3 1 General This Release Notice is a summary of the major extensions, requirements and operating information for the HNC software V2.0A. The release level is that of April This Release Notice is supplied on the product DVD. This and other current release notices are available on the SoftBooks DVD and online under Ordering The HNC V2.0A software is supplied as part of the HNC-IV and HNC-V hardware and does not have to be ordered separately. 4 2 Software extensions Only the extensions and enhancements over the previous version HNC V1.1A are described below. Link aggregation: In conjunction with opennet Server V3.4 (BCAM V21) this permits the simultaneous use of several even virtual channel connections to the BS2000/OSD server (cable bundles). This in turn enables the load to be distributed, and thus an increase in throughput. Checksum Offloading: The HNC calculates and checks the TCP checksum for outgoing and incoming data packages. This computing-intensive TCP protocol function is moved to the HNC as of opennet Server V3.4 (BCAM V21) and notably relieves the load on the BS2000 CPU. Graphic interface: The web interface has been adapted to that of the SQ servers and as a result role-specific user profiles are supported. Password protection: The passwords of the user profiles are backed up automatically and the backup can then be used by Service for a restore. Teleservice: Service access is now realized between HNC and SKP x or x via a separate service LAN. This can be used to diagnose the HNC, as well as to reset and switch it on/off. Thus the obsolete V.24 connection can be omitted. Page 2

5 3 Technical information 3.1 Software requirements FibreChannel support: opennet Server as of V3.1 is required in order to use the FibreChannel connection. VLAN: VLAN support by BCAM is available for the first time with opennet Server V3.2 (BCAM V19). Information about mixed configurations during redundancy operation: Mixed operation between the trunk -orientated VLAN solution of HNC-IIIR and the new VLAN solution (BCAM V19) in HNC-IV and HNC-V is not possible in a redundancy configuration. Link Aggregation and Checksum Offloading The link aggregation and checksum offloading functions are only available together with opennet Server as of V Product installation The software is supplied preinstalled with the HNC hardware delivery. Any required new correction levels are supplied via SOLIS. Your local service technician is responsible for installing these correction levels. The software configuration can be displayed via the menu item HNC Management of the web interface. When employing FC connections both HNC models are connected either via an FC switch with or without the autonegotiation function or directly to the FC channel of the BS2000/OSD server. An FC switch is not part of the HNC. The FC connection to the S server can be simultaneously used for the HNC-IV and HNC-V as well as for other devices (e.g. disks). An exclusive FC connection is not required. With a direct connection, the connection in the BS2000 must be configured with the WWPN No other controller should be defined. If you use the BS2000 commands add-io-unit or modify-io-unit, the BS2000-REP is required for the PM A in OSD-V7. Only if specially released, the HNC-IV can also be connected to a type S I/O channel or via a type S connection director (ESCON director). If it is operated via a type S connection director or switching devices, the requisite connecting length reductions (connection equivalent) must be observed. Cable types and order numbers for the types S and FC channel connections can be found in the configurators of the respective BS2000/OSD systems. The relevant current cable types and combination options are described under "Required lines". The connecting cable and LWL plugs are not part of HNC. The connection cables to 10/100/1000 Base-Tx Ethernet must be selected as required by the customer installation. Only connection cards with RJ 45- connectors are available. There is just one LC connector 62.5/125 µm and 50/125 µm multimode fibers for connecting to 1000 Base-Sx Gigabit Ethernet via fiber optics. Page 3

