Broadband Access Research at Clemson (and the role of HCC in the research) Dr. Jim Martin Associate Professor School of Computing Clemson University Networking Lab s Website: Slides last updated 12/17/2013 1

Research Group s Mission Vision Statement: Computing and the Internet are converging Traditional broadcast video (Cable/Satellite) is converging with the Internet Networks are becoming more and more heterogeneous Wireless is the dominant last hop technology The scope of the lab s interests is more than networking, it includes operating systems, distributed systems, secure and trustworthy systems, and next generation Internet. Collectively these define the term cybersystems 2

Research Group s Mission The networking group focuses on a range of problems that are at the heart of developing and analyzing emerging cybersystems. The mission of the lab is to support cutting edge research in cybersystems AND to train researchers to address the needs of the changing world. Funding Team Department of Justice/National Institute of Justice, CableLabs, Cisco, Comcast, IBM, NASA Collaborators: Amy Apon, Richard Brooks, Brian Dean, Juan Gilbert, Harlan Russell,, KC Wang, Mike Westall Students: Rahul Amin, Yunhui Fu, Gongbing Hong, and many others. 3

NETLAB Activities Research Pedagogy Outreach Wireless Systems Broadband Access Internet Protocols and Issues Networking and Systems Course Development VM-based labs CyberTiger Creative Inquiry Networking Seminar AccessComputing: promote CS as a profession to students with disabilities Emerging Scholars Broadband Service Website Statewide Broadband Wireless Initiatives Public Safety Testbeds and Experimental Deployments Campus SDN, Hadoop/SDN, GENI/WiMAX, Campus wireless, Internet streaming testbed, Football stadium testbed, SciWiNet 4

CyberSystems Research CyberInfrastructure: The hardware/software systems that operate harmoniously to meet the requirements of domain specific applications and systems. CI includes operating systems, networks, distributed systems, secure and trustworthy systems, HPC. Application Domain (e.g., connected vehicle) System Performance Trustworthy computing CyberInfrastructure Computational Theory Algorithms Software Engineering

CyberSystems Research Highlights DOCSIS 3.1 : Developing AQM techniques to address bufferbloat (CoDel and PIE sufficient?) Developing bandwidth management methods for a 1 Gbps all IP pipe: Dilemma : what comes first: 300 Mbps service rates or applications that require 300 Mbps? Internet video streaming: Streaming over the Internet now involves various forms of adaptive streaming over HTTP. Research is just beginning.but the consensus is that things are broken!! Building Cooperative Heterogeneous Wireless Networks With Re-Configurable Devices: how to support smartphones in the home that intelligently use all access networks. Last hop access through TV White Space. Cable/fiber delivers a Gbps pipe to the home, af wireless distribution Science Wireless Network (SciWiNet): We are a cellular operator providing 3G/4G data services to support academic research out in the wild 6

CyberSystems Research Something is missing???? Application Domain (e.g., connected vehicle) System Performance Trustworthy computing CyberInfrastructure Computational Theory Algorithms Software Engineering

CyberSystems Research Human Factors!!!! Application Domain (e.g., connected vehicle) System Performance Trustworthy computing CyberInfrastructure Computational Theory Algorithms Software Engineering

CyberSystems Research: Considering HCC Bandwidth Consumption (Mbps) Netflix streaming session over a 10 Mbps link: Ideal (uncongested, unimpaired) during first 600 seconds Competing FTP throughput next 600 seconds Back to Ideal last 600 seconds Observations Internet fairness would have netflix stay at 4 Mbps and the FTP flow move to 6 Mbps This result is due to several issues: TCP strangeness Netflix deciding to voluntarily give up bandwidth Question : Is the adaptation algorithm doing the right thing? iperf: Mean: bps Std: bps 2.0 second samples 50 second samples Netflix: Mean: bps Std: bps Time (seconds) a. Measurement Result: Competing iperf flow seconds 9

