For further information, call the program supervisor at , ext HRPAO Prep Courses for the National Knowledge Exam (NKE) and the Professional Practice Assessment (PPA) The NKE is the first of two national examinations required for certification. It was introduced in 2003 under national standards and assesses the member s knowledge of human resources. A passing grade is 70%. The NKE is written in the spring and fall annually. The second national examination required to meet certification requirements is the Professional Practice Assessment (PPA). This experiential component tests a member s knowledge, judgement and ethics in the context of workplace issues. A passing grade is 70%. Eligibility to write the PPA is based on the student having successfully passed the NKE or the Comprehensive Provincial Examination (CPE) in the last five years. (The CPE is the academic examination under the former provincial route to certification.) The PPA is offered at the same time as the NKE - in the spring and fall annually. The PPA must be written within five years of passing the NKE. It is recommended that the member have at least three to five years practical HR experience before attempting to write the PPA. Students are responsible for ascertaining and satisfying any additional HRPAO requirements associated with qualifying to write the professional exams and obtaining the CHRP designation. NKE and PPA Prep courses focus on critical skills and the Required Professional Capabilities (RPC s) you will need to study in order to pass the CHRP exams. Both prep courses will be facilitated by HR professionals and educators. It is designed to accommodate managers and union members, as well as those with a general interest in labour relations. Participants will develop practical skills through a combination of case studies, role-playing and simulations. Upon completion of the program, you will be able to actively participate in the negotiation of a collective agreement and the resolution of grievances through the various stages of the grievance procedure, including assisting in preparation and presentation of a case in an arbitration hearing. 4 Learning partner The Canadian Payroll Association Certified Payroll Management Program (CPMP) The Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) is the national association representing the payroll community in Canada since The CPA is influential, affecting payroll practices in hundreds of thousands of small, medium and large employers, and payroll service and software providers. The CPA s certification requirements have changed. In January, 2006 the new Certified Payroll Management Program (CPMP) replaced the existing Payroll Management Certification Program (PMCP). The PMCP will continue to be offered through to 2008, in order to allow students to pursue the path that is best for them in terms of their own learning goals and plan. Details of the old program and equivalent Centennial courses are presented below. Please visit the CPA website at for more information about these changes and transition provisions for students who are already working towards CPA designations. TO ENROLL IN CPA COURSES First, register with, and pay tuition fees to, Centennial College and second, register with, and pay a separate fee to the CPA in order to write the final exam and receive professional credit for the course.
