1 Introduction The JN5121-EK000 Evaluation Kit consists of: One controller with an LCD panel, a temperature sensor, humidity sensor and light sensor, four control buttons and four LEDs Four sensor boards, each with a temperature sensor, humidity sensor and light sensor, two control buttons and two LEDs. The kit is supplied with the software to allow the units in the kit to emulate a home automation control system, known as the JN5121-EK000 Demonstration Application. The controller enables each sensor board to be monitored, and allows alarms to be set for temperature and light levels on the sensor boards. The controller can be set to operate on a specific channel to avoid interference on busy frequencies, and the sensor boards automatically scan for the controller and synchronise with it. 4 Jennic 2006 JN-UG-3001 v1.2
2 Operating instructions 2.1 Central controller The central controller has several modes: Introductory splash, with channel selection Network display Individual node display Individual node control The modes are accessed by pressing buttons on the controller, with the hierarchy of s as shown below Button conventions The switches on the controller board are used to allow the user to navigate around a menu system, and change their function depending on which is being shown. On all s the function of a particular switch is displayed on the bottom of the LCD above the switch position. JN-UG-3001 v1.2 Jennic
Start Press leftmost and rightmost button simultaneously from any Miscellaneous setup 'Ch x' key Introductory/ channel select 'Done' key 'Done' key 'Node' key Network Node 1 display 'Node' key Node 2 display 'Node' key Node x display 'Node' key 'Control' key 'Control' key 'Control' key 'Done' key 'Done' key 'Done' key Node 1 control Node 2 control Node x control Figure 1 Controller Screen Flow Diagram Introductory This allows the operating channel to be set. Press + or - to adjust the channel number up or down. When the value reaches the top or bottom of the range (11 to 26) it wraps around. The initial value is 18. When the desired channel has been selected, press Done for the channel to be programmed into the hardware and to move to the Network. Alternatively, press Ch x to go to the Miscellaneous Settings. The introductory can be returned to at any time by pressing the leftmost and rightmost keys at the same time. 6 Jennic 2006 JN-UG-3001 v1.2
2.1.3 Miscellaneous Settings This is for non-standard configuration of the system. Options are as follows: Name Possible values Default Local node off, on on Four nodes off, on on The currently selected item is highlighted by the text for that item being inverted. To move between the two options, the Select button should be pressed. To alter a value for the selected option, the + and - buttons can be used. Local node allows the central controller to appear as an end device on the Network and Node Display s. If Local node is set to off, it is possible to associate up to four sensor boards with the controller, and all displayed nodes will be sensor boards. If Local node is set to on, the central controller acts as the first node and up to three sensor boards can be associated as additional nodes. Four nodes toggles the system between displaying three or four nodes on the Network overview. When only three nodes are selected, the network shows the text Network overview in place of one node as an aid to navigation. As well as the above options, this shows the version numbers for the Stack Library and Hardware Peripheral Library. After all settings have been completed, press Done to move to the Network Network This shows the current value and trend graph for one sensor type for all sensor boards simultaneously. It is possible to choose the sensor type to display by pressing the Temp, Humidity or Light buttons, and the currently selected sensor type is indicated by the button label for that sensor being inverted. As well as the value and graph, any triggered alarms are displayed with the text High or Low, in the space beneath the room name. If no alarms have been triggered, this space is used to display the link quality value for that sensor board 1 and the number of expected frames that have been missed. This information will not be displayed for the local node as it is not applicable. To select a Node Display, the Node button should be pressed. If there are no nodes (i.e. the controller has been configured to Local node as off and no sensor boards have associated yet) the Node button has no effect. 1 Link quality gives a broad indication of the quality of the communication. The value is between 0 for a very bad connection and 255 for an ideal connection. The value is affected both by the number of errors seen and the signal strength, which in turn depends on the environment and the proximity of the devices. JN-UG-3001 v1.2 Jennic
2.1.5 Node Display This shows the current value and trend graph for all sensors simultaneously for one sensor board at a time. The format is the same as for the Network. This also displays the link quality and number of frames that have been missed. To select another sensor board, the Node button should be pressed. When the final sensor board is displayed, pressing the Node button again causes the Network to appear. Pressing the Control button causes the Node Control associated with the currently displayed sensor board to appear (see 2.1.6). Pressing On or Off controls the remote switch at the sensor board as described in 2.2.2, unless the node is the central controller itself, in which case this option has no effect Node Control This allows alarms and a remote switch to be set for a sensor board. The currently selected item is highlighted by the text for that item being inverted. To move from one item to the next, the Select button should be pressed. When the last item has been selected, a subsequent press of the Select button causes the first item to be selected again. To alter a numeric value, the + and - buttons can be used. When the value reaches the top or bottom of the range it wraps around via an off setting. When all items are satisfactory, the Done button should be pressed to return to the Node Display associated with the sensor board. 2.2 Sensor Board The sensor board has two switches (marked SW1 and SW2) and two LEDs (D1 and D2). With the JN5121-MO00x module uppermost the leftmost switch is SW1 and the rightmost SW2. The LED D1 is the leftmost LED, D2 the rightmost. A sensor board will be in one of two modes: Synchronising Operating Synchronising mode When a sensor board is switched on, it automatically enters synchronising mode. It will also return to this mode if it loses synchronisation with the controller. First the sensor board performs a channel scan. It repeatedly tries until it finds the channel on which the controller is operating. The board then synchronises with the controller and associates with it. Again, this will be repeated until successful. During initial association the sensor board is assigned a role by the controller. The roles are given in the order in which each board associates, in the order Hall, Bedroom, Lounge and Bathroom. If the controller is not being used as a node ( Local node option in controller is off), the first sensor board to associate will be assigned Hall, the second Bedroom, and so on. If the 8 Jennic 2006 JN-UG-3001 v1.2
controller is being used as a node it will assign Hall to itself, so the first sensor board will become Bedroom, the next Lounge, and so on. After a first successful association, the controller remembers the role it assigned to a particular sensor board so if that sensor board loses synchronisation and has to re-associate, it will be assigned the same role again. Once associated, the sensor board moves into operating mode Operating mode Whilst in operating mode, the sensor board responds to every beacon from the controller by sending back a frame containing the values of the sensors. The controller can then display this information. LED D1 is controlled by the remote switch setting on the Node Control on the controller (see 2.1.6). LED D2 is set to a steady state depending on the light level at the sensor board and the setting of the low light level alarm from the Node Control on the controller (see 2.1.6). LED D2 is illuminated when the light level drops below the low alarm level and the alarm is set. There is a switch emulation performed by the sensor board. This has no visible effect at the sensor board but an LED will be lit or dimmed at the controller. Pressing SW1 turns the LED on and pressing SW2 turns it off. Note that each sensor is only read once per second in operating mode, and not at all if communication with the controller is lost. JN-UG-3001 v1.2 Jennic
