a PIN code, you must change the PIN code to 2204 by use of a standard mobile telephone. This must be done before the SIM card is used in the smalltrip unit. Remember that all unread SMS messages on the SIM card will be deleted, and also remember to send all unsent SMS messages, which may be saved on the SIM card. The smalltrip unit saves its configuration data as an unsent SMS message. The SIM card and the subscription from the telephone supplier must be for GPRS Internet communication and the GPRS access is to be activated. The SIM card must be placed in the smalltrip, with the contact side down-wards. On smalltrip QUAD unit the SIM card is inserted at the front, release the two screws and gently pull the front panel upwards, and put in the SIM card. Configuration of smalltrip (The unit is turned on and the yellow indicator (GSM) is slowly flashing) Configuration strings can be send as SMS messages directly to the smalltrip unit (its telephone number), which must be done before the unit is used. Naturally the unit can be reconfigured by sending a new configuration string. When you wish to reconfigure the unit, you have to force the unit into pause-mode. Pause-mode is initialized by pressing the front key for approximately 2 seconds. The following is a description of a configuration string, which is to be send: [TEXT-OPTION] CONFIG,NTRIP,[COMSPEED],[GPRS-CONTEXT],[GPRS-USERID],[GPRS- PASSW], [URL:PORT],[USER:PASSWORD], [CRITERIA] COMSPEED = Communication speed on the serial port for outgoing RTCM/ DGPS [4K8, 9K6, 19K2, 38K4 or 57K6]. Normally [9K6]. The communication speed of the smalltrip unit should be the same as the GPS receivers speed. GPRS-CONTEXT = Network parameter for GPRS APN gateway, are setup according to the GSM mobile phone provider demands. For more information on Network parameter please refer to: Tele_GPRS provider settings.txt on Version 1.9.2b; All rights reserved to smalltouch ApS 5
GPRS-USERID = Network parameter for GPRS Connection user name GPRS-PASSW = Network parameter for GPRS Connection password URL:PORT = The URL(or IP-address) and port number for the Ntrip Caster, can look like: catnet-ip.icc.es:8080/catnet-ip or :8080 USER:PASSWORD = Username and password from the supplier of correction data. Sometimes only your address is used. TEXT-OPTION = This TEXT-OPTION can be used by SMS configuration and administration. It is possible to create, save and administrate several SMS configuration messages in the mobile phone, with each own significant identity. CRITERIA = MOUNT: Mount-point (name of source) you want to connect to (receive RTCM from). SKIP-TABLE: Tell the smalltrip unit, not to download the source-table from Internet, but go directly to the specified mount-point. NEED-GGA: Define that the mount-point specified need to receive your rover-gps receiver NMEA-position. SKIP-NMEA: Only for use while running tests. The smalltrip unit will log on to the source (ref. station) without a GPSreceiver connected to it. PLEASE NOTE: You must always have seven pieces of, data field delimiter characters in a configuration string also if some of the fields are empty. Examples of configuration string for CATNET-IP (VRS DGPS) in Spain through Amena: CONFIG,NTRIP,9K6,internet,CLIENTE,AMENA,catnet-ip.icc.es:8080/CATNET-IP,USER:PASSWORD, MOUNT:VRS_RTCM_2.3 Or as the following for Trignet (RTK) in South Africa through Vodacom: CONFIG,NTRIP,9K6,internet,,, :2101/TrigNetCaster,my@mail.com,MOUNT:CTWN0,SKIP-TABLE Or as the following for ASCOS (VRS RTK) through O2 in Germany, with text-option: ASCOS VRS_2 CONFIG,NTRIP,9K6,internet,,, :8080,USER:PASSWORD, MOUNT:VRS_2,SKIP-TABLE,NEED-GGA After SMS configuration of the smalltrip, the unit will send a SMS confirmation back to your mobile phone. The smalltrip unit will call/log-on to the reference station without a GPSreceiver connected to it. PLEASE NOTE: You must always have seven pieces of, data field delimiter characters in a configuration string also if some of the fields are empty. Example of configuration-string for use of a local reference-station with GSM-modem based on V.110/X.31 modulation with a baud-rate at 9600bs: CONFIG,MODEM,9K6,MODUL:171,DIAL: And here for connection to a virtual reference-station (network) via GSM-modem, using autobauding: CONFIG,MODEM,9K6,MODUL:10,DIAL: ,NEED-GGA Version 1.9.2b; All rights reserved to smalltouch ApS 7
Configuration through Hyper Terminal Send a configuration string by HyperTerminal is as sending it by SMS messages. However, the underlined text is added to the strings as the following example show for GPSnet.dk through TDC s net in Denmark: $PSLL,CONFIG,NTRIP,9K6,internet,,, :9000,USER:PASSWORD <CR NL> The Hyper-Terminal is turned on with baud-rate configuration as 9600/ 8bits/ non flow-control. And setup to send new-line <NL> sign after the end-of-line. Receipt of Status Announcements from the smalltrip unit It is possible to receive a number of status announcements from the smalltrip unit by SMS. For instance, you can receive an announcement about which Ntrip-source is used. You send a query SMS to the smalltrip unit s telephone number, and the unit responds by returning a status announcement such as: NTRIP,STATUS -> Query Ntrip status, which source is used and types of RTCM message. NTRIP, USER -> Ntrip user account (IP-address:port and user:password). NTRIP,LIST -> List of sources (ref. Stations) within the area of maximum 140Km from your rover-gps receiver (baselines). GPRS, STATUS -> Returns the GPRS-connection status like GPRS-context, name of telephone operator, how many bytes have been transferred on GPRSconnection and antenna signal-quality level (3 is needed). NMEA,LIST -> A list of received NMEA-strings (GGA, RMC, GSA,,,,,). NMEA,FIX -> The last known GPS-position (NMEA GGA-string) of the unit. FIRMV -> The smalltrip unit s software version (name, version, date, time). PLEASE NOTE: The unit must be in pause-mode in order to be able to receive these status announcements. Pause-mode is initialized by pressing the front key for approximately 2 seconds. Version 1.9.2b; All rights reserved to smalltouch ApS 8
Plugs and cable The smalltrip unit can only be connected to an Ntrip source when it receives GGA-NMEA strings from a GPS receiver. Thus the connection to the Ntrip source will be disconnected in case the GPS receiver is turned off. smalltrip QUAD The smalltrip unit transmit RTCM-/CMR data on pin 3 (Tx #1 or TxD), and receives GGA-NMEA strings on smalltrip SE pin 2 (Rx #1 or RxD). The smalltrip unit sends/ receives data and is energized through the same plug. When the smalltrip unit is left out of operation the power supply should be disconnected. Power supply The used power supply must be able to give at least 1.6A at 8VDC (equivalent to 14W) and the cable for the power supply must be a heavy kind (such as for instance 0.75mm2/220V cable). Antenna When using the smalltrip unit in Europe, you must use an antenna of Dual band (900/1800MHz) type, preferably with a gain in the area of 3-5dB and with the connector type FME (female). The antenna is mounted according to the instructions delivered with the antenna, and as far away from other transmitting/receiving equipment as possible at a minimum with a distance of four feet/120 cm. Also keep a good distance to other electronic devices. On this picture you see an antenna for window mounting. With an antenna like this it is possible to mount the antenna on a vehicle without making holes and going through any kind of trouble with leading the cable into the car. The antenna is simply glued onto the outside of the window, and a small box is glued on the inside from which the antenna cable leads to the smalltrip unit.
