1 ICT in hair and beauty studies principal learning In the hair and beauty studies principal learning students find out about how ICT supports the business and marketing functions of the industry. General ICT applications can also be used to enable students to understand the processes of developing, marketing and selling new products. Level 1 In (Level 1 unit 1) students can use the Internet, DVDs and other ICT-based sources to carry out research about the hair and beauty industry and present information in the form of graphs or charts or presentation software. The customer survey required in (Level 1 unit 2) could be online, or the collected data could be processed using a spreadsheet, offering a further opportunity to incorporate graphs and charts. The communication strategy in (Level 1 unit 2) could involve desktop publishing software to create flyers and posters. There are opportunities in (Level 1 unit 2) and (Level 1 unit 3) to use digital cameras and video devices to film customer opinions and to capture examples of good salon technique. Level 2 Students at level 2 begin to investigate the science of hair and beauty and customer care in the industry. In (Level 2 unit 2) Internet research will help students investigate job roles, training and career paths in the sector. Also in (Level 2 unit 2) students could use spreadsheet software to create tables, graphs and charts illustrating the composition of the market for hair and beauty products. The student needs to understand how to use products safely, including testing them safely, and therefore in (Level 2 unit 3) digital cameras and video devices could be used to film examples of safe practice. The science element of the same unit provides an ICT opportunity for data handling, for example recording test results on the ph value of products. In exploring salon businesses and processes in (Level 2 unit 7), where possible, students should have access to salon specific software. The Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency is the non-regulatory part of the Qualification and Curriculum Authority QCA
2 Levels 1 and 2 at key stage 4 The principal learning contains opportunities to develop the knowledge defined in the key stage 4 ICT programme of study. There are understandably many sector-specific applications of ICT that are not normally found in key stage 4. Teaching implications for levels 1 and 2 To ensure success in the functional skills tests at levels 1 and 2, Diploma students would benefit from opportunities for data-handling using spreadsheets and databases that are not immediately evident in the principal learning. Access to industry-specific software such as booking systems would help enhance the applied nature of the principal learning. Level 3 There is a higher expectation of ICT skills at level 3, including more analysis and evaluation in (Level 3 unit 4), using media applications to match message/image/audience; opportunities to use digital photography in presenting and evaluating a media campaign in (Level 3 unit 5) ; and business and finance handling and developing business plans with financial proposals in (Level 3 unit 7). Teaching implications for level 3 Level 3 students would benefit from chances to use industry-specific software used in hair salons and spas.
