Notes: This week, we will focus on the essay portion of the ELA Regents Exam. You will start by selecting possible literature by using the phrase literary merit (from the ELA guidelines) as a filter. You can choose from short stories, novels, and plays that you have read in and out of school. Adversarial points will be given for in-class and online contributions to this discussion. You will also complete several major works data sheets to study before the official ELA exam. You are required to use one data worksheet for your choice novel, which you must have completed before May 19. You will also be required to use your Q4 choice book on your essay itself, which you will next week. Not using your Q4 choice book will prevent you from earning credit. You will take your second-to-last WDP quiz on May 23. It covers Lists 9-10.
MAY 27 MAY PERIODS POINTS May 27 May 29: Works of Literary Merit ADVERSARIAL: Q4-3 (ONGOING) OUTLINE: ELA REGENTS, QUESTION #28 (100 POINTS) 27 Critical lens: choosing a quotation and decoding the prompt. 28 Outlining and beginning the essay for Question # Continuing the essay for Question #28. You will spend this week deconstructing the critical lens, a quotation that you must use on your essay itself, and writing the essay itself. A required outline will be checked in on May 29. You will be completing more Castle Learning exercises on May 30.
JUNE 2 JUNE 6 5 PERIODS POINTS June 2 June 5: ELA Regents Exam Practice ADVERSARIAL: Q4-3 (100 POINTS) ESSAY WRITING: ELA REGENTS, QUESTION #28 (100 POINTS) 2 Question #28 essay due. June 6: Wilson Daily Prep, Lists 1-10 Quiz WDP QUIZZES: 1-10 (100 POINTS) 6 Fill-in-the-blank and matching quizzes on WDP vocabulary. Notes: You will score your essay for Question 28 by using the rubrics and exemplars provided by the state. We will work together to analyze practice papers. Adversarial points will be given for in-class and online contributions to this discussion, with June 5 fully devoted to using the Chromebooks to earn adversarial points. The 100-point completion grade for Question 28 will be assigned at the end of the week. You must use all of your class time appropriately in order to earn this grade. You will take your last WDP quiz on May 23. It covers all words (Lists 1-10).
JUNE 6 JUNE 12 4 PERIODS POINTS June 9 June 12: Final Exam FINAL EXAM (100 POINTS) 9 Final exam: close reading and multiple-choice questions (Day 1/4). 10 Final exam: close reading and multiple-choice questions (Day 2/4). 11 Final exam: close reading and multiple-choice questions (Day 3/4). 12 Final exam: close reading and multiple-choice questions (Day 4/4). Notes: The final exam is all completed in class, with a different part due each day. There is nothing to study for this final. It is a test of close reading and analytical skills, which are the skills you have been developing all year. If you are absent, you will take the portion of the exam you missed on your return. There a few days this week and next built into the schedule for make-up work.
JUNE 13 JUNE 19 2 PERIODS ? POINTS June 13 June 19: ELA Regents Exam Practice REVISION WORK DUE 13 ELA Regents review and prep. Any revisions, corrections, etc, due for credit. 16 ELA Regents review and prep. Any revisions, corrections, etc, due for credit. 17 Optional online review and prep. 18 Optional online review and prep. 19 ELA Regents Exam. Notes: For your last two days of class, you'll zero in on your exam-specific weaknesses to make sure that you are ready for that test on 6/19. Remember that the ELA Regents is required for graduation, but your score on it does not factor into your GPA. You can also use 6/13 and 6/16 to complete and submit any revisions, corrections, or other make-up assignments you have been allowed. That is why the point value for this time frame is variable. Once you've taken the Regents on 6/19, you're done. The summer waits.
