INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose of the Challenge To evaluate each competitor's skills and to recognize excellence and professionalism in the field of IT network systems administration. 1.2 Duration of contest 12 hours 1.3 Skills and Knowledge to be tested The competition evaluates a competitor s knowledge of computer and network hardware. 2. CONTEST DESCRIPTION 2.1 List of documents produced and timeline for when competitors have access to the documents. DOCUMENT No other competition document will be released prior to the competition DATE OF DISTRIBUTION VIA WEBSITE 2.2 Tasks that may be performed during the contest Desktop setup 9 Identify, install, connect and test hardware components 7 Install Operating Systems Install and configure virtual machines Use disk, system, and file management tools Install, setup, and configure corporate productivity software products Install and verify correct operation of peripheral devices 7 Desktop software configuration Use technical documentation including specifications and procedures 8 Configure and install core software operating system functionality including tasks such as: setting Windows themes and control panel settings Page 2

3 Networking Interpret network diagrams 8 Operate basic network diagnostic software utilities Implement static and dynamic addressing services for hosts in a Local Area Network (LAN) environment Implement, verify and troubleshoot hardware and software network configuration 7 Implement, verify, and troubleshoot securing of network devices 9 Install wireless hardware and software device drivers on client machines 9 Configure and verify deployment of wireless communication Troubleshooting 7 Analyze and resolve common Desktop problems Use available documentation and logs to identify and resolve problems Fix and document resolution using customer complaint descriptions Troubleshoot software installation problems Problem examples might include things like; inability to login, cannot access website, or machine not starting properly etc. Essential Skills 7 Thinking (Critical, Problem Solving, Job Task Planning and Organizing) 8 Document Use 9 Digital 3. EQUIPMENT, MATERIAL, CLOTHING 3.1 Equipment and material provided by Skills/Compétences Canada Suitable computer hardware Linksys SOHO Integrated Router device Suitable computer hardware VMWare virtualization software Windows 7 Note: Any network services provided are for candidate use, not configuration or management. 3.3 Equipment and material provided by the competitor Pen and Pencil 3.4 Required clothing (Provided by competitor) Competitors must be dressed as appropriate for an office environment. 4. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS 4.1 List of required personal protective equipment(ppe) provided by competitors No PPE required Page 3

ASSESSMENT 5.1 Point breakdown Point Breakdown /100 Desktop setup 25 Desktop software configuration 25 Networking 25 Troubleshooting ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 6.1 Consecutive translation If consecutive translation is required on site, the Skills/Compétences Canada Provincial/Territorial offices must advise Skills/Compétences Canada National Secretariat a minimum of 1 month prior to the competition or this service might not be guaranteed. 6.2 Software requirements If French software is required the Skills/Compétences Canada Provincial/Territorial offices must advise Skills/Compétences Canada National Secretariat a minimum of 1 month prior to the competition or this software might not be guaranteed. 6.3 Computer keyboard requirements English Keyboards will be provided, if a French keyboard is required the Skills/Compétences Canada Provincial/Territorial offices must advise Skills/Compétences Canada National Secretariat a minimum of 1 month prior to the competition or this keyboard might not be guaranteed. 6.4 Tie (No ties are allowed) In the event of a tie, placement will be determined based on highest mark in the Troubleshooting section, if this score is tied placement will be determined on highest mark in the networking section, if still tied placement will be determined on highest mark in the Desktop Software Configuration section. 6.5 Competition rules Please refer to the competition rules of the Skills Canada National Competition. 6.6 The Importance of Essential Skills for Careers in the Skilled Trades Essential skills are used in nearly every job and at different levels of complexity. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. Good Essential Skills means you will understand and remember concepts introduced in technical training. The level of Essential Skills required for most trades is as high or higher that it is for many office jobs. Page 4
