1 BACKGROUND SENSOR NETWORKS Elisa Schaeffer, D.Sc. (Tech.) IT & Software, CIIDIT, UANL ITESM Campus MTY, October 9, 2009 SENSOR A component (typically electronic, mechanic and/or chemical) that observes and measures the magnitude of a certain phenomenon of interest in its environment Practically all modern engineering applications require the integratio of control and computation. These two aspects, together with communication, enter directly in contact with the physical environment to materialize a vision of ambient intelligence. SENSOR NODE An electronic device equipped with one or more sensors. Consists in a processor and memory of limited capacity for the recollection and simple processing simple of observed data. Typically include a communication unit to transmit data from the device either upon request or in real time.
2 SENSOR NETWORKS WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS Advantages of deploying multiple sensor nodes: greater precision of and confidence in the data when readings of several sensors are combined, improved coverage better fault tolerance due to redundancy Problematics of mass deployment: design of the topology of the network the routing protocol for multihop communications Advantage: ease of deployment, particularly in regions that are difficult to access Problematics introduced by the use of wireless units: the source of energy also needs to be wireless interference in radio communication Sensor node Sensing range

5 MOBILE SENSOR NETWORKS Base range Advantages: improved adaptability of the system improved coverage with less redundancy Problematics introduced by mobility: topology optimization routing protocol to incorporate mobility APPLICATIONS SIMULATION Environmental Scientific Military Medical Household For topology design and routing protocol optimization, an ideal tool for the conceptual phase is computer simulation of the behavior of the sensor network. With my students, we have implemented in ANSI-C and Java programming languages topology generators and operational simulators of sensor networks, with or without real-time visualization. Posterior to simulation, a real-world application requires necessarily a prototype phase with extensive experiments.
