4 2. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME The overall aim of the MSc. Information Technology (Oil and Gas) programme is to enable students to develop O&G related knowledge and skills within the framework of Information Technology by allowing them to build on their previous qualifications, experience and career aspirations. The subject area is multi-disciplinary, involving an introduction to the underlying principles of working in the Oil and Gas industry. Furthermore the teaching of this specialist subject area entails a blend of fundamental principles, current techniques and applications. To this effect the curriculum of the O&G material has been incorporated into the structure of the existing MSc. IT programme. The broad scope of the programme is designed to stretch students educational horizons across traditional subject boundaries, encompassing areas normally associated with more traditional Information Technology, Engineering and Environmental Management. Thus students will need to understand and develop technical and non-technical opinions at an advanced level. The educational objectives of the programme and individual modules have been drawn together to : provide students with an understanding of the principles and implementation details of Information Technologies and Networking systems; provide students with up-to-date knowledge and skills to equip them for an IT career in the oil and gas industry; develop students competence in applying advanced skills to solve IT problems, using a critical and holistic approach; provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct projects efficiently, ethically and safely; enhance students interpersonal, communications and other transferable skills, so that they communicate effectively both orally and in writing, using a range of media; and are competent to operate in senior positions within industry; provide students with an opportunity to critically explore Oil and Gas related problems with others from different educational backgrounds, hence enhancing the breadth and depth of their viewpoints on such issues; allow students to acquire educational qualifications which will enable them to gain recognition by professional bodies; further develop students skills in research methods and professional practice, so that they can critically review the literature that will allow them to undertake advanced research and project work in IT related topics for the Oil and Gas industry; enable students to engage with life-long learning, research and creativity reinforced with scientific discipline and social awareness. The additional aim of the MSc. Project component of the programme is to: expand students existing expertise by providing the opportunity to undertake a significant piece of independent work in an Oil and Gas themed area. 5 4. PROGRAMME STRUCTURES AND REQUIREMENTS, LEVELS, MODULES, CREDITS AND AWARDS Each trimester has 60 SHEM level credits of taught modules where each module is either or SHEM level credit points. Each -credit module corresponds to approximately 0 hours of notional student effort (including various forms of class contact, private study and assessment). Each of the credit modules covers 2 X credit points and form part of the core and elective IT related modules. While the credit modules form part of the core and elective O&G related modules. The Masters dissertation is a 60 SHEM level credit module, normally completed during the summer months, and must be based on an Oil and Gas theme. The programme is offered on a full-time basis where the duration of the full time mode is one calendar year See Table 4.1. Those students starting in Trimester B will require an additional 4 months to complete the dissertation. See Table 4.2 The programme is offered on a part-time basis over two calendar years and involves credits per trimester see Table 4.3. Those students starting in Trimester B will require an additional 4 months to complete the dissertation. See Table 4.4. Trimesters A and B of the part-time programme comprises 1 core credit module or 1 core credit module and 1 elective credit module as chosen from a selection of electives, as shown in Table 4.4.
