2 Key performance areas (4 6) (What) 1 IT Server and Equipment supervision and maintenance % of time spent JOB CONTENT Activities / Objectives / Tasks (How) 35% Maintain mam-server as a reliable server for web pages, Matlab license server, WebWork server, etc. Respond very promptly to server problems. Propose replacement when needed, especially at budget planning time. Ensure the good functioning of the department s printers, scanners, print servers, faxes, laptop(s), data projector(s), etc, including associated software and computers, liaising with ICTS as needed. Ensure the good functioning of the Maths building internal security camera system. Results / Outcomes (Why) Well functioning IT and security services. Departmental marks and document back up and security. 10% Put in place and monitor effective backup protocols for departmental files. Ensure sensitive files marks records, tests and exams are secure. Oversee the regular updating of the department s lists, Ensure the marks processing system is up to date and available to all staff. Maintain the suite of marks processing functions (the MP addin for Excel), timeously provide new functions as needs change, and ensure clear and up to date printable documentation that is easily available. 3 3 Finance 15% In cooperation with the departmental manager, prepare an IT budget for the department each year, manage the spending of the department s IT budget, and provide quarterly reports to the head. Oversee pc acquisition, replacement and software installation for new and current departmental staff, in liaison with Science Faculty IT Committee & ICTS. Maintain a record of staff computer acquisitions, and manage the replacement cycle. When staff leave or equipment is replaced, ensure the old equipment is properly redeployed, and is only disposed of if not needed. Well managed IT finances 4 Training and Supervision 15% Provide expertise in both Linux and Windows. Currently the University provides MS Windows for PCs & Novell servers, but the departmental labs run Linux. Provide supervision and operational support for the departmental computer labs. Liaise with NASSP IT staff as appropriate. These labs are currently Linux based. Advise the HoD or his representative on whether there is adequate computing support for students & staff. When requested by the departmental manager or the head, provide training to PASS staff in specialist software such as MiKTeX. 4 5 Maths software provision and maintenance 0% Aquire, install and maintain specialised software required by the department, such as MATLAB. Currently the department provides the MATLAB licence server for Science Faculty. Provide links to relevant free software such as MiKTeX, GhostScript, Acrobat Reader, WinSCP, The Gimp, Inkscape, Zip utilities, Total Commander, MS File Converters, SciLab, Anaconda, Firefox, Thunderbird, Skype, etc. Oversee the regular updating of the department s lists, Ensure the good functioning of the departmental webpages and the good organisation of the web files, liase with the departmental webmaster and the HoD or his repesentative. Write well-documented programs, macros, scripts, etc as needed or requested. Write accompanying help documents where appropriate. Provide the source code and help documents in soft copy to the HoD or his repesentative. Keep up to date with relevant IT and software developments, and make appropriate recommendations to the head. Good availability of programs needed in mathematics 6 IT Support and ICTS liason 5% Much basic IT support is provided ICTS. Provide limited second level support for more difficult software problems in MP, LaTeX/MiKTeX, WinSCP, MATLAB, HTML/CSS/PHP, MSWord, Excel, etc. Be the high level liason with ICTS. 5 Minimum qualifications Matric certificate (or equivalent) Recommendations: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Computer Science BSc degree or 3 year diploma in Information Technology or certification for some Unix system Minimum experience (type and years) Minimum of 3 years working experience Working knowledge of computer hardware and software Linux experience Recommendations: Several years programming experience (especially shell, perl, python, c, c++, javascript) Experience installing and configuring Windows, Linux and Mac desktops Experience installing and maintaining web servers (apache, html, php, sql, etc) Experience with a broad range of networking technologies Excellent knowledge and experience with Latex.
