1 Final Exam Preparation Final Exam Review & Procedures Your Final Exam will be available online in our class from Friday, December 30 through midnight on Tuesday, January 3. It is your responsibility to make yourself aware of the Final Exam testing date/time/procedures. English 1302: Final Exam Review Your final exam in this course will be multiple choice & short answer and it will be comprehensive; in other words, your exam will address all of the sections we ve covered in our assigned online readings along with all of the quizzes, course notes and discussion postings covered in class. Multiple Choice: This section will consist of 60 multiple choice questions worth one point each and 8 bonus multiple choice questions worth one point each for a maximum total of 68 points on the multiple choice section. Your multiple choice questions will come from the following areas: Literary Terms Short Stories Research Poetry Drama 8 miscellaneous bonus questions The multiple choice section will be similar to the quizzes you have taken this semester. You are welcome (and encouraged!) to use your quizzes to study prior to the Final Exam but, please note, your access to all of your quiz content will close on

2 the day the Final Exam begins. You will still be able to see your quiz grades but not the content of the quizzes. In other words, be prepared and study early! Short Answer: You will have to answer an essay question worth a maximum of 40 points in the short answer section. This essay question will require you to analyze one of the literary works we read in the class in relation to a literary work we did not read in the class, which will be included with the exam. Your response will need to be at least three paragraphs in length. The short answer section will be similar to (though not the same as) the Short Essay assignments you all have submitted this semester. It is in your best interest to review the feedback you received on those assignments to prepare. Also, you might want to review the Purdue OWL's section on Writing Essays for Exams: (Links to an external site.)links to an external site. Staying on Track: English 1302 Final Exam Study Guide You should use the assigned online readings, course notes, class discussion postings, and course quizzes to study for your final exam. The following is a brief outline of the major literary elements and works we covered this semester: Short Stories & Essays Franz Kafka s Metamorpohsis Edgar Allen Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher James Joyce s Eveline and The Dead (both of these readings can be found in the collection titled Dubliners) Jonathan Swift s A Modest Proposal

Exam Availability: Again, your final exam will be available from Friday, December 30 through midnight on Tuesday, January 3. It will probably take you about an hour to take the exam. You are responsible for setting aside time to take your exam before the due date. You are also responsible for being sure you have a reliable internet connection for your submission. If you have a questionable internet connection, it is strongly advised that you consider utilizing an on-campus computer lab or another reliable internet connection. You will need to set aside a minimum of one hour to take this exam. Only one attempt will be allowed. This exam cannot be paused once it has begun. If you go over your time limit, the exam will submit by itself. If you go past the due date deadline, the exam will submit by itself.

5 It is your responsibility to be aware of your exam's scheduled availability dates/times. The final exam cannot be made up at a later date. You are welcome to use your book if you like, but the timing of the exam will likely not allow you to look up every question. The use of any other outside sources will be penalized. You will be allowed a maximum of 90 minutes to take this exam. Grade Availability: Your test will automatically score your multiple choice questions, but the full Final Exam score, including the short answer score, will not be posted until approximately seven days after the exam due date/time to allow time for grading. Once you have submitted your Final Exam, your grade will show as "muted." Your full final exam grade will be available in your class by noon on Monday, January 9. Your final overall course grade will be available by Monday, January 9. Late exams are not accepted and the final exam cannot be made up at a later date. If you feel you have a situation that warrants special attention you should discuss the matter with your instructor as soon as possible. If you miss your exam due to an emergency, you should contact your instructor as soon as reasonably possible via our course Inbox or at mandy.palmer@hccs.edu to discuss your options and avoid any inaccuracies in your academic transcript.
