Every day more and more companies are requiring their employees to be certified in their particular specialty. For a long time, ASPE has been part of this ongoing trend, and we will continue to do so in the future. As president of ASPE and a member of our Certification Committee, I feel that we need to continue promoting certification as a benefit to the plumbing industry because it improves plumbing engineers knowledge, understanding, and skills in new technologies and product developments and their applications. Education, knowledge, and training are never a bad thing even to those who think they know everything. I personally do not know everything and look forward to new educational experiences. It benefits me and my employer to know and understand the new products and technologies that are being used in our industry. Did you know that ASPE was one of the first organizations in our industry to require a recertification program? I know that many of you feel that this is just another way for ASPE to make money. I wish it was, but the $50 recertification fee barely covers the costs to maintain such a crucial program. We know that when ASPE first came out with the program, many members felt that the CPD designation was not credible in the industry and did not aid in the development of their professional growth. However, many states require architects, professional engineers, inspectors, and many others in the construction industry to earn continuing education credits to keep their professional registrations. These credits indicate that an individual has kept him- or herself educated on the new and ever-changing technologies and techniques of their trade. This is just a further indication that we as plumbing engineers need to keep up with our peers in the industry. The Certification Committee will be making several changes to the CPD program this year. The recertification schedule and the recertification form will be overhauled and simplified. We also will simplify the terminology for certification credits, using the acronym CEU (continuing education unit) as the standard on all documentation. When you are renewing your CPD, you will need to submit documentation of all of the CEUs you are claiming with your recertification application, or it will not be accepted. However, the process can be streamlined if you keep records throughout the year. The easiest way is to request a certificate indicating the number of CEUs you earned whenever you take a class or attend a meeting. This will also help if you are chosen for a random audit. The Certification Committee will be working with the Education Committee to ensure that ASPE is offering numerous opportunities for CPDs to get the required recertification credits. As a reminder, you can earn almost all of the required CEUs during one event if you attend the ASPE Convention or Technical Symposium. I know that some of you have ideas about what the committee should be doing or comments on the changes to the CPD program. The Certification Committee is looking for your input and recommendations. We are always willing to listen to your comments, corrections, or criticism. As much as we try to get things right, someone will always think of something we missed. We are here because of you.
