CHAPTER 1 Overview of the Granite Appliance This chapter provides an overview of the Granite Core appliance. It includes the following sections: Introducing Granite Core and Virtual Branch Storage on page 7 Hardware Requirements on page 10 Qualified iscsi SAN Vendors on page 10 Introducing Granite Core and Virtual Branch Storage Riverbed Granite provides Edge Virtual Server Infrastructure (Edge-VSI). Edge-VSI enables the best of all worlds: 100% consolidated data and applications that deliver LAN performance at the edge over the WAN. This eliminates the need for dedicated storage, including management and related backup resources, at the branch office. With Granite, storage administrators can extend a data center SAN to a remote location, even over a low bandwidth link. Granite delivers business agility, enabling companies to effectively deliver global storage infrastructure anywhere it is needed. Note: Granite functionality in Steelhead EX requires RiOS Granite provides the functionality: Innovative block-storage optimization ensures that data is centrally managed yet always available to support business operations in the branch even in the event of a WAN outage. A local authoritative cache ensures LAN-speed reads and fast cold writes at the branch. Integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service enables consistent point-in-time data snapshots and seamless integration with backup applications. Integration with industry-standard Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) authenticates users and hosts. A secure vault protects sensitive information using AES 256-bit encryption. Leverages solid state disks (SSDs) to guarantee data durability and performance. Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide 7

Overview of the Granite Appliance Introducing Granite Core and Virtual Branch Storage An active-active high availability (HA) deployment option for Granite ensures LUN availability for remote sites. Customizable reports provide visibility to key utilization, performance, and diagnostic information. In brief, by consolidating all storage at the data center and creating diskless branches, Granite eliminates data sprawl, costly data replication, and the risk of data loss at the branch office. How Granite Works Granite is designed to enable edge server systems to efficiently access storage arrays over the WAN. Granite is a dual-ended system with Granite Core at the data center and a Granite-enabled Steelhead EX appliance ( Granite Edge ) at the edge. The edge server connects to the Granite Edge appliance, which implements handlers for the iscsi protocol. The Granite Edge appliance also connects to the blockstore, a persistent local cache of storage blocks. When the edge server requests blocks, those blocks are served locally from the blockstore (unless they are not present, in which case they are requested from the data center LUN). Similarly, newly written blocks are spooled to the local cache, acknowledged to the edge server, and then asynchronously propagated to the data center. Because each Granite Edge appliance implementation is linked to a dedicated LUN at the data center, the blockstore is authoritative for both reads and writes, and can tolerate WAN outages without worrying about cache coherency. Blocks are communicated between Granite Edge appliance s and Granite Core and the data center LUN via an internal protocol. (Optionally, this traffic can be further optimized by Steelheads for improved performance.) Granite initially populates the blockstore in several possible ways: Reactive prefetch - The system observes block requests, applies heuristics based on these observations to intelligently predict the blocks most likely to be requested in the near future, and then requests those blocks from the data center LUN in advance. Policy-based prefetch - Configured policies identify the set of blocks that are likely to be requested at a given edge site in advance, and then requests those blocks from the data center LUN in advance. First request - Blocks are added to the blockstore when first requested. Because the first request is cold, it is subject to standard WAN latency. System Architecture At the data center, Granite Core integrates with existing storage systems and Riverbed Steelhead implementations. Granite Core connects dedicated LUNs with each Granite Edge appliance at the edge or branch office. Each Granite Edge appliance contains a blockstore that mirrors the datastore LUN. As a result, the blockstore eliminates the need for separate block storage facilities at the branch office, as well as all the associated maintenance, tools, backup services, hardware, service resources, and so on. 8 Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide

Introducing Granite Core and Virtual Branch Storage Overview of the Granite Appliance The following diagram illustrates a generic deployment. Figure 1-1. Generic Granite Deployment The basic system components are: Microsoft Windows Edge Server - The branch-side server that accesses data from the Granite system instead of a local storage device. Blockstore - The blockstore is a persistent local cache of storage blocks. Because each Granite Edge appliance is linked to a dedicated LUN at the data center, the blockstore is generally authoritative for both reads and writes. In the above diagram, the blockstore on the branch side synchs with LUN1 at the data center. iscsi Initiator - The iscsi initiator is the branch-side client that sends SCSI commands to the iscsi target at the data center. Granite-enabled Steelhead EX appliance - Also referred to as a Granite Edge appliance, the branchside component of the Granite system links the edge server to the blockstore and links the blockstore to the iscsi target and LUN at the data center. The Steelhead provides general optimization services. Data Center Steelhead appliance - The data center-side Steelhead peer for general optimization. Granite Core - The data center component of the Granite system. Granite Core manages block transfers between the LUN and the Granite Edge appliance. iscsi Target - The data center-side server that communicates with the branch-side iscsi initiator. LUNs - Each Granite Edge appliance requires a dedicated LUN in the data center storage configuration. Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide 9