CyberSystems : Considering HCC DOCSIS 3.1 : How to translate traditional network measurables into human perceived quality metrics? Internet video streaming: Streaming over the Internet now involves various forms of adaptive streaming over HTTP. Is it possible to reliably adapt a decision algorithm to provide predictable perceived quality? An alternative might be to define a network service that rewards applications that behave in a manner that perform application congestion control Building Cooperative Heterogeneous Wireless Networks With Re-Configurable Devices The academic goal is to expose control knobs that allow a provider to determine system operating point: conflicting tradeoff: spectral efficiency, fairness, energy consumption. 10

Conclusions Advances in broadband technology now requires significant change at the application/network interface layer: Wireless is the norm. Applications must be tolerant of network handoffs and must be disruption tolerant Application adaptation is happening, networks should provide supportive services Network adaptation (SDN) is an enabling technology (maybe?) Human Centered Computing touches this space in several ways Understanding expected human behaviors is necessary to provide intelligent systems Perceived quality trumps network quality measures HCC coupled with economics is an interesting path forward 11

Additional Material 12

Smart Home Network Sensor Net Current home environments are not too far from this today!! Wired Network WiFi This shaded cloud is where broadband service providers such as Comcast and AT&T would like to evolve towards (a true service provider not just a network provider) 3G/4G Cellular Data Service (e.g., Verizon or AT&T) Wired Access (e.g., Cable, DSL, Fiber) Satellite Access The science behind this work is in the area of resource allocation and systems performance Video Entertainment (YouTube, Netflix Hulu, ) Internet Web, Cloud applications Power Company s Smart Grid Support Wireless Heterogeneous Networks (aka hetnets) extend application domains over a wireless Internet Driven by emerging application domains such as Intelligent Transportation System, Environmental Sensing, SmartGrid, health care, mobile broadband wireless,. Challenge #1 : Cooperative networks are COMPLICATED Challenge #2 : Cooperative networks BREAK current ISP economic models Challenge #3 : The current method for spectrum management is OUTDATED Challenge #4 : Pushes the original TCP/IP design BEYOND its capabilities

Building Cooperative Heterogeneous Wireless Networks With Re-Configurable Devices Future handhelds will contain multiple radios that can be used concurrently AND that are reconfigurable. Future wireless networks will be heterogeneous with cooperative mechanisms in place (early examples are femtocells and WiFi off loading) Autonomous Wireless Systems Open Spectrum Access Network Exit Internet SmartPhone Global Resource Controller 14

SciWiNet The Science Wireless Network (SciWiNet) Internet Geni WiMAX Research Community NIH Research DOE Research DOT/ITS Research Public Safety/ Homeland Security

SciWiNet Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) : A wireless service operator that does not own infrastructure The FCC defines MVNOs as companies that purchase airtime from facilitiesbased providers and then resell that service to the public for profit. The Mobile Network Operator (MNO) is likely to compete with the MVNO for customers MVNO services are generally lower cost, presumably a different set of customers. Some MVNO s are verticals (very specific users) Sprint (MNO) Internet Arterra / SciWiNet (DATA ONLY- no voice/text) Sprint is our MNO SciWiNet (+ partner Arterra) Provide the store to purchase devices and airtime Arterra provides the admin interface that allows users and devices to be managed To the FCC, they are the MVNO MVNO Example: Walmart resells T-Mobile services through Straight Talk 16

Research Objectives Evaluate the efficacy of a testbed for the academic research community. Make available the testbed to the GENI research community with a limited amount of integration. Make available the testbed to a controlled set of non-geni researchers. Pave the way for perhaps an independent MVNO that uses multiple Wireless Network Operators (Internet2 eventually becomes the MVNO, a startup MVNO is created,???). 17

Intellectual Merit Develops the concept, determines the underlying requirements of the research community. Determines how effectively a public/private partnership might serve to create a national scientific resource. Additional intellectual merit is derived by the contributions of the separate research projects that utilize the MVNO. 18