6 3.3 Product use Administration Both HNC models offer a graphical interface for simple administration tasks (such as restarting connections and upgrading with security fixes) or for information on the current configuration (for consistency with BCAM). The customer can use this via the console on the SKP on the x or via a PC with browser, connected to the administration LAN. The HNC itself can only be configured by the service technician via the service LAN. An Internet browser and a Java runtime environment are required on the PC for remote access. The browser must be configured in such a way that execution of applets and Java scripts are allowed and Java is activated. Either the Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox may be used as the browser. If required, the runtime environment can be downloaded from At least Java V6 (Update 17) is required. Teleservice The Teleservice SW is installed in the system and a configuration is not performed. The respective measures are performed by the service technician when setting up Teleservice. The service LAN connection to an SKP as of x is required for Teleservice calls. The console of the HNC is available via the RMC. The Admin LAN connection can also be used to log on. Support for VM systems HNC-IV supports VM operation with a maximum of 128 virtual network connections per FC connection and a maximum of 128 virtual network connections on the type S channel. The data can be transferred internally in the HNC between the various BS2000/OSD systems without loading the network. SNMP Both HNC models include an SNMP agent that also supports traps. These can be received and processed by an SNMP management platform (e.g. Unicenter TNG). The MIBs in ASN.1-code are available to connect the HNC to the management platform applications. The SNMP agent supports RFC 1213 (MIB-II) and also the so-called standard objects. Updating the HNC software An update procedure is integrated in the HNC V2.0A software, which enables the integration of service packages (correction packs and small function extensions), hot-fixes (single corrections) and security fixes during ongoing operation. If necessary, the HNC is then restarted or loaded. Page 4

7 3.4 Obsolete (and discontinued) functions The host-side connection via the type S channel (ESCON) is no longer supported in HNC-V In a redundant configuration mixed operation is not possible between the portbased VLAN solution of HNC-IIIR and the new VLAN solution (BCAM V19.0) as of HNC-IV. Both the net-side connection to FDDI and the net-side dual-link technology are no longer supported. 3.5 Incompatibilities None 3.6 Restrictions None 3.7 Procedure in the event of errors Diagnostics connection for Teleservice The HNC with V2.0A software can be supported by Teleservice via a LAN connection to the SKP (service console processor) of the BS2000 server. On the one hand you must ensured that the HNC is connected to the SKP via the supplied LAN cable (cable length: 15 m), and that on the other hand the SKP has Teleservice access. Access to the irmc is also possible via this service LAN. The setup, configuration and maintenance are only performed by the service technician. For this purpose, the technician establishes a terminal connection and uses the command interface (CLI) intended for this purpose. Either the SKP console or a PC with web browser can be used for administration. The SKP or PC is to be connected via the admin LAN. The admin LAN and service LAN are not released for productive customer operation. Important events and critical system statuses are saved in log files. Subcomponent failures are reported to a management station by the supplied SNMP agents. The ambient temperature, processor and the front fans are monitored. Measures to maintain or restore error-free operation can thus be triggered immediately. Page 5

8 4 Hardware requirements The software version HNC V2.0A is used on the following hardware models: 4.1 HNC-IV (based on TX300 S3) The HNC-IV offers an even higher performance network connection for BS2000 / OSD systems. It is modular in structure and based on a high performance PRIMERGY system with Linux. The product is available both as a floor-stand version and for rack installation. Support is provided for the following: host-side FiberChannel channels, type S channels only on special release, and network-side Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connections. The HNC is connected to S servers either via an FC switch or directly to the FC channel of the S server. The high throughput performance of the Gigabit LAN on the channel side is adequately supported with the FC channel type. If you use opennet Server V3.2 and depending on the operating method and block size, data throughput is up to 4 times higher than that of the HNC-IIIR Prerequisite for the HNC is the software product opennet Server in the BS2000/OSD. 4.2 HNC-V (based on the TX300 S6) The HNC-IV offers an even higher performance network connection for BS2000 / OSD systems. It is modular in structure and based on a high performance PRIMERGY system with Linux. The product is available both as a floor-stand version and for rack installation. Support is provided for the following: host-side FiberChannel channels, and network-side Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connections. The connection to the BS2000/OSD server of the S series can be either direct of via an FC switch. The high throughput performance of the Gigabit LAN on the channel side is adequately supported with the FC channel type. If you use opennet Server V3.2 and depending on the operating method and block size, data throughput is up to 2 times higher than that of the HNC-IV The basic configuration of the HNC-V already includes a (hardware) mirrored boot disk.