APPENDIX A Installing Virtual Granite Core This chapter describes how to install and configure the Virtual Granite Core. It includes the following sections: Overview of the Virtual Granite Core on page 47 Hardware and Software Requirements on page 48 Basic Steps for Installing and Configuring Virtual Granite Core for ESX on page 49 Obtaining the Virtual Granite Core Virtual Machine Image on page 50 Gathering Information on page 50 Opening the vsphere Client on page 50 Logging in to the Virtual Granite Core on page 52 Purchasing the Token and Receiving the Licenses on page 53 This guide assumes that you are familiar with installing, configuring, and managing networks with deployed Steelhead appliances. For detailed information about the Steelhead appliance, see the Steelhead Appliance Installation and Configuration Guide, the Steelhead Management Console User s Guide, and the Steelhead Appliance Deployment Guide. Overview of the Virtual Granite Core The Virtual Granite Core is a virtualized edition of the Granite Core appliance that runs on VMware ESX and ESXi v4.1. The Virtual Granite Core has the same functionality and performance as the Granite Core appliance, depending on how you provision your virtual machine. Virtual Granite Core is supported on VMware ESX and ESXi v4.1. The VMware ESX and ESXi are virtualization platforms that enable you to install and run the Virtual Granite Core as a virtual appliance. For details about VMware ESX and ESXi, see The hardware must support virtual technology. To ensure hardware compatibility, see Note: Virtual machine snapshots are not supported by Virtual Steelhead appliance for ESX. Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide 47

Installing Virtual Granite Core Hardware and Software Requirements Hardware and Software Requirements This section describes the hardware and software requirements for installing and running the Virtual Granite Core appliance. It describes the following: Hardware Requirements on page 48 Recommendations for Optimal Performance on page 48 Hardware Requirements It is important to know the number of branches you plan to support before you allocate resources for your Virtual Granite Core installation. The table below lists the resource Riverbed recommends for the indicated maximum number of branches. Figure Hardware Requirements Model Memory Disk Space Recommended CPU Data Set Size Branches VGC-1000-UL 2 GB 25 GB 2.2 GHz 2 TB 5 VGC-1000-L 4 GB 25 GB 2.2 GHz 5 TB 10 VGC-1000-M 8 GB 25 GB 2.2 GHz 10 TB 20 Recommendations for Optimal Performance Virtual machine configuration is central to Virtual Granite Core performance. Follow these tips for best results: Use a Gigabit link for the Aux interface - For optimal performance, connect the Aux virtual interfaces to physical interfaces that are have a capacity of at least one Gbps. Do not share physical NICs - Assign a physical NIC to a single Aux interface. Do not share physical NICs destined for other virtual interfaces with other VMs running on the ESX host, or bottlenecks might result. Always reserve virtual CPU cycles - For best performance, it is important that the Virtual Granite Core receive sufficient CPU resources. This can be enforced by reserving the number of virtual CPUs that the model is supposed to function with. Also remember to reserve the number of clock cycles in terms of CPU MHz; for example, for a model VGC-1000-UL installed on a quad core (Xeon based system running at 2.6 GHz), you would reserve two vcpus and 2.6 GHz CPU cycles using vsphere. Do not over-provision the physical CPUs - Do not run more virtual machines than there are CPUs. For example, if an ESX host is running on a 4-core CPU, all the virtual machines on the host should use not more than four virtual CPUs. Use a server-grade CPU for the ESX host - Riverbed recommends Xeon or Opteron. Always reserve RAM - Memory is another very important factor in determining Virtual Granite Core performance. For details, see Hardware Requirements on page 48. Do not over-provision physical RAM - The total virtual RAM needed by all running VMs should not be greater than the physical RAM on the system. Do not use low-quality storage - Make sure that the Virtual Granite Core disk used for the VMDK is located on a physical disk medium that supports a high number of I/O operations per second (IOPS). For example, use NAS, SAN, or dedicated SATA disks. 48 Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide

Installing Virtual Granite Core Obtaining the Virtual Granite Core Virtual Machine Image Obtaining the Virtual Granite Core Virtual Machine Image The Virtual Granite Core is provided by Riverbed as an image that contains the VMX and VMDK files necessary to create the virtual machine. The Virtual Granite Core image is an installable open virtual appliance (OVA) package. OVA is a platformindependent, efficient, extensible, and open packaging distribution format. The OVA package provides a complete specification for Virtual Granite Core for ESX, including its required virtual disks, CPU, memory, networking, and storage. The OVA file is a compressed.tar package that quickly creates a virtual machine with predefined settings. It contains the following files: OVF file - The XML description of the Virtual Granite Core. VMDK file - This contains the management system. Manifest file - The checksum of the OVF and VMDK. VMX file - The primary configuration; this is created when the OVA is deployed. To obtain the OVA package, log in to your customer account at Gathering Information Before you begin, read the release notes for the product at They contain important information about this release. Next, gather the following information: host name domain name IP address DNS server interface IP addresses netmask default gateway Opening the vsphere Client Each package contains a predefined virtual hardware configuration for a Virtual Granite Core. Do not open or modify any of the files in the package. The package files require approximately 25 GBs of disk space. Installation procedures vary depending on whether you are using the VMware VI or vsphere Client. The examples in this document are created using vsphere. The Virtual Granite Core on ESX is provided by Riverbed as an OVA file 4.1 and newer systems. 50 Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide

