38 Overview of Activity in AT&T Labs Massive MIMO Technology Development Testing & Trial Multi-RAT Connectivity Tools and Prototype Technology Standardization Key Milestones and Achievement Actively contributing towards the development and standardization of 5G specs In Rel 15, we designed and shaped many key areas of 5G NR. We are one of the top contributors to standards amongst operators Developing many new technologies such as IAB, low resolution massive MIMO systems, high speed beam tracking, and ultra-reliable network codin. 38 System Prototyping and Measurements Advanced NR Testbed System Designed and built a 28GHz channel sounder to evaluate and measure mmwave channels. Currently developing a complete in-house POC system for advanced technology demonstrator (ANTS) Evaluate technology and concept before standardizing on a real system Testbeds, Trials and Pilots Testbed Overview 1 st Testbed is operational and used for the 28GHz technology evaluation and friendly user trial. 2 nd Testbed is under construction Capable of hosting multiple vendors and conducting a variety of tests such as outdoor, indoor, outdoorto-indoor, and mobile Capable of different architectures such as CRAN, DRAN, and VRAN.

39 mmwave Basics mmwave provide mobile operators with >10x more spectrum than their counter parts in sub 6GHz 2GHz 5GHz 28 GHz 39 GHz Does come with challenges: In building penetration loss Small antenna aperture Blocking (self blocking) Lack of diffraction NLOS predominantly from reflection 10x increase in BW (sampling rate of ADC) >20x increase in number of antennas P= f( BN, RF ) Pure digital beamforming is prohibitive in mmwave from a power consumption point of view 39

40 Mobility on mmwave In a fixed environment, usage of mmwave is trivial. Once a BPL (beam pair link) is locked the system is relative stable: Extensive testing since 2016 in AT&T s testbed to validate and study this. On a mobile platform, the beam management becomes crucial and has 3 main challenges Beam Tracking Beam Failure Detection Beam Recovery Beam management functionality of NR allows the gnb and UE to track the Tx and Rx beam Reciprocity based techniques and/or RSRP feedback based techniques can be used 40 Detection of beam failure due to dynamic blockers is a complex field (need to avoid false detection) For high speed traditional RSRP based measurements are too slow (reliability vs speed of detection) New beams needs to be found once all beams (or a subset) of beams fail. RACH like procedure (we strongly recommend recovery for partial failure)

41 Multi-Point Connectivity CORE CU DU TRP L1 Multi Point L2 Multi-Point L3 Handover Blocking is a form of shadow fading that we see in mmwave. Faster transition time (50msec of less) (less at highway speeds) Traditional handover cannot mitigate this since the connectivity would be lost before handover messages can be sent to the UE. Rather beam based mobility and beam recovery mechanism are more robust along with multi-trp transmission 41
