3 History of RIA 1946 the RIA was established by a group of rug specialists and cleaners and was known as the National Institute of Rug Cleaners (NIRC). In the late 1960 s the association changed its name from the institute of Rug Cleaners, to the Association of Interior Décor Specialists (AIDS). 5 History of RIA In 1980 the association rebranded itself to the Association of Specialists in Cleaning in Restoration (ASCR) to better reflect the membership base. 6 History of RIA In the 90 s the NIFR became National Institute of Disaster Restoration (NIDR) to reflect the growing and maturing industry. 7 Development of CR Over the past four decades Marty King raised the bar for restoration to a professional level. In 1980, In tandem with Association leadership, Marty King developed the certification known as the Certified Restorer (CR), recognized as the equivalent to a Ph.D. degree at the time within the restoration profession. 8 Development of CR The long held CR Code of Ethics and Conduct has set Certified Restorers on a path to promote a long held doctrine of teachings that promote quality work, fair business dealings and ethical practices benefitting the restorer, insurance company and general public. 9 Code of Conduct 1. The CR will be familiar with, and adhere to, the contract and licensing requirements of the locality in which a project is performed. 2. Labor and Material contracts will be based on the actual costs incurred or in accordance with a previously agreed-upon rate schedule. Backup data will be provided if requested by the party responsible for payment. 3. Any estimate not prepared on the basis of direct inspection will be clearly marked as to the source of information and contain an introductory phrase indicating that the estimate was not based on direct inspection of the site. 4. It is unethical to submit an estimate based on the format of another firm unless approval of the originating firm is obtained and they are prominently credited in the introductory section of the estimate. 5. Estimates prepared after the work has been performed by another firm will be prominently marked as being prepared after the completion of work and not based on an inspection of actual site conditions. 6. Commitments are not made by CRs unless there is a strong likelihood they will be kept. 7. Estimate and contract provisions will be performed fully and accurately. 8. Personal information regarding clients is kept confidential. 9. Making disparaging remarks about competitors is unprofessional conduct. 10. Mistakes, when made, should be frankly acknowledged.

10 Curriculum Redevelopment A team of volunteers assembled to revise the course to bring it into the 21 st century. The team work a combined 9,000 hours to complete the new curriculum. Weekly phone calls, multiple onsite meetings, and convention meetings.

13 Proposed Curriculum Redevelopment 1. Fire and Smoke Specialist 2. Water Loss Specialist (updated in 2017) 3. Environmental Specialist (possibly redeveloped CMP program) 4. Contents Restoration Specialist 5. Leadership (a new pre requisite to the CR Curriculum) 6. Risk Management (a mandatory pre-requisite in 2017, a module of the RIA P&RM course)

15 Step 1: Proposed 4 Steps to Becoming a CR Meet the Pre-Qualifying Requirements Education & Work Experience High school diploma or equivalent education; OR active RIA CMP or WLS Certification Five (5) years of verifiable work experience or three (3) of verifiable supervisory experience (Experience can include: restoration worker, project supervisor, estimator, consultant, inspector, restoration company manager, facility manager, restoration instructor)

16 Step 2: Proposed 4 Steps to Becoming a CR Complete the Certified Restorer Prerequisite Courses To be eligible to take the CR Prep Course and sit for the exam, you must complete one course in each of the following domains. A certificate of completion will be required as verification that each domain requirement has been satisfied in the 6 required domains

18 Step 3: Proposed 4 Steps to Becoming a CR Take the CR Prep Course and Exam Complete the CR Application and Prep Course/Exam Registration online. Be prepared to upload the following documents with your application: 1. Resume 2. Letter of Recommendation (from Supervisor) 3. Certificate of Completion of each domain

19 Step 4: Proposed 4 Steps to Becoming a CR Complete the CR Formal Report Candidates are encouraged to bring a draft of your Formal Report to the CR Prep Course and receive immediate guidance and advice. (Your WLS Report or CMP Capstone may acceptable to use) Attempt to finalize your Formal Report within 90 days of completing the course for the CR induction ceremony for the convention! Note: The WLS program presently also requires a Research Paper on an approved topic in addition to a Formal Report.
