An e-book rental is available through CourseSmart.com ( You will need access to the textbook in class for lab work so if you choose the e-book, you will need a laptop to look at the lab pages in class or will need to print the lab pages before coming to class. Recommended Text Book - Microsoft Windows Operating System Essentials, Tom Carpenter ISBN This book is used for study materials for the Microsoft MTA certification exam, Windows Operating System Fundamentals. Additional course materials will be posted in the Online Classroom ( The student s okstate.edu address will be used for course announcements and other correspondence related to the class. Course Description This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide technical support with the current Microsoft desktop operating system. Students will develop an advanced proficiency using the windows desktop operating system, as such; students will need prior knowledge and skills with windows desktop operating systems. The student will understand the operating system configurations, installing and upgrading client systems, managing applications, managing files and folders, managing devices, and operating system maintenance. Course prepares student to take the Microsoft technology associate (MTA) windows operating systems fundamentals certification exam. Prerequisites: College Level Reading Course Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of ITD1113: Windows Expert User, students will: (1) Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in using the Windows 7 operating system including: 1.1. Demonstrate proficiency with the Windows 7 user interface: Customize and modify the Start menu and taskbar. Apply personalized settings for the appearance and sound used by the operating system. Utilize Windows Gadgets. Recognize and use the various features for manipulating Windows (menus, title bars, dialog and message boxes, cascading menus, dragging and dropping, pop-up menus, icons and toolbars) Utilize shortcut keys for common operations Perform file management tasks using Windows Explorer and command-line tools. Use Windows Explorer to: o browse to a specific folder and file o view the contents of a specific folder o create a new folder in a specified location o create a new file in a specific folder ITD1113 Page 1 of 5 Grafton, FALL, 2014

2 o delete an existing file or folder o copy a file or folder to a new location o move a file or folder to a new location o Search for files and folders. o Organize files using folders. o Manage Windows Explorer settings. Use command-line tools to: o display the contents of a specific folder o create a new folder in a specified location o create a new file in a specific folder o delete an existing file or folder o copy a file or folder to a new location o move a file or folder to a new location 1.3. Utilize Windows 7 security tools to provide the appropriate level of security for the system. Secure file and folder resources using NTFS permissions and encryption Configure local user accounts. Implement and configure the Windows Firewall. Protect the operating system from malware. Manage operating system updates. Manage Internet Explorer security Use Windows tools to troubleshoot system problems and to optimize system performance. Utilize Windows Help and online information resources to locate troubleshooting information. Display system information Repair a network connection. Recover from software errors. Troubleshoot printing errors. Recover the operating system from a problem. Request and manage Remote Assistance. Backup and restore files Identify and use the applications provided with the operating system (MS Paint, WordPad, Calculator, etc.) Install applications not included in the operating system Install and manage hardware devices Manage disks. Manage devices and drivers. Manage display settings. Configure multiple monitors. Manage the computer power state. Install and configure local and network printers Implement Windows 7 networking features, share and access network resources. Configure network connections. Share folders and manage access to shared resources on the computer. Use UNC notation to access shared network resources. Map a drive letter to shared network resources. Implement Remote Desktop access to the computer Connect to shared network resources Implement offline folders to access files stored in shared network folders with the computer is offline. (2) Apply self-directed learner skills to learn about Windows 7 features and capabilities. (3) Demonstrate and explain Windows 7 concepts and features to an end user. 3 (4) Discuss ethical issues for IT users including responsible technology use, intellectual property, computer and Internet crime and privacy. Student Learning Outcomes Information Technology Networking Program Upon successful completion of the Information Technology-Networking degree program, students will: Apply knowledge and critical thinking skills to solve technical problems in networking. Work collaboratively in a team environment. Apply independent learning skills to learn new technologies. Discuss information security and its role in network systems. Implement, manage, and maintain a network infrastructure using Microsoft Windows client and server operating systems Install, configure and maintain current Microsoft Windows desktop operating system Demonstrate knowledge in the Linux operating system. Credit by Exam Option A comprehensive pre-test for this course will be given in the first week of classes. Students who pass the pretest with a score of 80% or more may elect to take the grade on that test as their course grade. Grades will be assigned using the grading scale in the course syllabus. Students who elect credit by exam remain enrolled in the course and are responsible for paying the course tuition. To obtain credit by exam for this course, the student will score at least 80% on the pre-test and will make a written request for credit by exam to the instructor by the end of the third week of the semester. Assignments Students are responsible for completing and submitting all assignments as indicated on the attached assignments sheet. Any additional assignments will be announced in class and/or announced in the online classroom. The instructor may assign additional homework or pop quizzes at her discretion throughout the semester. Review