2 Programme Specification BSc (Hons) Information Technology Management for Business This programme specification (PS) is designed for prospective students, enrolled students, academic staff and potential employers. It provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the intended learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if he/she takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided. More detailed information on the teaching, learning and assessment methods, learning outcomes and content for each module can be found in Definitive Module Documents (DMDs) and Module Guides. Programme Rationale The programme is designed to provide ITMB graduates with the knowledge and skills required to work at the interface between the wider organisation and the development, maintenance and operation of the software and IT systems within the organisation. This expertise is required by organisations in general, but is also particularly relevant to employment in the IT industry. The programme blends key aspects of a traditional computer science programme with a strong focus on the application of systems and systems thinking within organisational settings. s the role of the IT professional evolves, graduates require high level technical skills as well as business and project management expertise, and an ability to evaluate available IT solutions. The programme, rather than focus purely on technical skills, recognises that business and project management knowledge and personal and interpersonal skills are equally important as technical skills in today s increasingly global business environment, and with the global development of IT solutions. However, the programme also allows the development of specialist interests in computing or business through a range of optional subjects throughout the programme. The programme focuses on preparing the graduates for a career path relating to the management of IT systems, from the identification of the need for such a system, through design, development, integration and operation of such systems. The typical job roles that the ITMB graduates might apply for include, but are not restricted to: project manager, product manager, business analyst, product owner, IT functional analyst, 2

3 Q/Test analyst, IT support. The programme also provides the graduates with sufficient knowledge and skills for undertaking postgraduate study or entrepreneurial career path. Students are strongly encouraged to undertake industrial placement in their third year in order to supplement the academic knowledge with the experiential learning and to further increase their chances for a graduate employment. The route is recognised in the title of the degree award. The Programme is endorsed by the Tech Partnership UK, which provides many opportunities for students to learn directly from the employers. In addition to that the HBS alumni network and locally based employers contribute actively to the students learning experience and their understanding of the industry employability requirements early in the programme. The staff from the HBS and the School of Computer Science work together on the management of the programme (Programme Leaders) and also within the teaching teams in order to provide the students with the unique and unified experience on the programme, unlike the joint honours programme. The leadership of the programme is sought amongst those staff members who themselves had experience in working in IT industry and understand the importance of aligning the IT curriculum with the needs of the industry. The expectations from the students on the programme are to be active and collaborative learners aiming to excellence in all aspects of their student experience. Most importantly, regardless of their background, the students are encouraged to aim high. The expectations from the staff teaching on the programme, are to embrace the culture of openness and collaboration when working with the colleagues on the programme, and to actively engage with the students on developing their subject expertise and the graduate attributes endorsed by the University of Hertfordshire: professionalism, employability, entrepreneurship, adaptability, intellectual depth and breadth, respect for others, social responsibility, research and life-long learning skills. B. Educational ims of the Programme The programme has been devised in accordance with the University's graduate attributes of programmes of study as set out in UPR TL03. dditionally this programme aims to: Prepare students for a career in the field of information technology management; Provide students with the necessary technical, business and project management skills to design, develop, evaluate and manage IT solutions to business problems: Develop a range of transferable, personal and interpersonal skills both for academic study and a professional career; Enable students to gain knowledge of and understand the issues involved in the development and management of effective IT systems; Develop an appreciation of the social, professional and legal issues involved in the development and management of IT systems; Provide students with work related learning. C. Intended Learning Outcomes The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills and other attributes in the following areas. The programme outcomes are referenced to the Q benchmark statements for General Business and Management (2015) and Computing (2016) and the Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-warding Bodies (2014) and relate to the typical student. dditionally, the SEEC Credit Level Descriptors for Further and Higher Education (2016) have been used as a guiding framework for curriculum design. 3