Opening the vsphere Client Installing Virtual Granite Core Deploying the OVF Template This section describes how to install and configure the default Virtual Granite Core on a VMware ESX host using the vsphere client. The standard installation puts both VMDKs in a single local storage location. The local storage holds the virtual machine files and is referred to as a datastore during OVF deployment, but it is not used for the Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS) datastore, which is used for network optimization. Make sure the datastore you select has enough capacity for the OVA package to be installed. You need at least 25 GB. The larger VMDK containing the management system can be installed on any datastore type. The smaller VMDK contains the Virtual Granite Core statistics. The datastore must have enough room to expand to the required size of the Virtual Granite Core. Do not share host physical disks (such as SCSI or SATA disks) between VMs. To deploy the OVA template 1. Open VMware vsphere, type the hostname IP address or name, type your user name, password, and click Login. 2. Choose File > Deploy OVF template. 3. Click Deploy from file, and Browse. 4. Select the OVA file (filename ending in.ova), and click Open. 5. Click Next. 6. Verify that the OVA file is the one you want to deploy. 7. Click Next. 8. Type a name for the virtual machine. 9. Click Next. 10. Select Thick provisioned format unless you have a specific reason for requiring thin provisioning. 11. Click Next. 12. Select the destination network name and select a network from the drop-down list to map the source network to a destination network. Set Primary to Aux and Aux to primary. 13. Click Next. 14. Verify the deployment settings and click Finish. A message shows the amount of time before the deployment is finished. When the deployment finishes, a message tells you the deployment was successful. You can edit disk size and provisioning settings later by right-clicking the name of your virtual machine. 15. Click Close. The new virtual machine appears under the hostname or host IP address to the virtual machine inventory. Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide 51

Installing Virtual Granite Core Logging in to the Virtual Granite Core Logging in to the Virtual Granite Core This section describes how to log in to the Virtual Granite Core. You can connect to the Virtual Granite Core through any supported Web browser. To connect to the Virtual Granite Core you must know the host, domain, and administrator password that you assigned during the initial setup. Note: Cookies and JavaScript must be enabled in your browser. To log in to the Virtual Granite Core 1. Enter the URL for the Virtual Granite Core in the location box of your browser: protocol://host.domain Where: protocol is http or https. The secure HTTPS uses SSL protocol to ensure a secure environment. If you use HTTPS to connect, you are prompted to inspect and verify the SSL key. host is the IP address or hostname you assigned to the Virtual Granite Core during the initial configuration. If your DNS server maps the IP address to a name, you can specify the DNS name. domain is the full domain name for the Virtual Granite Core. The Virtual Granite Core interface appears, displaying the Login page. 2. In the Username text box, the default account admin appears. You must specify the account admin when you first log in. Optionally, at a later time, you can configure the monitor user name, RADIUS users, or TACACS+ users. For detailed information, see the Granite Core Management Console Users Guide. 3. In the Password text box, type the password you assigned in the Virtual Granite Core configuration wizard. 4. Click Log In to log in and display the Home page. 52 Granite Core Installation and Configuration Guide

Purchasing the Token and Receiving the Licenses Installing Virtual Granite Core Purchasing the Token and Receiving the Licenses Before you can add licenses to a Virtual Granite Core, you must first purchase a token from Riverbed. The token has a model number assigned to the new Virtual Granite Core after you complete its licensing. To view your purchased token, log in to your account at Note: For details about licensing, see Managing Riverbed Licenses on page 11. After you receive a token you are ready to install the licenses. To activate the token and install the license 1. Log in to the Virtual Granite Core. 2. Choose Setup > Licenses to display the Licenses page. 3. Under License Request Token, type the token and click Generate License Request Key. When you enter the token, RiOS returns a license request key. 4. After you have obtained the license request key, go to the Riverbed Licensing Portal at licensing.riverbed.com (nonregistered users) or to the Riverbed Support site at support.riverbed.com/account/tokens/ (registered users) to generate your license keys. The license keys include the GCBASE license as well as any other licenses needed for the Virtual Granite Core model. The Licensing Portal is a public web site; the Riverbed Support web site requires registration. After your licenses are generated, they appear online and are also ed to you for reference. 5. Copy and paste the license key into the text box. Separate multiple license keys with a Space, Tab, or Enter. 6. Click Add License(s). The Virtual Granite Core status should change to Healthy, indicated in green, a few seconds after you add the GCBASE and Model GCMSPECV licenses. 7.