Assignments and Case Problem assignments from the textbook will be completed in the classroom lab on the date indicated on the class schedule. No assignment will be accepted after the due date posted for that assignment. You should always include references for the resources you use to complete an assignment. You are expected to cite references for web resources, magazines, the textbook or other books used in your work. You may reference other student's work if it is properly cited. The assigned projects and discussions will require you think about a problem and use the information learned in the chapter and through your research to present a reasoned solution to the problem. Cutting and pasting from another student's work or a web page is not acceptable work. Doing so is a violation of the University policy on academic conduct and subject to disciplinary action. AT A MININIMUM -- any presentation of someone else's work as your own (plagiarism) will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment. Following University policy, repeated occurrences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. Tutorial Quizzes Tutorial quizzes are open book quizzes that are taken in the online classroom as homework. You will have two opportunities to take the homework quiz. Your highest score on the quiz will be recorded. Tutorial Homework Assignments You will complete the Tutorial Review and assigned case studies at the end of each Tutorial. These assignments are put into a word-processed file and submitted in the dropbox in the online classroom. See assignment schedule for the specific case studies required. Small Group Review You will work in groups of 2-4 for these assignments. You will select one of the topics from the Tutorial prior to the group review. You will be prepared to teach this topic to the members of your group. The group will then present a summary of the topics presented by the members to the class. 4 Exams- There are 3 exams in the course. Each exam corresponds to a unit of instruction. The exams are open book/notes and taken online before the due date. Learn IT Yourself (LIY) Project The Learn IT Yourself Project is a self-directed learning exercise in which you will identify a Windows 7 topic that you would like to more about, develop a learning plan for that topic and finally make a presentation on the topic to the class. Please see the online classroom for detailed requirements for the LIY Project. Assignments should be submitted as word-processed documents and in good written English. Written assignments will be corrected for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Poorly written assignments will be returned for rewriting. Lab assignments will be submitted in the format specified by the instructor for the lab exercise. Attendance/Participation - Attendance is critical to success in this course. Each class period will offer opportunities to earn points toward the course grade. You will earn 5 points for each class you attend. There are 160 possible points; the instructor will use 120 points toward your attendance grade. The remaining points could be used for extra credit. If a class is cancelled for weather or instructor absence, you will not earn any points. There is no make up for missed attendance points Grading Procedure Grades will be based on total points earned (including any extra credit). Total possible points will accumulate throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, the grade is established by the following formula: (Points Earned / Points Possible) * 100 = Grading Scale Percentage Available Points Tutorial Lab exercises & 210 other in assignments Learning IT on Your Own 100 Project Tutorial Quizzes 350 Exams 500 Attendance 120 Total Possible Points 1280 Grading Scale Percentage Letter Grade A B C D Below 60 F Please note the exams have less than 50% of the available points for this course. To pass the class, you must attend class and do the homework and lab assignments. Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Certification Exam Any student may elect to take the Microsoft MTA certification exam, Operating System, to replace the final exam. Any student electing to take the Microsoft certification test must complete the test before the date of the final exam for the course. Students who pass and provide a copy of the certified test results from the awarded full points for the final exam. Students who take the test but do not pass and provide a copy of the certified test results 30 points extra credit and will be required to take the final exam. There is no fee for this exam, registration and the cost of the Microsoft certification exam is provided by the Information Systems and Technology department. Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend class. Lab work is an essential part of the course and can be completed only in the classroom lab. Lack of attendance will not automatically drop or withdraw a student from class. Students have the responsibility of processing a Drop from any class. Note most F s given at the end of the semester result from students ceasing attending the class and not processing a Drop. ITD1113 Page 4 of 5 Grafton, FALL, 2014

5 Faculty members are expected to report cases of repeated absenteeism to the academic division head. Instructors report to the Registrar the names of students who have not attended class during the first week of a semester for the purpose of enrollment verification. Making-Up Missed Exams Make-up assignments or exams for full credit are at the instructor s discretion with justifiable absences (i.e., illness, family emergency, business trip, military deployment, etc.). Written justification is required before the opening of the assignment or exam for planned events (i.e., business trip or military deployment). For other justifiable absences, contact the instructor as soon as possible after the absence. The instructor may require additional written proof before allowing make-ups (i.e., doctor s note, accident report, military orders, etc.). Service Learning Students are encouraged to complete service learning projects. Extra credit is available for students who complete an approved service learning project. Students who complete service learning projects are recognized at graduation and have the project completion noted on his/her OSUOKC Student Activity transcript.
