Application Note: ZigBee Wireless Light Switch TECHNOLOGY FOR A CHANGING WORLD JN-AN-1024: ZigBee Wireless Light Switch Author: Gary Pfeffer Features The ZigBee wireless light switch application: Uses ZigBee mesh networking for reliable and robust performance Implements the ZigBee Home Controls Lighting (HCL) Profile Uses Simple Binding to link together the light and the switch Introduction This Application Note describes how to use the JN5121-EK010 or JN5139-EK010 evaluation kit to create a ZigBee wireless light switch. The software required to implement the system was developed using the ZigBee protocol stack, available in the Software Developer s Kit (SDK). Application Overview Three sensor boards are used in this application. One is used to start the network. The second sensor board acts as the switch, and the third sensor board acts as the light. After the network has started, Simple Binding is used to link together the switch and the light. Pressing a button on the sensor board programmed as the switch then causes an LED to toggle on and off, on the board programmed as the light. Note: This application is further detailed in the ZigBee Stack User Guide (JN-UG-3017). Network Architecture This demonstration application features examples of all three ZigBee device types: A Coordinator that starts the network, binds together endpoints residing on other devices on the basis of the clusters they possess (this is known both as Indirect Binding and ( End Device Binding ), and then routes data between those endpoints. In a real application the Coordinator would be mains powered. A Router, which runs the light application. In a real application, the Router would be mains powered. An End Device, which runs the switch application. In a real application, the End Device would be battery powered. The network topology is shown below in Figure 1. It is also possible to include additional Router nodes. If necessary, the ZigBee mesh network will automatically use these to route data when either the light or the switch cannot communicate directly with the Coordinator. JN-AN-1024 (v1.6) 24-May
ZigBee Wireless Light Switch Zigbee Coordinator Switch (ZigBee End Device) Light (ZigBee Router) Figure 1: Wireless Light Switch System Coordinator Board Operation On the board that is programmed as the Coordinator, the software performs the following actions: Starts the device as a ZigBee Coordinator, using channel 19 Illuminates LED1 when the device is first powered up, and extinguishes it once the network has been successfully started (this should occur very quickly). All of the functions associated with acting as a ZigBee Coordinator (such as allowing other devices to join the network, allocating addresses to those devices, binding endpoints on other nodes and relaying data) are performed automatically by the ZigBee protocol stack and are completely transparent to the user. This allows the user s application code to be made as simple as possible. Light Board Operation On the board that is programmed as the light, and which functions as a ZigBee Router, the software performs the following functions: Searches for a network and requests to join it Sends a request to the Coordinator for End Device Binding when SW1 is pressed Once bound, it turns LED2 on or off when the appropriate command is received from the switch node. Both LEDs are illuminated when the device first powers up. Once the device has successfully joined a network, LED1 is extinguished. Then, once the light is successfully bound to a switch node, LED 2 is extinguished. After this, it can subsequently be toggled on and off by the switch node JN-AN-1024 (v1.6) 24-May-2007
ZigBee Wireless Light Switch Switch Board Operation On the board that is programmed as the switch, and which functions as a ZigBee End Device, the software performs the following functions: Searches for a network and requests to join it Sends a request to the Coordinator for End Device Binding when SW1 is pressed Once bound, it sends On or Off commands to the light node each time SW2 is pressed, toggling the command each time. Both LEDs are illuminated when the device first powers up. Once the device has successfully joined a network, LED1 is extinguished. Then, once the switch is successfully bound to a light node, LED2 is extinguished. Binding The application uses Simple Binding to link the light and the switch together via the Coordinator. This involves pressing SW1 on both the light node, and the switch node within five seconds of each other, in order to send End Device Binding requests to the Coordinator. When the ZigBee protocol stack on the Coordinator receives the two requests for End Device Binding it attempts to match them together. If successful, it adds them to its binding table. Matching is done between endpoints with identical input and output clusters. In this case, the light has an input cluster with the Switch_Remote_Control ID number, as specified in the ZigBee Home Controls Lighting (HCL) Profile. The switch has an output cluster with the same cluster ID. Therefore, when the Coordinator receives the two binding requests, it will match them together If two more requests are then received by the Coordinator, for the same two endpoints, the entry is removed from the binding table. Once a pair of endpoints is bound, data may be sent from either node without a destination address. The packets are automatically sent to the Coordinator, which then consults the binding table to find the destination and relays the data to that address. Software The software for both the controller and sensor boards is supplied with this document when downloaded from the Support web site. The download also contains the makefile and Code::Blocks project files that can be used to build the applications. JN-AN-1024 (v1.6) 24-May
Building and Downloading the Application ZigBee Wireless Light Switch Important: In order to build the software provided with this Application Note, the application s folder must be placed directly under: C:\\cygwin\jennic\SDK\Application\. This directory is automatically created when you install the latest Software Developer s Kit (SDK). If you are using an older version which does not use this directory, you must upgrade the SDK before building the Application Note software. You can obtain the latest version of the SDK from the Support area of the web site ( The relevant part code is JN-SW-4026 or JN-SW-4027, depending on your chosen development environment (IDE or CLI). Note: In the procedure below, you will be required to build for a specific device type. Your chip type is marked on the chip or module. JN5139R1 refers to the JN5139 chip, while JN5139R refers to an early version of this chip. To build and download the application, follow the instructions below: 1. Ensure that the project directory is located in <JENNIC_SDK_ROOT>\cygwin\jennic\SDK\Application\ where <JENNIC_SDK_ROOT> is the path into which the SDK was installed (by default, this is C:\). 2. Build the applications using either the supplied makefile (located in the Build directory) or the supplied Code::Blocks project files. In either case, you must build for a specific device type (JN5121 or JN513x): a) If using the makefile, you can specify the target device type on the command line. For example, to build the code for the JN5139 device, enter: make f Makefile.mk JENNIC_CHIP=JN5139R1 b) If using Code::Blocks, use the project files prefixed with the appropriate device type. Note that the Code::Blocks files are designed to be used only with s version of the Code::Blocks IDE. 3. Download the resulting binary files to the three sensor boards: a) Download JN51xx_NullCoordinator.bin to the board you wish to be the Coordinator b) Download JN51xx_Light.bin to the board you wish to be the light c) Download JN51xx_Switch.bin to the board you wish to be the switch. You can do this using the JN51xx Flash Programmer application or directly from Code::Blocks (if you have installed the integrated Flash programmer). Caution: If problems occur when using your current Code::Blocks version, download the latest version along with the latest version of this Application Note from the Support area of the web site ( JN-AN-1024 (v1.6) 24-May-2007
ZigBee Wireless Light Switch Instructions for Use 1. Turns all three boards off and then on again to start their programs running. LED1 will illuminate on all three boards. On the light and the switch, LED1 will then extinguish within a few seconds. On the Coordinator LED1 will extinguish almost immediately. 2. LED2 on both the light and the switch boards should be illuminated. Press SW1 on both the boards at the same time. 3. After a couple of seconds, LED2 should extinguish on both boards. If this does not happen, turn both boards off and then on, wait for LED1 to extinguish, and perform Step 4 again. 4. Once LED2 has extinguished on both boards, pressing SW2 on the switch board will cause LED2 on the light board to turn on or off. JN-AN-1024 (v1.6) 24-May
